How to tell someone you know nothing about evolution without saying you know nothing about evolution (?/?)

"None of the fossils we've found are transitional, they're just different species."

=-=-=-=

What... What do you think a transitional species would look like, my dude?

Like, legit, what are you expecting to see? Because based on this argument you don't understand what "transitional fossil" means.

But if you want to see, like, a fish who can walk on land or a bird with half a wing or something... you should look up Tiktaalik, mudskippers, and emus.

Tiktaalik is a fossil of an early tetrapod (vertebrates with a body plan of one head with two front limbs and two back limbs -- like humans, iguanas, owls, and frogs). It used its limbs to flop awkwardly out of the water to escape predators.

Mudskippers are modern fish who occupy a similar habitat niche. They live 90% of their lives outside of water and climb trees to get away from the tide (and the predators that come with it).

Emu wings are partway-shaped between a wing and an arm.

Elephants also bury their dead with leaves if memory serves.

The evolving attitudes of Gen X toward evolution

Middle school and high school students displayed a good deal of uncertainty about evolution, with a third having no attitude about evolution and 44% saying that the statement "human beings as we know them developed from earlier species of animals" was probably true or probably false, reflecting a degree of uncertainty about the issue. During the 15 years after high school, 28% of these Generation X young adults concluded that evolution was definitely true, and 27% thought that evolution was definitely false, according to co-author Mark Ackerman, a professor at Michigan Engineering, the U-M School of Information and Michigan Medicine. "These results demonstrate the impact of postsecondary education, initial career experiences, and the polarization of the political system in the United States," Ackerman said.

"The experience of college-level science courses, the completion of baccalaureate or more advanced degrees, and the development of civic scientific literacy were strong predictors of increased acceptance of evolution."

"Humans are perfectly designed!"

There's a gap between the ovaries and the fallopian tubes, which often leads to fertilized eggs implanting outside the uterus (because it missed the fallopian tube entrance).

An embryo implanting outside the uterus means that the embryo is guaranteed to not survive and that the pregnant individual is also 100% absolutely guaranteed to die if the embryo is not removed/aborted.

Most fertilized eggs don't successfully implant in the womb and are washed away with period blood without the pregnant person being any wiser about it.

Our spine's structure is perfect for walking on all fours, not on two legs, which means that, as we age, our backs are guaranteed to have health issues.

This would not happen if we walked on all fours.

As we age, our eyes' lenses lose their structural integrity and bend out of shape, causing people to need glasses in order to be able to see properly.

About 75% of adults need to use some kind of vision correction.

And some of us, like myself, have needed glasses since toddlerhood otherwise we'd be legally blind because our lenses were misshapen from birth.

We eat/drink and breathe out of the same body part, making choking and aspirating food and drink very common and likely.

Hundreds of thousands of people die by choking on something every year. In 2020 in Canada it was 3,000, in Japan it's about 4,000 yearly, in the US it tends to vary between 4,000 and 5,000 people, with an average of 140 being children.

Our DNA is full of broken genes & old viruses. Photosynthesis creates toxic waste products. Our eyes are inside-out, even though those of mollusks are not. Optical illusions & thinking biases.

Research is finding that a lot of those "broken" genes aren't so much broken as they are switched off. A great example of this is the gene for making vitamin C -- we all have it, but it's shut off and basically just sits there doing nothing, meaning we need to get vitamin C from somewhere, or else we get scurvy.

Transitional Fossil Time!

Osteolepis

Date range: 416–359 Ma

Transitional form of: Fish to tetrapods (four-limbed animals with a backbone).

Location: Scotland

Why it’s a transitional fossil:

Though it still was very much a fish, Osteolepis is a prime example of the extremely early stages of fish becoming land-dwellers.

Unlike other fish before it, these 20 cm lobed fish featured two key adaptations necessary for transitioning from sea to land: internal nostrils and pectoral fins stiffened by bony bits, which would provide them more strength when pushing themselves on shore.

While we can’t be sure this specific genus is our direct ancestor, it’s highly likely we are relatives on some level. Remember those bony bits I mentioned? They look like very early rough copies of the humerus and radius/ulna  bones found in all tetrapods (us included).

"There are no transitional fossils!"

Tiktaalik - A fish with developing legs. Also appearance of ribs and neck.

Odontochelys Semitestacea— Partial formation of a turtle shell, showing how the hard underbelly, or plastron, formed first.

Archeopteryx

It’s the quintessential transitional fossil, which we have known about for 159 years as of 2019.

Archeopteryx is a stage in bird evolution after avian dinosaurs like t-rex and velociraptor evolved downy feathers and after they had developed true feathers, but before avian dinosaurs developed true flight.

