Wedding dresses are a fabulous subject, and full of surprises. You may know (or not) that wedding white is a fairly new invention, dating from the Victorian Era. And even when white gowns became the popular choice for brides, it was far from uniform like it is today.
This red satin damask wedding gown dates from the 1880s and would make quite a statement going down the aisle today! I love the playful lines and gold against deep crimson. It has an almost medieval look to it (which was super common in this period) yet has all the hallmarks of peak 1880s fashion: the snatched waist, the conservative cut, and the draping.
I would 100% wear this!
From the Maryland Center for History and Culture description: Deep red silk satin wedding dress with damask panels along collar, bodice, front, shoulders, cuffs, and in skirt. Glazed cotton lines both pieces. Bodice has button closure and skirt has built-in bustle and rouching across front.
