Fun fact about me:

It had never occurred to me that there was a word for what I was (atheist) until I was working at a public Catholic school and looked up religion jokes on YouTube.

George Carlin videos led me to an Atheist Experience video and I started watching the show clips and that's when I realized there was a whole community of people like me.

So when people tell me to shut up and ask why I blog about religion if I don't believe, that's why. (Or part of why). Because there are people like me who don't know they're not alone in their beliefs (or lack thereof) and maybe my posts could help them feel a little less lonely.

I also do it in the hopes of

  • inspiring people (atheists and theists alike) to think about their beliefs critically and to learn about different religious beliefs and religions
  • normalizing atheism and atheists
  • serving as a resource for people who want to learn more about atheism and who may not (knowingly) have an atheist in their lives who they can talk to

Plus, I find religion interesting and I enjoy studying and discussing it.

Deep aphantasia: What it's like to have no visual imagination or inner voice

I think I have a mild version of this (or something closely related)!

I literally cannot "picture something in [my] mind". Like, I have no idea how to do that. I do have an inner voice though.

Me: So I was watching this video on YouTube where this Christian was like "Do you know why rainbows exist?" and I was like "Light reflecting off water particles!" and they went into a speech about God promising not to drown everyone ever again and I was like "Oh."

My Mom: Is that even a thing in the Bible?

Me: It is. After committing global genocide God supposedly promised to never drown the world again and made a rainbow for the first time.

My Mom: Ah, so like "No more water, I promise! *turns to someone beside him, in a quiet tone* So, how are we doing on the fire front instead?"

Things I like about being raised secular

  • My mom always made it explicitly clear that she'd love me and support me regardless of whether my beliefs aligned with hers
  • When my mom introduced me to the concept of deities and religions at age 5 she didn't push or force me to learn about the subject; if I had no interest in learning more she would have dropped it.
  • When my mom introduced me to the concept of deities and religion she made zero claims about their veracity or lack thereof. I was left to decide my beliefs on my own.
  • Because I was interested in learning more she went out of her way to expose me to as many different religions as reasonably possible
  • Being able to have fun with religious stuff (e.g. we had a contest for godparents for my dog and "baptized" her with a bit of diet coke on her forehead, I was allowed to play with the nativity scene*, etc)
  • Not having trauma from being afraid of being tortured forever in a bad afterlife or fearing loved ones would be tortured

* Nativity scenes in Latino culture are the equivalent of wreaths in white cultures -- technically religious symbols but everyone puts them up regardless of whether they're from that religion.

i think a lot of snarky posts that deride others for ‘not having interests outside fandom’ get pushback not because people in fandom are like, obsessive freaks that refuse to go outside or have other interests, but rather because the posts themselves are kind of presumptuous a lot of the time? that’s not to say no one out there only likes, idk, shipping marvel characters and has no other hobbies, but rather that, like… this is tumblr. it’s a blogging platform for people to post about those interests that they can build a community around. most of the time, people have jobs and hobbies and other interests, they just aren’t constantly posting about them because people’s presence on tumblr isn’t their entire life. so ‘most of you have no personality outside consuming media’ just comes off as hostile, self-important, and presumptuous, even if there are some people for whom it’s true

It’s not just with fandoms either.

Every so often I get some theist (usually Christian, but not always) telling me to stop blogging about topics relating to religion and atheism and “go outside for a change” and I have to explain to them what a themed blog (in Tumblr or otherwise) is and how they work, as well as the fact that queued posts are a thing that exist.

Nothing says “I don’t understand the concept of what a themed blog is” quite like telling someone who runs a blatantly themed blog “Stop blogging about the same subject all the time!”.

I need a complete list of your traumas, plus a genealogy going back at last five generations indicating the racial origins of all of your ancestors, plus essays on your personal relationships to religion, ethnicity, gender and sexuality before I can determine whether you're allowed to create this art. Until the paperwork is submitted, I'm just going to put you down as "Provisionally Problematic and Probably Appropriative". Please enjoy your complementary harassment while waiting for a judgement.

Processing times are currently about five years. Please Remain Patient.

