It always makes me laugh/irritates me when theists be like “Atheism is bad because Stalin//Mao was atheist. uwu”.

The fact that they might have been atheist and did something bad doesn’t mean they did it “in the name of atheism”.

Absolutely! This!! That’s one of the arguments that I hated hearing even when I was still a Christian.

Especially since, if we’re judging belief systems by the atrocities committed by the people who subscribe to it, Christianity has too much blood on its hands to throw stones. So even if someone did do something in the name of atheism, that wouldn’t reflect on any other atheists. Unless Christians would like to take responsibility for the many and varied genocides they’ve funded and led.

"You'd have to believe to a certain extent that God exists in order to argue his nonexistence." -- @n9neframes

Let's use that same argument with something else and see if it holds up:

You'd have to believe to a certain extent that the Ogopogo exists in order to argue his nonexistence.

You'd have to believe to a certain extent that dragons exist in order to argue their nonexistence.

You'd have to believe to a certain extent that Voldemort exists in order to argue his nonexistence.

You'd have to believe to a certain extent that something exists in order to argue its nonexistence.

Does that argument hold up?

"If you don't believe in God then why do you say 'Oh my God'?"

Religion doesn’t own language and it doesn’t own words.

Back in ye olde days people chose to insert religion into colloquial language. Now you have to live with the fact that non-religious people use religious language because the colloquial language contains religious terms.

When Muslims say “What did I do wrong in a past life?” are they confessing to believing in reincarnation? No.

Are Jewish people who say “Karma’s a bitch, huh?” admitting they’re actually Hindu or Buddhist? No.

Are Christians who use the term "soulmate" actually believers in the Greco-Roman gods since the concept comes from an Ancient Greek myth? No.

Are atheists who say “Oh my God!” admitting to believing in a god? No.

"It takes more faith to be an atheist than to believe in God."

=-=-=

1. Ah, so you admit that belief based on faith is unreliable because it can lead to both a correct belief and an incorrect belief?

2. Ah, so you think having faith is a bad thing, then?

Because if faith is good then what would be the problem in atheists having more of it than you?

3. It doesn't take faith to not believe a claim that hasn't been substantiated.

If y’all were wondering if Christians use the exact same apologetics across cultures/languages...

…The answer is yes.

Translation:

- When I tell my friend I’m an atheist and they become a believer outta nowhere

- Can you see the wind?

Literal translation:

- Behold me telling my friend that I’m an atheist and from nothing sprouts a believer

- [Do] you see the wind?

Apologetic Arguments Christians Need to Retire

The Watchmaker Analogy

The original is basically “If you found a watch at the beach you wouldn’t think it came about naturally”.

Other incarnations include “If you came across a cabin in the woods”, and “if you came across a hut on a deserted island”.

The Problem

The assumption is that we are able to recognize design based on complexity, but that assumption’s wrong. That’s not how you recognize design.

You recognize design by comparing the thing to nature and seeing if it can occur naturally. We have evidence of trees, caves, snowflakes, and dolphins occurring naturally.

We have no evidence of a watch, cabin, or hut existing without someone building them.
