Chris Christie, Asshole of the Day for October 28, 2014

In the words of Jon Stewart just last night: "Why does Christie have to be such a dick about everything?"

First, Christie called hero nurse Kaci Hickox "obviously ill" and sealed her inside an unheated area with no shower and just a box for a toilet. To which the nurse responded: "First of all, I don't think he's a doctor. Second, I don't think he's ever laid eyes on me. And thirdly, I have been asymptomatic since I've been here."

Then, Christie was ridiculed by health experts including Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Then, in the wake of intense media backlash, and only after Kaci Hickox tested negative for Ebola, Christie allowed her release.

Christie tried vainly to defend his policies on Fox News Sunday.

But by then it was too late. Christie's unscientific over-reaction had backfired. Everyone knew it. Whether you heard it from TIME Magazine or the White House or Elizabeth Warren you knew Christie was using politics, not science to treat Ebola.

That might have been a good time to revaluate a quarantine policy that Christie and his advisers knew would likely make the Ebola epidemic worse. Instead, Christie went on the TODAY show to tell the world that his dumb policy was staying in place: "We're not moving an inch."

For playing politics with public health. For ignoring the opinions of health experts and scientists. And, yes, for being so reliably a dick, Chris Christie is, for the seventh time, Asshole of the Day.

Asshole of the Day for June 2, 2014: Sarah Palin

Just days before deserting her post as Governor of Alaska in 2009, Texans for Sarah Palin reported the following:

Governor Sarah Palin offered her support and encouragement to the family of a Ft. Richardson soldier captured in Afghanistan. "Todd and I are praying for Private First Class Bowe Bergdahl, his family, and all of his fellow soldiers who are putting their lives on the line to defend our freedom and protect democracy abroad,” Governor Palin said. “The capture of Private Bergdahl and the bombings in Jakarta prove that we have not defeated terrorism, and that radical extremists will stop at nothing to attack Westerners and our ideals." More than 7,000 soldiers and airmen stationed in Alaska are currently deployed overseas. "Our men and women who volunteer to wear the uniform have the best training and experience of any military in the world,” said Lt. Gen. (AK) Craig E. Campbell, Adjutant General of the Alaska National Guard. “We know that when we deploy that anything can happen, and we pray that PFC Bergdahl’s fellow soldiers can find him quickly and reunite him with his family."

This news release has since been scrubbed from the Alaska Governor's website (h/t to @clydetheslyde for bringing it to our attention.) . Today, of course, Palin was singing a different tune, with one of her standard anti-Obama Facebook rants in which she accuses the President who killed bin Laden of helping bin Laden and slams him for calling Bowe Bergdahl's service "honorable.".

For being awful, inconsistent, hypocritical, nonsensical, but predictably opportunistic about the release of a US soldier held captive for almost five years, half-Governor Palin is, for the seventh time, Asshole of the Day.

Asshole of the Day, August 10, 2013: Markwayne Mullin

According to his website, Oklahoma Congressman Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) is a successful businessman, rancher, family man and youth leader in his church.

Despite that, he’s also an asshole.

Apparently, all of his real-world and church-based experience have failed to give Mullin exposure to any fellow human beings who might stay physically fit despite requiring food aid for their family. Or anyone who may potentially have lost their job or otherwise fallen on hard times AFTER buying a pair of Nikes.

At a time when food stamp fraud is down to 1%, Mullin thinks physical fitness—especially when combined with Nikes and spandex—is “100% proof” of widespread fraud in the food stamps program. It’s hard to imagine anyone can become a “successful businessman” when they make sweeping judgments like that based on a sample size of just one family.

For his lack of compassion and blatant stupidity and just because he makes us sad, Markwayne Mullin is Asshole of the Day.
