Ch 434, Ch437

Haibara slowly finding reasons to be hopeful after the event of the bus hijacking. She found her late mum's recordings and knew that her sister didn't simply abandon her.

She had friends, she had Shinichi who's always telling her to face forward and not be scared, and even Ran who she finds difficult to understand I reckon, wanted to voluntarily help her, risking her own life at it.

Making Shinichi kill someone is such an interesting concept. The boy who believes killing is abhorrent, who will go out of his way to save lives many wouldn't or have seen as too far gone, having to make the choice to kill because if he didn't it would mean someone else would die and exploring how he lives with it.

Even if it's Gin he has to kill to protect Ai, Shinichi would struggle so much with the choice he made and blame himself for putting them in a situation where that was the only choice he could make to rescue her.

God and if it was to protect Ai, that would be a horrible situation for her too because she is one of the few characters who know Shinichi the best and knows that what he did would be something he would struggle to handle and yet she would think "because of her I put him in such a bad situation again" and the duo with suffer with their own guilt over it.

Making Shinichi kill isn't something you should do lightly but BOY is it a fun scenario to explore.

So DCMK has a lot in it that isn't super realistic. But I've always thought one of the dumber ones is that Haibara knows that the organization knows what she looks like as a child and she even acknowledges that that makes her dangerous to have around. And yet, despite all her usually high sense of caution she just keeps her hair exactly the same as she'd had it since she was a child. Like... even Andre Camel had to change his hair to avoid recognition.

But no. Haibara is keeping her haircut the same way she's had it the last 12 years.

Here's a bit of doodling to illustrate

Like... good on her that he has a hairstyle she likes and sticks with it. But if I were in a situation where being recognized means death I'd probably cut and dye my hair or start wearing a wig

Thinking of ways Gosho could incorperate Ran more into the plot as she deserves and I'm pretty attached to the idea of her becoming Ai's self-proclaimed bodyguard.

Hear me out! I think it would be interesting for both of the characters, especially Ai. Ran has already reminded her of Akemi before, it's one of the reasons she was originally scared to approach Ran originally as she didn't want to lose her sister again. And we also know that Akemi died because she wanted to protect Ai by freeing her from the org.

Having another girl, one who cares too much for Ai when she should not (in Ai's eyes), who has already almost died trying to protect her, be determined to keep Ai safe, a girl who is so much like her sister that is dead it hurts, trying to throw her life away for Ai (again, in Ai's eyes) would make her have so many complicated feelings. She'd try to push Ran away, but Ran is determined to give Ai the protection and love she deserves.

Meanwhile for Ran, imagine if she heard Akemi's last words alongside Shinichi, so she knows that they watched Ai's sister die right in front of them. When she meets Ai and learns her identity, she immediately feels the guilt from not being able to save Akemi, but she also feels a strong urge to keep her safe, to fulfil Akemi's last wish. If Ai does not feel safe, Ran will make sure she is.

And as time goes on, Ai sees less of Akemi in Ran and begins to see Ran. The brave young girl who has thrown herself into a fight she does not need too, one she could have remained ignorant of. Ran who uplifts Ai and everyone around her, while also making sure they're safe and sound even at the cost of her own safety. And so Ai decideds she will stop running from Ran and walk beside her, to protect her in return.

Shinichi surprising Ai with a cat.

Ai has been looking after a stray cat for a while now but didn't believe herself worthy of being a pet owner so she never tried to bring it with her back home.

When they disappeared, she assume they had either been found by their owner or the worst had happened.

She was upset for the next week because of it, which wasn't helped by Shinichi being secretive with her once again and dragging Agasa around without her.

Her bad mood reaches a boiling point when Shinichi and Agasa return from one of their secretive trips with something wrapped in a blanket and tells them how she's tired of them not speaking with her and trusting her and demands to know what they've been doing.

But before they can reply, the thing bundled in Shinichi's arm does so for him by letting out a loud meow.

Shinichi unravels the blanket to reveal the stray that Ai had been tending too for a while now and admits that he was the one who took the cat to try and find the owner and when they couldn't, he and Agasa had the cat checked out by the vet to have it's vaccinations and chipped.

To Ai.

"We know how much you care about the cat and with winter around the corner we couldn't just leave it outside," Shinichi says as he tried to hide his embarrassment about being caught out, "So we thought you could look after it."

And then the cat jumps out of Shinichi's arms and into Ai's. It takes her a moment to realise she's crying.

She wants to protest that she wouldn't be a good owner but the cat is nuzzling into her arms and the thought of turning them away just makes her feel bad. So instead she buries her face into the fur of her new cat to hide her tears and smile.
