Happy Egg Day!
I really, honestly wish that title was an exaggeration. The Arkansas state legislature recently passed a law requiring a minute of silence at the beginning of each day in public schools, which is explicitly provided for children to silently pray. You'd think that was bad enough.
Unfortunately, when an atheist mother voiced her concerns and objections about this asinine bill (specifically referring to the harassment her 8-year-old atheist daughter would likely receive when the other children noticed she wasn't praying), Representative John Payton, the man of the hour, simply told her to read two bible verses that would answer her question.
Not that it matters, but what do those verses say?
Here’sRomans 1:19-25:
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; butbecame vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened… Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools
… the hell?
And, of course,Psalm 14:1 reads:
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
Way to go, Representative. Way to go.
You've heard of Richard Dawkins. Charles Darwin. Mark Twain. ... There are some amazing atheists who just don't get the same credit... --- Sorry for the format, I'm on my phone. Enjoy the article, it's nice to see some POC and women. ~Mooglets
For those not fully informed, there is some dialogue between some high profile atheists (Sam Harris and PZ Myers) regarding profiling Muslims at the airport. Sam Harris recently wrote an article on his blog suggesting, in no uncertain terms, that we should be profiling Muslims for screening before boarding an airplane. This post stirred up some controversy and PZ Myers weighed in on his blog, repudiating Harris for his stance. There has been some back-and-forth, and it can be easy to lose track of who said what, especially since many of the blog posts are buried under newer content. For those unaware of this ongoing discussion, or those who haven’t been keeping up, please refer to the ordered links below. I will update this page as the discourse develops.
This is an interesting one. All the posts are linked in the article at the above link.

Religious pundits from bishops to the Iona Institute bemoan the attacks from secularists on traditional Catholic values.Religious pundits from bishops to the Iona Institute bemoan the attacks from secularists on traditional Catholic values.
Yet for all their bluster and hand-wringing, for all the tabloid outrage, “militant secularism” makes as much logical sense as “aggressive pacifism” or “hardline tolerance”; it is an oxymoron, a cynical attempt to paint equality and fairness as infringing upon the religious, who seem aghast that after decades of entitlement they might actually be expected to play fair.
The concept of secularism is separation of church and state; one has the right to practise whichever religion one likes but not to have their particular belief mandated for others, nor the right to impose their viewpoint.

Black atheists are relatively hard to come by. Even more rare, however, are the black atheists and agnostics accepted by their family despite their lack of religious faith.
Saw this link somewhere else and fail to remember where - anyway, a 4-page PDF about evolution.

This is a response to the Pope's claim that the Nazi movement was atheist. When it was nothing of the sort.
Even in our own lifetime, we can recall how Britain and her leaders stood against a Nazi tyranny that wished to eradicate God from society and denied our common humanity to many, especially the Jews, who were thought unfit to live. I also recall the regime's attitude to Christian pastors and religious who spoke the truth in love, opposed the Nazis and paid for that opposition with their lives. As we reflect on the sobering lessons of the atheist extremism of the twentieth century, let us never forget how the exclusion of God, religion and virtue from public life leads ultimately to a truncated vision of man and of society and thus to a "reductive vision of the person and his destiny"
Quotes are from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolf_Hitler's_religious_beliefshttp://www.nobeliefs.com/hitler.htm
The point of this is not to imply that the Pope is or ever was a Nazi but instead to simply imply that he is either purposely trying to associate atheism with Nazism or he is a complete idiot.
A fun and interesting little device.
Have a go.

Now that the word about "the Jesus Discovery" is out in the open, outside experts are weighing in — and many of them look upon the robotic exploration of a 1st-century Jerusalem tomb as a technological tour de force resulting in an archaeological faux pas.
On one level, the "Jesus Discovery" investigators saw this project as a follow-up on the sensational claim they made five years earlier in "The Lost Tomb of Jesus," that Jesus and members of his family were buried in what is now a southeast residential neighborhood of Jerusalem. On another level, they set forth what they said were the earliest known evidence of Christian references in the Holy City — in the form of an inscription referring to resurrection on one casket, and a fishlike design on another casket.
Today, several experts specializing in 1st-century Christianity said the investigators failed to make their case on either level.
"In my assessment, there's zero percent chance that their theory is correct," said Andrew Vaughn, executive director of the American Schools of Oriental Research, or ASOR.
Christopher Rollston, an expert in Semitic epigraphy at Emmanuel Christian Seminary in Tennessee, said that although the underground chamber is "a nice tomb ... it's hard to press it into service as an impressive find."

Just sounds like yet another attempt at forcing magic onto real science. Not gonna happen, people.

Just over a month ago, the Supreme Court said they didn’t want to hear an appeal from the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners (in North Carolina), putting the final nail in the coffin on their attempts to keep praying to Jesus before meetings.
An hour away, it looks like the Rowan County Board of Commissioners don’t want to take the hint. In fact, they prayed to Jesus at their meeting earlier this week:
The National Secular Society boasts about 7,000 members – the same number as the British Sausages Appreciation Society. (Angela Rippon, no less, will be on hand for its Bacon Connoisseurs week, March 19-25.) The bangers enthusiasts celebrate the succulent delights of pork in every guise: grilled, baked, or fried. Secularists, too, want their own pound of flesh – but only Christian flesh will do.
They must have licked their lips in satisfaction last Friday, with a ruling banning prayers from local council meetings. This gave the secularists’ campaign to rip Christianity limb from limb new impetus, and, I’m sure, new targets: Army chaplains, nurses who offer to pray for hospital patients, and employees who wear crosses. Ban expressions of faith from the public arena, and faith schools will have to close their doors; Catholic hospitals will shut down; a host of charities will face closure. The result will affect believers and non-believers alike. Who will step into the breach to deliver the high-quality services that the Christian (and in many cases the Jewish and Muslim) community has offered, free of charge, for centuries? The state won’t, and I have yet to come across a National Secular initiative that feeds the poor or cures the ill.

Point, Texas (pop. 792) is not the easiest place for a single lesbian to raise her child. But neither her sexuality nor her unwed parenthood are enough to make Renee Johnson an American conservative’s worst nightmare. As she explained to me when I met her at Rains County Library, “I’d rather have a big ‘L’ or ‘lesbian’ written across my shirt than a big ‘A’ or ‘atheist’, because people are going to handle it better.”
We had met in a private room because Johnson worried that anywhere else in the town, people might overhear us and be offended by her godlessness. No wonder she often feels alone in her non-belief. But Johnson is far from unique. As I found out when I travelled across the US last year, atheists live in isolation and secrecy all over the country. In a nation that celebrates freedom of religion like no other, freedom not to be religious at all can be as hard to exercise as the right to swim the Atlantic.
America is the well-known exception to the rule that the wealthier and better-educated a country is, the less religious its population. As a Pew Research Center report put it, when it comes to religiosity, “the US is closer to considerably less developed nations, such as India, Brazil and Lebanon than to other western nations.” But what is less discussed is what this means for the minority who are not just apathetic about their faith, but have actively rejected it.
The issue is somewhat neglected because it’s not usually perceptible on the coasts and in the larger cities, but the almost complete absence of overt atheism is striking at all levels of US public life, even in cosmopolitan areas.

This is a very, very large image, so click the link below and look at the whole thing. It's sobering, and sums up precisely why I have a problem with religion.