"Ooh, I'm sorry; your ancestors' racial origins need to be listed in modern American terminology. Please resubmit. Until then, I'm downgrading your status to 'Tried to Make Excuses Rather Than Just APOLOGIZE'"

I'm sorry, that apology has been judged Insincere. What do you mean "why"? You didn't even address the substance of your wrongdoing. "What wrongdoing"? Sir, I cannot help you if you're going to play such games. Please go to the end of the line. NEXT!

Ah, I see that you've completed your trauma essays. Capital. Please report to those stocks over there while the Bailiff reads them out to the mob with customary scorn and ridicule. NEXT!

Right; so our review shows that you actually are a member of the marginalised community to which this art pertains. I therefore sentence you to hear people say: "You don't speak for ALL members of this community!" for the rest of your natural life.

It really is quite simple, I don't know why you're making this so complicated. Just confess your sins, promise to do better and ask for absolution--No, it has absolutely nothing to do with Catholicism, what are you talking about? And actually, a great many of the people here have Catholics amongst their oppressor classes, so it's pretty problematic for you to draw that parallel--Well! There's simply no call for that kind of language! Back of the fucking line! NEXT!

I literally had someone once tell me not to "compare the religions of Indigenous cultures to Christianity jfc" because I said that the traditional Cherokee, Blackfoot, and Cree religions are monotheistic like Christianity, islam, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism (among others).

Plot twist: I'm Indigenous.

I also had someone a few years ago on another blog freak tf out because I commented on this picture

saying

Plus even if it weren’t an awful idea due to the cactus to the face issue, this would only work in places with no winter. Either that or you’d have to keep your car idling constantly so the cactuses don’t die when it’s -40.

And some rando got all huffy about me saying that some places have no winter:

uh…. winter =/= - 40. brazil has winters and the lowest it goes is a bit bellow zero and only in very specific places. MANY places have winters that don’t go near 0 degrees. i mean yea cactus to the face is still a shitty idea but your comment is kinda close minded.

Plot twist: I'm a Brazilian-Canadian immigrant and saying that some countries have "no winter" or "fake winter" is a colloquial way that Canadian immigrants from hot places jokingly refer to places that don't get snowfall and/or weather below zero.

I've also been angrily told by someone to take down the icon for my blog about Brazil because the icon features half the flag of Brazil and half the flag of Canada and if I'm going to "claim" to be Brazilian I should at least commit to the lie.

Plot twist: As I've said, I'm Brazilian-Canadian.

I often get accused of being a liar and a fake because in some posts I talk about being Brazilian and in others I say I'm Canadian. I've even made a meme for when that happens since it happens so often:

People on this site seem to be unaware that dual citizens are a real thing that exists.

A while back I had a substitute come into the school library I work at during the time I have student volunteers to ask if I had some space she could use for prayer time.

I said yes and corralled my volunteers into the fiction area of the library, telling the sub that she could close the door to the nonfiction section to have more privacy if she liked, which she did.

My little volunteers were super curious about what was happening, so I explained to them that Muslims need to pray at certain times of the day and it was time for the sub to pray.

“Ooooh!” they said, nodding in understanding.

“I only pray at bedtime, but I’m Christian, not Muslim,” one kid piped up.

“I pray at bedtime and before meals (though not at school, ‘cause that would be awkward),” another added.

One of them then asked me in that "genuinely curious" tone kids have if I believed in God too.

I took a chance and told them the truth -- that I don't but that I'm not claiming to know that there definitely isn't one either.

"Oh, I KNOW he's real!" one volunteer chirped happily before going back to putting books away.

One of my coworkers is atheist too!

I bought a small box set of Hanukkah books to add to the collection to try to even remotely even out the oversaturation of Christmas at the school I work at, and when I was reading one of the books to the Grade 2s one of them mentioned that "Mr. Wizard* celebrates Hanukkah!". So I went to ask him about the pronunciation of the word Bubbe to make sure I was saying it right.

We got to talking, and he mentioned that he's culturally Jewish but not religiously Jewish because he's an atheist, but his family still goes to the synagogue for celebrations mostly 'cause "who doesn't like a party?".

