Indigenous peoples continue to struggle to access complete and timely records about Indian Residential Schools, according to a new report by the Senate standing committee on Indigenous Peoples. The report, Missing Records, Missing Children, was released Thursday and includes 11 recommendations to improve access to residential school records, including for the Canadian government to compel Catholic entities to release documents to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. "It's extremely important for the support of the survivors and the family members to bring closure because everyone is aging on," said Sen. Brian Francis, who is Mi'kmaw from Lennox Island First Nation and is chair of the committee. "The sooner we can get answers the better."

To be clear, children taken to residential schools were split up and moved around with zero contact with each other or their families, and even now we're still unearthing new mass graves full of lost children.

Some kids ran away, or comitted suicide, were murdered, were hidden, or were given to white families- there are people right now who don't know what happened to their siblings, aunts, uncles, and friends.

They don't know if they're alive with a new name on the other side of the country, or at the bottom of a hole.

The idea that there are WRITTEN DOCUMENTS possibly containing this information and thet HAVENT BEEN SHARED YET is insane

Foods you wouldn’t guess had meat/pork in them and would not be suitable for vegetarians, vegans, Jews keeping kosher, or Muslims. I’ll add a list when I have time.

I want to point out something important here for anyone who uses kosher marks as a substitute for halal marks since the two dietary systems are similar and many halal foods aren't marked:

Look under the words "sea salt." PLANTERS HAS A FAKE KOSHER MARK ON THESE PEANUTS. This is a sadly common practice. If you see a "K" on the side of a product and it's not in a circle, that is not a real hescher mark. It's them saying "It's kosher, you can trust us! Really! We didn't pay for a rabbi or heschering board to actually check our product, but we know it's kosher!" As it turns out, these are neither halal nor kosher. There's gelatin in the ingredients list. Here's an image showing true hescher marks in the US:

And since I've only ever seen one halal mark I decided to look it up and see if that really is the only one. I'm actually finding MANY, but I can't figure out which ones are in use in America (there's no nice neat all-in-one diagram like the kosher one). That said, both of these logos are from the Islamic Services of America, and the top one is the one I've seen in use before:

There needs to be a push for more inclusive labeling involving halal marks, and an outlawing of fake kosher marks. PLEASE BE AWARE FOR YOUR FRIENDS BOTH JEWISH AND MUSLIM. Things are not being marked correctly due to predatory practices by corporations.

The one for halal I've always seen in Canada looks like this (or some slight variation thereof):

Christian Privilege (11/?)

In its long-form census, completed every 10 years, Statistics Canada asks Canadians what their religion is “even if no longer practicing.”

This has the effect of creating an inflated impression of religious adherence and practice in Canada.

Independent surveys typically find a greater percentage of Canadians do not identify with a religion.

E.g. According to Statistics Canada, 44% of British Columbians had “no religion” in 2011 but when asked whether they practice a religion or faith, 69% answered No to a 2016 survey by the BC Humanist Association and Insights West.

"Something can't come from nothing!"

Whoever said anything about humans? I'm talking about nature.

We have evidence of the building blocks of life being found in space. No humans necessary.

And just because humans haven't created life from scratch doesn't mean we definitely never will. Humans couldn't hear each other across the world and then one day we could. Same potentially goes for creating life from scratch.

Also, "This applies to everything except my god, which is special" is literally the definition of a special pleading logical fallacy.

Either something that applies to everything applies to everything or it doesn't.

You don't get to ignore your own claim when it becomes inconvenient without getting called out.

* yawns * listen, you're babbling on about whatever you're babbling about, I was responding to the context of that picture. I disagreed that it's impossible for God to create the universe out of nothing, hence the use of that verse. The fact that you're reblogging this with a screenshot of my comment + mentioning me, instead of just replying in a comment, shows that you're just looking for attention by doing it this way with the hopes of whatever it is you were hoping to achieve with this but continue as you will. I've said what I've wanted to, I've seen what you've said and now I bid you a blessed farewell.

Oh, @counter-culture-christian, I wasn't aware you didn't learn the basic Kindergarten skill of listening to other people. I'm so sorry you're behind basic life skills like that, that's so sad. :(

I'd reply to your response but until you learn to listen to what people say you're not worth anyone's time.

For anyone who DOES have the basic skills taught in preschool who's curious, the reason I screenshot instead of answering is because Tumblr posts my answer under my personal blog name instead of under this blog name.

And unlike Christians, my right to freedom from religion is not legally protected, so if my employer were to find out I'm an atheist I could be fired and blacklisted on the basis of religion.

“I don’t like the term cultural Christianity.”

Well, tough shit Sparklefarts. I don’t like how y’all throw antisemitic bitchfits, but it’s something that’s gonna keep happening because of cultural Christianity.

