i think the ascending is the portal of entry to incarnation and the entire natal chart/blueprint is filtered through this part, splayed by the position of the four angular houses (1st house (ascending) 4th house (immun coeli): where i came from , 7th house (descendent): who i love 10th house (midheaven): who i want to be), its on the horizon, so its what we look to emanate, a horizon zoom. there is a kind of mirror of this horizon sign in the personality. like a gleam, a lamination.  i think the angular houses work like sub layers and an energy field in front of us in terms of our personality, and not so much generated like energy from within like planets.

i think the ascending used to have a bigger impact on personality. older astrology focuses on the ascending a lot. this was when everyone knew their ascending signs and most people identifed with this. when time of birth stopped getting printed on birth certificates, people could only associate with their sun sign and the consciousness shifted. i think ascending signs are more revelatory in esoteric astrology as it relates to the soul purpose and rays of wisdom
