I had my party get transported to the Feywild and the first being they encountered was a Satyr named Puck who introduced himself and held out his hand while saying "And your name please?"

So then everyone starts talking amongst themselves about how they would all say their names at once until the NPC guiding them jumped in to tell them not to do that because they would be literally giving away their names, which is bad, and then told Puck to stop trying to trick the mortals.

Basically what was supposed to be an intro to the fae almost resulted in disaster.

Last night Ireena used the ability I homebrewed for her a while ago with a few tweaks off my earlier version:

  • Lathander’s Protection: As a reaction, Ireena can call upon Lathander and turn her blood into liquid sunlight in response to being bitten. Any creature that comes in contact with her blood will take 4d10 Radiant damage, and an additional 2d10 for every additional round it remains in contact with her blood. The effect lasts for up to one minute, and she takes 2d6 damage for every turn the effect is active. Visually, her body appears to glow and light pours out of her eyes. After invoking this ability she has Disadvantage on Constitution, Strength and Dexterity checks for 48 hours, and cannot use any Channel Divinity abilities for 48 hours.

It fucks up anything that bites her but she pays a price too.

Just to give you an idea of the crap my party has to deal with, when you get an Archfey mad she retaliates by shapeshifting your friend into five successive forms culminating in an adolescent white Dragon.

Since I have a (not yet born) character whose father is a Dragonborn and whose mother is a Djinn I've been trying to figure out what that would even look like both physically and stat wise. I think most of the physical abilities would be from his dad and his magical ones from his mom but with some crossover between the two.

So far I think he looks mostly like a Dragonborn but with an unusual blue grey skin color not common among Dragonborn. And maybe whispy things where he would have scales on his head.

Stat wise I think he would be an Air Genasi with Draconic Bloodline Sorcery, but instead of a Copper Dragon's elemental abilities he has an Air Genasi's. So instead of acid breath he has wind breath for instance.

Also probably has some minor traits like a tendency to float without realizing it or affect the airflow in a room based on his moods. Which must have been interesting for his parents when his powers first manifested.

I've been talking with my players a lot about my DMing philosophy and it definitely dovetails with my dislike of overly controlling people and my experiences with an overly controlling and frankly abusive DM.

So here's a brief list of some points of my DM philosophy:

  1. The DM's main goal should be for themselves and the players to have fun. If this isn't happening the reasons should be discussed so whatever is causing the problem can be fixed.
  2. Players should feel their characters have agency and that the player has control over a character's backstory and motivations. The DM has no place deciding these things but can offer suggestions.
  3. As a caveat to the above, players are free to have their character act as they wish but must accept the consequences of their actions. You can be a murder hobo, but other characters will take notice of this behavior and respond to it. Consequences can be up to and including PC death.
  4. As a second caveat, the players should accept that the DM will challenge their character and that the character will change based on these experiences, for better or worse. They don't have to undergo a dramatic shift but it will inevitably happen. PCs should not be static.
  5. The DM has the right to exercise veto power in certain cases regarding player backstory and abilities if they would break the game. This should not be employed often or lightly.
  6. PCs are allowed to have conflicts with each other in game but those conflicts should not spill over into real life. If players have issues with each other they should discuss it out of game with the option of a DM being an intermediary.
  7. By extension, if a player has an issue with the DM they should approach the DM to discuss it privately. If the issue affects the whole group it should be discussed in the group.

This can be expanded or altered as needed but that’s the basics as I play them.

My campaign: Features attempted genocides, questions of identity and self worth and a running subplot about a survivor of a tyrannical kingdom ruled by a vampire Lord and her PTSD from what happened there.

Also my campaign: Features a library with a giant cat, a Warforged famous for his extremely long tongue, a semi senile Dragon grandpa, a running joke about the Warforged giving out cabbages and oranges, the Eldritch Knight being a fashion obsessed drow with an inept ninja sent by her family following her, a Barbarian/Warlock courting the Goddess of Death, copious amounts of salt from the Arcane Trickster and a Lizardfolk Cleric who eats just about everything.

Things Rajiv Copperscale has definitely done

Been late to an event because halfway there he realized he forgot his pants

Rolled a Nat 1 so he tripped on the stairs but got a Nat 20 on the way down and stuck the landing with a perfect Olympic flourish

Slept in Tahira's bottle because clouds actually make a great bed

Own many many conjured pens because he keeps misplacing them and making new ones

Forgot that most people do not, in fact, float in mid air and his wife is the exception

Started on the dad jokes as soon as they found out Tahira was pregnant

How do I strike a balance between player choice and making an interesting narrative? I mean, I don't want to just write a book but I also don't want them ignoring my carefully crafted narrative? When is a gentle nudge too gentle, and when is it just the DM saying "don't do that."

This is a really complex thing to try and balance, but it can be done! The way I usually do it is to ultimately leave it up to the players as to when they come back to the “main story,” by making consequences for ignoring obvious hooks. That lets them make choices, but eventually they gravitate toward the narrative.

I tend to have the main story going on in the background regardless of what the players choose. They aren't always lock step with it but events happen that will impact them.

Luckily my group is pretty good at getting hints that hey, maybe this is important.

Is it normal for players to question their DMs? Especially when it comes to how NPCs and enemies are reacting to things?

Nope! It sounds like you’ve got a backseat DM.

Yeah that's obnoxious behavior. Personally if a player has a real problem with a choice the DM made I would prefer they talk to me privately. But just as the players have agency over their characters that goes the other way to the DM and the choices they make.