While velociraptor feathers were too fine and the wrong shape for helping it to fly (likely serving mostly as an extra source of warmth), Archeopteryx had proper flight feathers. However, its bones were still too dense for true flight, meaning it was more of a glider than an actual flier.

Its forelimbs were a bit of a midway point between what you’d call a wing and an arm, with an elongated thumb-claw combo rather similar to that found in the wings of bats, which it used as tiny grappling hooks to climb up trees before gliding to lower heights when hunting or escaping a predator, much like how flying squirrels do today.

Anchiornis is at the point in the transition where it’s hard to decide whether it falls in the bird or dinosaur side of the fence:

It has wings, but they’re symmetrical and rounded, probably not used for flight but instead are used to keep warm, for mating displays, and gliding. Its legs are more like that of other-bird-like dinos, but like birds and unlike bird-like dinos, Anchiornis had arms nearly the same length as the hind legs.

Its spine connects at the back of the skull instead of at the base like in birds, but it had flexible wrists, which is more a bird thing. It had a mostly bony tail, but also had primary and secondary contour feathers on both arms, legs, toes, and wrists.

It utterly baffles me how so many people seem to be unable to grasp the concept that atheists don't believe in any deities.

1. Assuming that by "Darwinism" you mean "evolution", what is morally bankrupt about it?

The Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection is literally just a description of what we can observe by studying nature. No more, no less. It's entirely amoral.

It makes no proclamations over what one should do, it simply describes what is.

2. Darwin isn't atheists' god or messiah, he's just some dude who noticed something neat that one time.

We don't treat The Origin of Species as gospel either. His work has long since become outdated as we've learned new facts about biology, such as DNA and chromosomes, and we no longer look to his work as being accurate (that is, the general gist of it was right, but the details were not).

He wasn't even the first one to notice evolution, he was only the first to compile everything together and make it accessible to the public. Heck, another guy was writing pretty much the same thing (entirely unknowingly) who just happened to publish second so Darwin gets the credit.

3. Not all atheists accept the Theory of Evolution. And not all Christians reject it.

In fact, most of the people who accept evolution are theists (Christians included), as there aren't enough atheists to make up the numbers of people who accept it.

youd think horses were one of those animals that has horrible health due to humans breeding unhealthy animals to achieve a certain look but no they really are just naturally that fucked up

horses’ lungs bleed when they run at a certain speed

if their diet is too rich / low in selenium their hooves fall off

excuse me

The reason they have such poor health outcomes after breaking or otherwise injuring their legs is because their legs are actually hyper-specialized fingers; and as in human fingers, there is very little muscle supporting the bone, just a lot of cartilage and tendons and whatnot. You’d think an animal that literally evolved to run away to avoid being eaten would have ALSO evolved sturdier running appendages, but…

I fucking hate this post, it’s 1 AM I don’t want to know that horse legs are giant fucking fingers

holy shit

the homologues of the (human) knee and elbow on a horse are at the level of the ribcage. the “knees” in the middle of the legs are homologous to wrists on the front and heels on the back. anything below that is hand/foot.

I understood most of that but the diagram for me is what makes me never want to look at a horse again

arabian horses have been bred so badly that they have breathing problems because of the shape of their face

This is how horses are built compared to a human

I wish Tumblr would stop telling me things about horses

Oh yay, something I can expand on as a lifetime equestrian.

A horse’s digestive system is absolutely awful. They’re forage animals and so they need to eat constantly to keep their digestive organs happy and functioning properly. If there are gaps in their intake, like say, when they are stabled and not receiving constant forage, their stomachs fill with acid and start to corrode their stomach lining, giving them ulcers. Not to mention their intestines don’t have food to constantly push through the system, so it can cause blockages and backups. Horses also don’t have the ability to throw up, so if something enters their stomach that isn’t digestible, it will likely block their system.

More horses die from stomach aches (colic) than anything - if they feel stomach pain, they often start to roll on the ground to try to ease the discomfort, but in doing so can actually twist their own organs and cut off bloodflow to them…

This is a really high overview, but it just goes to show you how messed up they are, and how humans domesticating them has really put a kink in their way of life…

We all make fun of the platypus as being the one created when evolution was drunk but the more I learn about horses the more I think we’re making fun of the wrong animal.

Horses are one of the best examples that evolution is true -- they're a complete and total mess like you'd expect if evolution were true.

No one in their right mind would intentionally design horses to be the way they are.

And this isn't even going into the ridiculous amount of blood types they have and how horse blood transfusion is basically alchemy.
