The Ballad of Prince Sarris, Youngest Prince of Hyrlan - (Isle of the Sun Poem)

Words: 344

Warnings: None

AN: This is a ballad sung by the bards in the Kingdom of Hyrlan. Much of the religion of Hyrlan is based on ancestor worship, and Prince Sarris is one of the most legendary members of the royal line. This ballad covers when Prince Sarris stopped the rampage of the dragon Níðhöggr and bound it to his will using a lost spell he wrote down in his spellbook, the Lafabrea

Oh listen travelers to my tale, of pain and toil and strife-

In a time long past when Hyrlan was threatened by dragon-kind!

When the youngest prince they say did bet, his pride and his life

To control the dragon Níðhöggr and complete the arcane bind.

It started when the dragon first came, bringing fire and ice and fear.

It came down from the northern-most town, catching people unaware!

The first to go was the young mayor's son, bringing forth a fount of tears,

But soon more poor souls joined the son beyond in the elsewhere.

The army was soon in disarray, with no place left to turn.

Their magicks and shields could do little to hold back the draconic scourge!

The King was at a lost, as the land continued to burn,

And with each failed idea, loss became the war's painful dirge.

But in his labs in the palace did Prince Sarris toil away,

Beneath a stack of books as high as the Olde-Trees in Hydel-Ey!

With a quill in hand and fervor that would make the most passionate sway,

He set about making a spell to make the mighty dragon his prey.

As the dragon's rage burned ever bright, it reached a single idea,

That it should destroy the place that gave its enemies hope in their fear!

And as the Prince's quill penned the final word of the Lafabrea

Níðhöggr came to burn away the capital we hold so dear.

Rushing from his lab onto the roof as he heard the dragon's roar,

Prince Sarris bravely began to chant as he lifted his tome heavenward!

Lights flashed in the sky as the magic began to bind that which did soar,

And the mighty cries of the beast echoed as it fell downward.

So pray listen travelers now, to this song I sing,

Of how the Kingdom of Hyrlan was saved not by a mighty King!

Think on the virtues of wisdom and cunning, and the lesson that may bring,

For one needs not be the toughest warrior to save e'rything!
