Asshole of the Day finds the public figures who are the biggest assholes each day

Paul Ryan, Asshole of the Day for March 6, 2014

If you've been paying attention to politics at all over the past few years, you've no doubt noticed the GOP sliding into an abyss of abject stupidity and stunning, breathtaking insensitivity. And just when you think they've tapped those wells dry, they find a way (fracking, probably) to squeeze just a little more out of them.

For example, behold onetime GOP VP candidate Paul Ryan, who just today told the assembled crowd of mouth-breathers at CPAC that if only poor kids' parents loved them more, they wouldn't need free lunch programs to feed them.

He made this point while telling a story that was supposed to give us all the sads: a “young boy from a very poor family” who got government-funded free lunches at school but was totally bummed out about it.

“He wanted his own lunch, one in a brown paper bag, just like the other kids,” Ryan said, adding, “He wanted one, he said, because he knew a kid with a brown paper bag had someone who cared for him. This is what the left does not understand.”

You know what, Paul Ryan? I've been that kid. And on behalf of all those kids, fuck you.

I was raised in Southern California by a single mother, who had me young and struggled to support us. When I was about 5, a teacher friend of hers told her I was extraordinarily bright and stressed the importance of getting me in the right schools to nurture that.

The closest and best public school district was, naturally, in a wealthy area. But my mom somehow found an apartment she could afford there, and the next thing I knew, she'd packed me, our cat and what few belongings we had into her beat-up VW Bug and off we went.

My mom's friend was right – the school was phenomenal. I still remember those teachers. They were warm and encouraging and supportive, and never made me feel like the underprivileged kid.

And yes, I got government-sponsored breakfasts and lunches. But contrary to Paul Ryan's story, it was not a reenactment of a Dickens novel. No dirt-smudged faces. No gruel. No moonfaced moppets begging for more.

Look, I knew my circumstances were different than the other kids somehow, but no one shamed me. And no one shamed my mother, who worked her ass off so her kid could go to the best school possible. (You want love, Paul? Put THAT in a brown paper bag, you smug, condescending douchebag.)

Fast forward a few years and I went on to become the first woman in my family to graduate from college. These days, I make a nice living and pay back into the same government system that helped me get where I am now. And I'm happy to do it.

Because somewhere there’s a little girl whose single mom is doing the best she can – and I’ll be damned if I’m going to make it any harder for them than it has to be. But Paul Ryan wants to make it harder, and that's why he is the Asshole of the Day.

UPDATE: Turns out the anecdote about the little boy wasn't about a kid getting a government subsidized lunch!

Is Paul Ryan Asshole of the Day (again)?

Is Paul Ryan asshole of the day for saying that kids who get free lunches at school don't have anyone at home who loves them?

Ryan insisted that liberals were only offering people “a full stomach and an empty soul.”
He then told a story of a “young boy from a very poor family” who received free lunches at school “from a government program.”
“He didn’t want a free lunch,” Ryan insisted. “He wanted his own lunch, one in a brown paper bag, just like the other kids.”
“He wanted one, he said, because he knew a kid with a brown paper bag had someone who cared for him. This is what the left does not understand.”

Paul Ryan says liberals only offer a "full stomach and empty soul", whereas he wants to give the poor an empty stomach and a full soul that goes to Heaven when they starve to death.

The GOP has no ideas to solve poverty. They only have ideas that involve more starving, sickness and humiliation:

And this is just in 2014.

Keep in mind that solutions to feed the poor and help them pay their own way like the American Jobs Act, raising the minimum wage, or infrastructure spending are all unable to even come to a vote in the House.

Asshole of the Day, December 21, 2013: Jack Kingston

It seems a week can't go by without some idiot in the GOP finding something to say mean about the poor, or some new way to humilate the poor. One day it's Rep. Trey Radel voting to force poor people to take drug tests to get government benefits, all the while doing cocaine while collecting his government benefits. Another day it's Sen. Rand Paul saying it's a disservice to keep giving unemployed people benefits. It just doesn't stop.

This week it was Rep. Jack Kingston said this:

“But one of the things I’ve talked to the secretary of agriculture about: Why don’t you have the kids pay a dime, pay a nickel to instill in them that there is, in fact, no such thing as a free lunch? Or maybe sweep the floor of the cafeteria — and yes, I understand that that would be an administrative problem, and I understand that it would probably lose you money. But think what we would gain as a society in getting people — getting the myth out of their head that there is such a thing as a free lunch,” he said.

But then as the criticism mounted, Rep. Kingston responded saying:

The congressman told CNN that his comments weren’t a “policy statement,” and complained about a lack of open discussion on the matter.
"This is not targeted to any one group," Kingston said. "It would be very helpful for kids in any socio-economic group to do chores and learn the work ethic. Those kids aren’t there because of any fault of their own and I never suggested that they were."
"I never did say poor kids," he added.

"I never did say poor kids." That's his defense. He didn't even apologize, he just clarified that he never said "poor".

Well, look, asshole, once you started talking about free lunch programs, everyone knew who you meant, including you. And for pretending you didn't and refusing to apologize, well, that just makes you Asshole of the Day.

It is Rep. Jack Kingston’s first time as Asshole of the Day.

Asshole of the Day, September 5, 2013: Thomas Kersting

Should a school make a kid go hungry because his parents didn't fill out the right paperwork? Or if he doesn't have enough money to pay for lunch?

That was the question posed to Thomas Kersting on Fox & Friends today:

Carlson asked Kersting if he “had a problem with the fact that the kids ultimately end up being punished in this situation when it really is the parents’ fault.”
“Again, I think it is misleading that the kids are going to be punished,” Kersting replied. “We have more food than any other nation. You know, no kid is going to starve. You know, if one day a kid doesn’t have lunch, right, maybe that’s a teaching moment when that kid doesn’t have lunch. That may sound harsh saying that, but we’ve got to get people to start being responsible for themselves.”

The point of subsidized school lunch programs is so that no kid goes hungry. But, not any more. According to this asshole, the program can serve another purpose-- teaching parents responsibility by making their kid starve.
