The thought of an afterlife, even a pleasant one, isn't universally comforting.

People often think that the thought of an afterlife is universally comforting to everyone, but that's so far from the truth.

Even if we're just talking about pleasant afterlives.

When our dog died, my mom told me that what was distressing her most of all (other than the obvious) was the possibility, however small, that there's an afterlife.

Because if there is an afterlife, our dog would be all by herself, not understanding what was happening and wondering why we abandoned her.

I sat in silence for a moment and eventually said "In Supernatural, Heaven looks different for each person, to suit what they would consider to be pleasant and perfect. Time also doesn't work like it does here; so in Lady's Heaven she wouldn't have time to miss us or worry about where we were because we'd already be there with her. Since there's no evidence for any afterlife, there's just as much chance that it works like in Supernatural as any other way."

My mom took a moment to ponder this and eventually nodded, "That's true. I like that, thanks."
