Liz Cheney, Asshole of the Day for August 5, 2014

It is also a fact that torture doesn't work. The Senate report says it doesn't work, and John McCain who was tortured during the Vietnam War also says it doesn't work.

"This president is an utter disgrace. He’s got a situation where, as your last two reports showed, you’ve got crises erupting around the world. And he is expending more time, more energy, more passion, more aggressive activity in targeting and going after patriots, heroes, CIA officers and others who kept is safe after 9/11," Cheney said on Fox News' Hannity.
"He’s lying about what they did, he’s slandering them, he went to Cairo and did it in 2009. Today he did it from the podium of the Oval Office. It’s a disgrace. It’s despicable," Cheney continued.

She says two things here: The first is that Obama shouldn't be examining or discussing our history of torture because the world isn't safe. The second is her claim that Obama is lying and slandering by claiming the US tortured people. On the second she is demonstrably wrong-- the report proves we tortured.

But it's her first assertion that is more novel and worth examining. There's "crises erupting around the world", and this should keep Obama from ever investigating or talking about torture. Really. Too many things happening? Look, there will always be an excuse not to explore our own actions, but we must. It is fair to try to contest the conclusions from the investigation or decisions that result, but that doesn't mean it's legitimate to not ever have inquiries.

If this reasoning sounds familiar, it's because she's basically saying it's TOO SOON to talk about torture. I'm sure you're familiar with that argument-- it goes like this:

  1. Horrific shooting occurs
  2. It’s too soon to talk about gun control because of [insert most recent horrific shooting here].
  3. Nothing gets done
  4. Shootings keep happening since nothing gets done
  5. New shootings result in further delays in discussing or getting things done
  6. …and so on

It's become so routine that I made this chart:

And how does it apply here? Well, according to Liz Cheney, the too much is happening to talk about torture. So we never stop torturing or examine whether we should stop. And because we keep torturing, then we keep creating new enemies who hate America, in part because we torture. And those enemies attack, which means we can’t talk about torture again yet. Here's the chart:

This is why the TOO SOON argument is so offensive to me, and why every time I hear it I think they might as well be saying:

It’s too soon to talk about gun control after JFK got shot!

It’s too soon to talk about torture after 9/11!

TOO SOON.

TOO SOON.

TOO SOON.

Nope. Repeating it in ALL CAPS doesn’t help either. It’s time to talk about torture, Liz Cheney. A report has been done. We need to talk about it. American needs to own up to the fact that

  • torture doesn’t work
  • America tortured under Bush and Cheney

And Obama has made it clear that he doesn’t plan to hold anyone accountable criminally for what they did, not even Dick Cheney:

Even before I came into office, I was very clear that in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, we did some things that were wrong. We did a whole lot of things that were right, but we tortured some folks. We did some things that were contrary to our values. I understand why it happened. I think it's important when we look back to recall how afraid people were after the twin towers fell and the Pentagon had been hit and the plane in Pennsylvania had fallen and people did not know whether more attacks were imminent and there was enormous pressure on our law enforcement and our national security teams to try to deal with this. And, you know, it's important for us not to feel too sanctimonious in retrospect about the tough job that those folks had. A lot of those folks were working hard under enormous pressure and are real patriots, but having said all that, we did some things that were wrong. And that's what that report reflects.

We need to face up to what was done. The report is the first step. But Liz Cheney doesn’t want us to admit we tortured or that it doesn’t work. And for that, she is the Asshole of the Day.

It is Liz Cheney's second time as Asshole of the Day. Her previous time was for pushing to deny her own sister the same marriage rights that she herself enjoys.

Is Les Kinsolving Asshole of the Day?

Is Les Kinsolving asshole of the day for saying Mary Cheney should be mute and comparing gays to pedophiles and necrophiliacs?

Under the heading, “The Gaying Of America,” WND columnist Les Kinsolving criticizes Mary Cheney for daring to speak up to defend her family and waxes nostalgic for a time “when lesbians and others with alternate sexual orientations were comparatively mute.”

“How would lesbian Mary expect her sister to regard her orientation if she were polyandrous (female polygamy), a pedophile, incestuous or necrophiliac?” Kinsolving asks.

So, to Les Kinsolving, it's bad enough that gays insist on existing, but they should just be grateful we let them exist and be content to shut up about their own rights. And, he adds, they're not much different than necrophiliacs or pedophiles. Wow.

Is Matt K. Lewis Asshole of the Day?

Is Daily Caller's Matt K. Lewis asshole of the day for saying Mary Cheney should shut up and let Liz Cheney pander to bigots?

Yesterday we named Liz Cheney Asshole of the Day for saying her sister shouldn't have the same right she does. Ms. Cheney has her defenders, but we were surprised by this new angle from the Daily Caller.

In his column this morning, Mr. Lewis describes the breakdown of the traditional family being not so much about whether gays can marry, but the rule about speaking out against a member of your family. He goes on to say that Liz Cheney is pandering and Mary should shut up about how she thinks she deserves the same rights that Liz does. Yes, he really says this:

The recent fight between the Cheney sisters raises an obvious debate over gay marriage, but there are plenty of people writing about that. And, besides, I can’t help being obsessed with a competing narrative — what this says about family loyalty.
Let’s begin with loyalty to one’s blood relatives — and the fact that Mary Cheney apparently has none. Let’s all let Mary in on a little secret here: YOUR SISTER IS PANDERING.

I guess to Mr. Lewis, Mary Cheney's loyalty to her sister means that she must accept her sister saying in public how she shouldn't get to have rights, but there's no rule on Liz Cheney to defend her sister to have rights. Is not Liz speaking out against the family by saying her sister shouldn't be allowed to marry?

Asshole of the Day, November 18, 2013: Liz Cheney

Gay marriage is increasingly popular with American voters, and is now legal in some states. And yet, there are still some in the GOP who feel that granting gays some rights, but not the right to marry, is an acceptable position. For a group who carries around the Constitution and Declaration of Independence to think it's OK to grant some people fewer rights than others is particularly galling.

Even among hardliners, a family member who is gay is often the tipping point when they finally find the empathy to decide that everyone deserves the same rights. Apparently Liz Cheney doesn't have even that much empathy:

On Fox News Sunday, Liz explained that while she does oppose discrimination against same-sex couples and supports some benefits for same-sex couples, she still believes in the “traditional definition of marriage”.
Liz commented to the New York Times, “I love my sister and her family and have always tried to be compassionate towards them. I believe that is the Christian way to behave.” The Times also spoke to Mary, who said it is “impossible” for the sisters to reconcile on this point and expressed no concern that the feud might hurt Liz’s campaign.

The most telling part is where she says she “tried to be compassionate towards them”. Tried. Because she wants us to know she doesn’t think she has to be compassionate, you know, because they're gay. And Liz Cheney's definition of being compassionate somehow doesn't include supporting her sister in the struggle to get the same rights as she has.

And even beyond that, the "traditional definition of marriage" is a weak argument. If tradition is sacred and inviolable, then can we also assume that Ms. Cheney supports slavery? Or women as property of their husbands or fathers? Those traditions also go back to biblical times, so should they too be enshrined in law?

And finally, just keep in mind that by opposing gay marriage, Liz Cheney is more extreme than her father. Yep, it takes a real asshole to be to the right of Dick Cheney.

She "tried to be compassionate towards them". Tried. Because she wants us to know she doesn't have to. What a monster.

And, we should point out, that opposing gay marriage puts her to the right of her father. That's right. She's to the right of Dick Cheney.