Apparently, there are several of us at the school, we're just not open about it because of fear of discrimination.

Out of the books I bought, I'd highly recommend 2:

Little Red Ruthie: A Hanukkah Tale by Gloria Koster and Hanukkah Bear by Eric Kimmel. The first is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood where she's taking sour cream and jam to make latkes with grandma and she tricks the wolf to overeat latkes and be too full to eat her and granny; the second is a fun story of a granny who's mostly blind and deaf and mistakes a bear for the rabbi who was coming for a visit.

* That's not his real name but the kids call him that because he's got a bigger beard and they think it makes him look like a wizard. lol

man you guys have got to stop getting mad at people for tagging your post as whatever annoying thing. tags used to be sacred. you weren't supposed to see it. it's the culture. "Stop tagging this as [character]". No!! You have no right to make demands on me!! I can do whatever I want in the tags. Just cause Tumblr decided to set up a camera in my house and broadcast it live doesn't mean you get to make fun of me for going "wheee!!!" when I get into bed it's my fucking house and my fucking business!!!!!

^^ Note to people who bitch about me tagging their religion on a post about their religion.

Or bitch about me using "too many tags" as a weird attempt at subtly complaining about the fact I tag their religion.

My blog can use whatever tags I damn well please. You don't have the right to police my blog tags, especially when the tag is pertinent to the content in the blog post.

Like, the whole point of tagging is supposed to be

a) So you/your audience can more easily search your blog for related content

and

b) So you/your audience can more easily search for posts on related content in the website

c) to widen the potential viewership of yiur post to beyond your followers

If my post deals with your religion in some way it is entirely logical and within reason to tag the topics related to the post.

Random Fact #3,550

The game Chutes and Ladders had its origins as an Indian board game about Karma called Nagapasa.

One of my Grade 3s knew this! I read their class a book about Diwali (The Best Diwali Ever) since they started their India unit and afterwards the kids were listing off things that Indians invented & one of them said Snakes and Ladders! :)

The thought of an afterlife, even a pleasant one, isn't universally comforting.

People often think that the thought of an afterlife is universally comforting to everyone, but that's so far from the truth.

Even if we're just talking about pleasant afterlives.

When our dog died, my mom told me that what was distressing her most of all (other than the obvious) was the possibility, however small, that there's an afterlife.

Because if there is an afterlife, our dog would be all by herself, not understanding what was happening and wondering why we abandoned her.

I sat in silence for a moment and eventually said "In Supernatural, Heaven looks different for each person, to suit what they would consider to be pleasant and perfect. Time also doesn't work like it does here; so in Lady's Heaven she wouldn't have time to miss us or worry about where we were because we'd already be there with her. Since there's no evidence for any afterlife, there's just as much chance that it works like in Supernatural as any other way."

My mom took a moment to ponder this and eventually nodded, "That's true. I like that, thanks."

When people start saying that Near Death Experiences should be taken seriously as proof of their deity existing and I point out that I've had an NDE and it doesn't match what they described:

"But that doesn't count!"

=-=-=-=

Here's my NDE experience, in case anyone's curious:

I had a very rare kind of seizure three times as a toddler that involved my heart stopping and my mom having to jump in front of the nearest car to rush me to the hospital to get resuscitated.

I don't remember all the instances (I was super little, after all), but I do remember the one I had at 3 years old while in the shower:

I was playing with my toys one moment, and waking up in a strange bed the next with something over my face that made my mouth taste funny (a medicine-infused oxygen mask).

I very distinctly remember me trying to get the mask off and my mom gently telling me that it had to stay on and me complaining that it tasted bad.

No Hell, no Heaven. Just unconsciousness and then waking up.

(It's not exactly epilepsy, and I haven't had seizures since then because after the third they prescribed me daily doses of anti-seizure medication until I was 8, but I still need to avoid strobe lights or they could set me off).

Just want to say I really like your blog! You're the most intresting athiest blog I've found on here. Beats trudging through the oftentimes toxic atheist spaces on reddit.

Thank you so much that was really lovely to hear! I've had a bad couple of days recently and this really cheered me up. :)
