I want to clear up some confusion I see circulating on ‘dominant planets’. If you are interested, although it is not imperative, in calculating which planets express most generously in the birth chart it takes more than counting the signs and applying basic maths.
Some astrologers believe that the dominant planet is the chart ruler. So the ruler of the ascending sign in its planet and house position will suggest the dominant planet. For example of you have Cancer rising you will look to the Moon and it’s placement. If it is in Virgo in the 4th house, then the individual’s ‘chart ruler’ will be Moon in Virgo in the 4th house.
Other astrologers believe one or two forces will strongly influence a chart and its focus cannot be denied. All things will be considered to calculate the dominant, such as it’s position on the natal wheel, the sign it is placed, if the energies accelerate or find themselves in detriment, elevated planets will be emphasized, the amount of aspects made (especially to the Sun, Moon, and angular houses) mutual receptions, its house position, and the chart type. Unfortunately it is not a matter of simply counting how much ‘Virgo’ or ‘Sagittarius’ seems to be prevalent on a birth chart.
But along with this sort of basic compartmentalized view of astrology, the dominant may or may not always be so important. Human beings find a way to label one another everywhere we go, and astrology is so important because when it is used correctly it encapsulates the whole spirit, the music of all the planets playing a one in a million melody, the whole cosmic dance. You are not a ‘Saturn dominant’ or a ‘Venus dominant’, you, are you, a soul expressing as it’s own unique starry masterpiece.