“But it’s mean to me because I was traumatized”

You think Jews haven’t been traumatized by Christians/Christianity, Sparklefarts? We’ve got generational AND personal trauma from it. The goydacity of your bullshit is why terms like “culturally Christian” exist.

And if the term “cultural Christianity” triggers you so much, mute and/or block it. Random strangers are not responsible for managing your experiences on the internet. Especially not when they’re random strangers from marginalized communities speaking about their experiences.

Editing to Add:

There are still fewer Jews today *globally* than there were in 1939. It’s a complete fiction that we’re a “major world religion.”

1. Your people aren't the only ones to have generational trauma due to a genocide perpetrated by Christians.

Your experience with genocide isn't the only one that matters.

Oooh, you've got generational AND personal trauma from Christians persecuting you? Oh, you poor dear. You're so special and unique, surely you win the Trauma Olympics gold medal!

The Christian genocide of Indigenous people in the Americas alone (which is STILL HAPPENING, btw) had killed 10% of the entire global population as of the mid-1600s (about 56 million people).

Indian Residential Schools in Canada didn't close until 1997, and schools were already built with a cemetery, as most schools had a 25-50% death rate of "students" -- who were told to answer to a number instead of their name.

In Brazil, Christians would walk around with necklaces featuring the severed ears of the Indigenous people they killed.

You think our population has bounced back to what it used to be? We're STILL facing genocide to this day.

So is what I say more worthy of respect and attention than what you have to say, since more of my people were killed by Christians and we also have generational and personal trauma?

2. If you're imposing Christianity on people it's entirely reasonable for them to get mad at you about it.

It's not reasonable to resort to antisemitic speech. But frankly, seeing as I've been called antisemitic for repeating things that atheist Jews have said, it leads me to question whether they're actually saying antisemitic things or if they're just saying things you don't like.

It's utterly disgusting to tell Indigenous people that they're culturally Christian because they live in a Christian-majority nation, especially when you don't hold Jews living in that same nation to the same standard.

The term "Cultural Christian" describes people who understand the world through a Christianized lens regardless of disbelief or even disdain for having been raised inside of that system.

Not everyone in a Christian-majority country falls under that description.

And not every Christian-majority country treats religion the same way.

Brazilian culture regarding religion is VERY different from Canadian which is VERY different from American which is VERY different from Indian and so on.

You've heard of mansplaining and gringosplaining, now get ready for...

...atheistsplaining, where theists (god-believers) "correct" atheists about what atheists believe and what their worldview is, and overall claim to know what the atheist believes better than the atheist does.

  • "Everyone believes in God, you're just suppressing it in your unrighteousness!"
  • "Atheists are atheists because they're racist and don't want to admit that Hinduism is true!"
  • "All Latinos are Culturally Christian without exception because you can't escape Catholicism in Latin America!"
  • "Atheists believe that the universe came from nothing!"
  • "Atheists have no reason to not rape and murder!"

@wizardhunterwizard It's legal in my country to fire government employees on the basis of religion if they are found to be atheists.

My country's anthem is a prayer to the Christian god.

My country's money makes references to the Christian god.

My country has two public school systems, one secular and one Catholic. They are both funded by the public.

I'm required to pray at work every day if I'm employed at a Catholic public school.

I can't travel to certain countries because being an atheist there is punishable by death.

"She went to step up to compete for the grade four shot-put final, and right before she went to throw, a grandfather of a student said, 'Hey, this is supposed to be a girls' event, and why are you letting boys compete.' My daughter is cisgender, born female, uses she/her pronouns. She has a pixie haircut," said mom Heidi Star. Star says the man then carried on to demand certification to prove that her daughter was born female. "He stopped the entire event. He also pointed at another girl who also had short hair. He then piped in and said, 'Well, if she is not a boy, then she is obviously trans.'" Star said the man's wife then started calling her "a genital mutilator, a groomer, and a pedophile."
Kari Starr, the girl's other mother, says Thursday's events have rocked their daughter's confidence. "This has destroyed our beautiful daughter's confidence, and she was inconsolably crying during this whole event and continued once it was over and we were leaving. Not to mention, she was unable to concentrate on her track and field finals and the shot-put throw for which she had qualified," Kari said. The parents posted a photo and identity of the man on local Facebook groups, but Castanet is not publishing that information because the man's identity has not been confirmed by the school district. ***

The headline though, "accused of being trans"? Accused of? They could have written "Girl, 9, victim of transphobic harassment at Kelowna track meet"??? Accused implies something wrong could have been done - in this case, being trans could be seen as A Bad Thing.