Can Someone Explain

Why everyone loves The Raven Queen so much? Nentir Vale is now not FR, and I’d rather not remember anything that happened in 4th edition. I think it’s mostly just because is a death god and called “The Raven Queen”, which is way cooler than most death gods usually, but not sure if there is more to it than that.

Briefly, a few (non-comprehensive) things.

Firstly, the name is Metal as all hell.  Superficial? Definitely, but certainly more inspiring than Nerull.

Secondly, she’s not Evil.  Which makes her much more useful and interesting than “I just want to kill everything and rule a universe of the Undead”, which was her 3.5 predecessor’s (again, Nerull) thing.  She can be an enemy, especially if the PCs are trying to bring someone back from the dead.  She can be an ally.  She has her own agendas that may or may not align with those of the PCs or their patrons.  There’s plenty of options for how to incorporate her into a campaign other than The Bad Guy or The Bad Guy’s Boss, which was quite refreshing.

Because, again, her 3.5 predecessor was really one-note, which can limit options and interesting applications.

And because she hates intelligent undead she’s a lot more use to players, who have some easy hooks to latch on to if they want to make a follower of the Raven Queen.

As someone who has turned her into a major player in my campaign the fact that a lot of her back story is so mysterious helps a lot because it gives a lot of room for interpretation. My version seems to be a lot nicer than other versions, even the Critical Role version, but it gives DMs flexibility. I've even put in that she appears to people as what they need to see to make the transition easier so there's a built-in explanation as to why she can look different.

Right now she's the patron of our Hexblade Warlock who is also trying to romance her which is interesting.

Incidentally the official version that they put out in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes I have officially decided to ignore completely because it took away everything that people liked about the character. Especially since I loved the original explanation that she took over from Nerull by basically pulling a Judith on him.

So our DnD party has a Hexblade Beserker and another war-forged Beserker in addition to an Arcane Trickster rogue and a mage who’s class I’m not too sure of. HB has been on a quest to gain the Raven Queen’s favor and become her champion. In one particularly tough boss fight, our HB’s weapon was thrown from his hands. HB: *a rusted, badass looking scythe materializes in his hand from out of thin air, given to him by the Raven Queen* WB (who normally speaks in Drow Sign/doesn’t vocalize because he’s mute): *yelling in battle* SHE COULDN’T EVEN GET YOU A NEW ONE?????

After getting permission from player to torture her character however I saw fit I decided that the seven-foot-tall Warforged who hates birds got imprinted on by a set of four ducklings.

Quoth the Warlock: "Congrats you are now a father."

Who are now named One, Two, Three and Five at the suggestion of the Bardlock.

NPC Profile: Julia Carpates III

  • Age: 52
  • Height: 5′4″
  • Relationship Status: Widowed
  • Favorite Food: Lemon Cake
  • Favorite Color: Blue

Lady Julia Carpates III is the current ruler of Raetia and Queen in all but name, though her family chooses not to use that title due to the region once existing under Cassian rule. She’s ruled for 34 years after inheriting the title from her father, Luther Carpates, and married Immanuel Humthall, a scion of a noble house. With him she had four children; Julia IV (known as “Lia” or “Julia the Younger”) Ezra, Marcus and Camilla. Immanuel died in 1478 from an illness while Ezra disappeared two years later under mysterious circumstances, and the combined losses left Lady Julia emotionally shattered. Considered a fair and kind ruler, few people in Raetia truly know the Lady due to her need to maintain a dignified image, though most have sympathy for her because of the tragedies that have befallen her.

You know, I see a lot of posts out there about dumb shit that players do and while all of those posts are incredibly valid, I feel like this is dumbass DM erasure. I dearly love every story about bards who seduce the final boss and warlocks with sugar daddies and all that BUT I think DMs are greatly misunderstood to all be these serious controlling entities who just want their players to follow through with their perfectly planned scenerios. Here’s to all the dumbass DMs out there who:

- forget their NPC names and constantly make up new names for unimportant recurring NPCs when the players see them in hopes that they wont remember

- plan a whole dungeon around one (1) spongebob reference that they really wanted to fit in

- accidentally give two NPCs the same name bc you just pull from a list and you forgot to cross it off

- choose to homebrew everything bc they have an Artistic Vision but the vision is just that you want there to be three gnomes in a trench coat selling sketchy magical items somewhere in the setting

- use the same dumbass voice for every NPC but with different 90s surfer slang for different characters

- make just awful items and make their players buy them (I’m currently working on the “Ross From Friends” tramp stamp of +1 AC)

- realize they only have 28 minutes before the next session to plan and instead make text posts on tumblr.com

Anyway if any DMs want to add onto this with some dumbass shit they’ve subjected their players to feel free

Forgets about certain NPCs and has to come up with what they're doing on the spot while everyone else is talking.

Can't follow two inter PC conversations at once and has to tell the players to limit it to one at a time to avoid confusion.

Keeps making NPCs that the Players just want to adopt including two Golems, a humanoid rhino and a literal ancient dragon.

Having to improv when the players decide to go to a clothing shop which is where we get Torben Gunn who is literally just Tim Gunn as a gnome.

Giving the players crates of cabbages and oranges they found on a pirate ship because I was trying to be historically accurate and then having to deal with one character throwing / giving cabbages and oranges to people until I had to set a finite number of them.

All of my NPC accents eventually turning into Russian because it's the only other language I speak fluently.

I'll tell a little DM secret.

The vampire they fought this week had a mark on his throat that suggests it was cut when he was alive and he can only talk in a really raspy, quiet voice, but being a vain bastard he doesn't like that so doesn't speak much.

I added that during the fight because I forgot to have him say anything and the players noticed. So I came up with that on the spot.
