Sooooo many thoughts on this character. One could spend hours picking apart details and cannons. So here is one of mine.
He is not a "Pretty Idiot"
I don't think Astarion is "unintelligent" at all. Some people argue that certain lines within the game suggest it, such as the mind flayer at the epilogue party saying he has a less wrinkled brain, or his epic plan to kill Cazador.
First, there is nothing that says mind flayers can see your brain through your skull. So the less wrinkled comment is an assumption based off of what the companion knows about him through interaction. And as far as the epic plan goes, there is a reason there is no detail to it. He doesn't trust his own ideas.
Walk with me.
Imagine you have spent two hundred years being told everything about you is worthless. Imagine being asked questions just be torn apart for not answering "correctly". Imagine spending so much time in fight or flight your brain defaults to Neverland just to escape your reality. Imagine having to mask specific aspects of your personality to appease others.
These are all real side effects to mental and physical abuse. And it is game fact that Astarion was seriously abused on unimaginable levels. I'm sure Cazaloser enjoyed taking every scrap of self worth Astarion had and I'm sure he beat the hell out of him with it. And if there is anything a narcissist loves to do, its make sure their victims believe they are stupid and worthless.
I think he is intelligent. He just doesn't trust himself to make the "right" decisions anymore. Not early on anyway. His disassociation probably causes him to "black out" and miss key info about situations most of the time anyway. Also, he probably has a deep fear of being blamed if something goes wrong. So he makes his opinions vague and your idea so he always has a foot out the door if he is challenged. Smart tactic. Manipulative AF, but ..smart.
I also think this because certain things change after you complete his quest and kill the * insert colorful and appropriate adjective here*.
Not a pretty idiot. Just pretty complicated.

While the Onion buying InfoWars is indeed extremely funny, very few of the posts I've seen commenting on the sale have mentioned that the families of the Sandy Hook victims apparently agreed to voluntarily reduce their lawsuit payout as part of a deal to ensure that the Onion would acquire InfoWars wholesale, rather than having the company broken up and auctioned off piecemeal, as the latter course could potentially have allowed some of those pieces to end up back in the hands of Alex Jones' cronies.
Like, yes, it is in fact very funny that InfoWars is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Clickhole, but the real props go out to the Sandy Hook families who saw the opportunity and willingly gave up the additional millions of dollars that could have been realised by stripping InfoWars for parts in order to make that happen.
Also worth noting that The Onion is partnering with EveryTown for Gun Safety on the launch of this.
This just proves they're not in it for the money, they're in it for justice. And justice sometimes works like this.

What WOULD be their take on somnophilia be? Less, I think, in the sense of wanting to get it on with a sleeping partner who remains asleep throughout, and more in the sense of waking one’s partner up by lovingly making out with his taint.

DU drow is a big cuddler. And feel-er. And toucher. He's also prone to, erm, nightly urges of the more trivial kind post-campaign. Obviously he addresses those himself rather than bothering Astarion with it.
I don't think DU drow would feel right about waking up Astarion with anything so overtly sexual. Kissing, holding, a good ol' morning nuzzle, that's standard for him but the clothes must be on.
If Astarion is in a particularly compromising position, then well - that becomes a wistful game in of itself of look-but-don't-touch. DU drow very much loves the sight of him sleeping peacefully, and still, and cold, but he's perfectly happy denying himself in exchange of a nice view and the joy of working yourself up until you have steam coming out your ears.
On the other hand, Astarion is very much aware that the drow will let him do whatever he wants to him, whenever he wants. DU drow's entire week is made if his partner can't even contain himself from initiating sex before he's even woken up - Astarion knows that it will make him happy, and sometimes that's reason enough.
That was a lot of words just to say that yes, the vamp very lovingly and slowly gives into the siren call all too often LOL
being a writer leads to a genuinely helpful but also very stupid kind of mindfulness where you'll be having a sobbing breakdown or the worst anxiety attack of your life and think "okay, I really need to pay attention to how this feels. so I can incorporate it into my fanfiction."