Also, it's notable that the guy attacked not just the girl who had a pixie cut, but the girl who has TWO moms. So, he was attacking the child of an openly non-straight couple.

But this only happens in the US, this isn't my Canada, some people claim.

It's been happening here. It's happening here. It will keep happening here until either our elected officials and LOL enforcement decide to fucking put their foot down and defend our constitutional rights to be protected from anti-trans harassment (I know the girl is cisgender, but she's a victim of transphobic hate), or until they let us fucking deal with those assholes ourselves. It's one or the other.

*** You know what? Here's the guy and his wife:

As someone who's cis and has been misgendered in the past, I knew straight away that this trend of policing what genitalia athletes have wouldn't just affect trans people (which in itself would be bad enough).

I was questioned about being in the women's locker room at the local public pool when I was about 12. I had short hair and had already changed into my jeans and t-shirt and someone demanded to know what "a boy" was doing in the women's changing room.

It's been 20 years and now I have boobs but I can't bring myself to cut my hair above my shoulders because of that interaction.

Good on the school for protecting the kid.

I've seen the cultural Xtianity discourse for so long so often I'm sick of seeing it. Because it's the same thing over and over. Jews being like "hey recognize that some atheists are still culturally christian and this still harms us" and atheists being like "WHAT DO YOU MEAN HOW DARE YOU CALL ME BY MY OPPRESSORS I HATE ALL RELIGIONS AND JUST FOR YOU SAYING THAT I HATE JEWS NOW"

Avatar

1. Jews on Tumblr are NOT just politely saying "Hey, recognize that some atheists are still culturally Christian and this still harms us."

In every single experience I've ever had on this site, Jews have been neither calm nor polite on any posts regarding the use of the term "culturally Christian". In every interaction where Jews talked about cultural Christianity, they brought up the term to dismiss any criticism of the Torah or question about Judaism that they don't approve of by claiming that the person's opinions and questions are invalid because the person is "culturally Christian".

2. The problem people have with the Jewish use of the term "culturally Christian" isn't that we're denying that some atheists are culturally Christian and that Christianity has a long history of antisemitism.

The problem is that y'all are, as mentioned in the first point, using it as a condescending dismissal of anything any atheist has to say (or ask) about the religion of Judaism that you even remotely don't approve of.

And people get irritated and disrespectful toward people who are treating them condescendingly.

Frankly, based on your post's hyperbolic and intentionally uncharitable depiction of atheists and past interactions where people accused me of being antisemitic for things like

it's hard to take your claim seriously even though I know that, like with any large group of people, atheists that are antisemitic exist.

3. Even if there are Jews using the term in the way you claim they are (which, statistically speaking, it's not only possible but likely that some are), the problem isn't that they're saying that some atheists are culturally Christian.

It's that the fact that some atheists are culturally Christian doesn't actually impact Jewish people in a significant way at all.

For starters, we're a minority in most countries. And we're not in power. There are 7 states in the US where we're not even legally allowed to run for office. In Canada, it's legal to fire someone from a government position if they're found to be atheist. Several countries in the world have the death penalty for atheism. Egypt declared atheists to be terrorists.

"Atheists are our oppressors" and "atheists are prone to siding with our oppressors" has no tangible basis in reality.

4. Y'all repeatedly say that Indigenous people have to be "culturally Christian" because they live in a Christian-majority country.

I would think that I wouldn't have to explain why that's an utterly disgusting thing to say to Indigenous people, but apparently I do or I wouldn't have Jewish people telling me that I have to be culturally Christian because they said so.

Indigenous people have been facing genocide (both cultural and physical) by Christians for over 500 years.

In Canada, kids were kidnapped from their parents by the government and forced to assimilate to Christianity. They were given numbers as names and forbidden from speaking their language. Kids were publically flogged if they tried to escape. Indian Residential Schools didn't close down in Canada until 1997.

In Brazil, Indigenous people were hunted by Christians and Christians wore the severed ears of Indigenous people as a way of showing off how many people they killed. Right now, the government is trying to pass a bill to cut down Indigenous rights to their lands.

Saying that Indigenous people have to be culturally Christian because some rando Jewish people said so is disgusting and racist af.

It's also wildly ironic that you're imposing Christianity on Indigenous people -- which is a very Christian thing to do.

5. Y'all use double-standards when talking about yourself vs other people.

When I ask if Jews who live in Christian-majority countries are culturally Christian by virtue of where they live I get called a moron, antisemitic, and get told to go kill myself.

So the same standard of "you are culturally part of the majority religion of where you live" isn't held when it comes to Jews.

6. You don't have the right to impose a culture on someone any more than you have the right to impose a gender on someone.

It's not up to you to decide what someone believes.
