hello! ive been looking into an autism diagnosis recently and was curious if autistic people could have tics? ive heard of anxiety tics and tourettes being comorbid but ive never really gotten a clear answer if tics can be bc of autism ^^'

Tic disorders do tend to be comorbid with autism, but everything I've seen online says that if you're autistic and have tics, the tics would not be considered because of your autism. It would be considered a tic disorder that is comorbid. At least, that's what I was able to find online. I hope this helps!

Since I have both Tourette's and autism, I decided to make this venn diagram to explain the differences and similarities between tics and stims. This is based on my experiences and my understanding of other people's experiences. I may be wrong in some parts, but I'm pretty sure this general idea is correct. I find this much more helpful than the yawn/sneeze metaphor, personally.

A list of some of my favorite vocal tics that I've had:

  • "No, no, no, no, no, no, no, silly. To DRY it. But, it ~exploded~ and they were both found dead, she must have been out of her head!" - Possibly in Michigan. The longest tic I've ever had.
  • "Hey champ, that's really interesting. Next time keep it to yourself." - tiktok. 10/10 tic.
  • "Yo yo yo, please never say those words again." - tiktok again. Lots of tics from there.
  • "Did you know that if you stop talking, we don't have to hear your annoying ass?" - last tiktok one I promise.
  • "What's the matter, Graverobber? Can't get it up if she's breathing?" - Repo! The Genetic Opera. Pretty inappropriate and kinda gross, but I love that movie.
  • "~She's on a lot of medication~" - 36 Questions musical. It's funny because I am in fact on a lot of medication.
  • "🎶 I'm asking nicely, give me what I want. I'll ask politely, give me what I want 🎶" - Animal by Sir Chloe. I love that song.
  • "Honey~ I love you!" - MysticMessenger. Got it from my favorite character, too.

I'll add on if I pick up any more good ones.

One positive of living with tourettes is that it has taught me tremendous patience.

All this time of waiting for my tics to let me grab my drink, waiting for a tic attack to end, waiting until my tics calm down enough to do x activity, etc.

Developing the patience to deal with all those things has allowed me to use that patience in other areas of my life as well.

This is an awful disorder to live with at times but I find it helpful to appreciate positives like this.
