After three straight polls showing bidnessman David Perdue leading the Senate field, somebody leaked a video of the Dollar General CEO getting on his high horse at a local party event in January:

I mean, there’s a high school graduate in this race, OK? I’m sorry, but these issues are so much broader, so complex. There’s only one candidate in this race that’s ever lived outside the United States. How can you bring value to a debate about the economy unless you have any understanding about the free enterprise system and how — what it takes to compete in the global economy?

The “high school graduate” bit is an allusion to Karen Handel, a once-formidable candidate who is not doing well and has absolutely nothing to lose by making resentment of this comment the centerpiece of her campaign. As for the “lived outside the United States” credential, this really sounds strange coming from a member of the party whose last president had rarely even left the country before entering the White House.

The former vice presidential candidate pronounced herself “disappointed” by the David Perdue comments that came to light yesterday, and declared it a “sad day” for Republican politics. She said Ronald Reagan faced the same sort of pushback that Karen Handel now faces when he left his acting career to enter politics.

Gwyneth Paltrow inadvertently sparked a global working-mom revolt with her comments about how hard it is to juggle motherhood with the lifestyle of a globe-trotting superstar actress: “I think it’s different when you have an office job, because it’s routine and, you know, you can do all the stuff in the morning and then you come home in the evening,” she told E! “When you’re shooting a movie, they’re like, ‘We need you to go to Wisconsin for two weeks,’ and then you work 14 hours a day and that part of it is very difficult. I think to have a regular job and be a mom is not as—of course there are challenges—but it’s not like being on set.”

But then Will takes a mighty leap off what might be called the "anti-populist cliff." He says:

Political ignorance, Somin argues, strengthens the case for judicial review by weakening the supposed "countermajoritarian difficulty" with it. If much of the electorate is unaware of the substance or even existence of policies adopted by the sprawling regulatory state, the policies' democratic pedigrees are weak...

... An engaged judiciary that enforced the Framers' idea of government's "few and defined" enumerated powers (Madison, Federalist 45), leaving decisions to markets and civil society, would, Somin thinks, make the "will of the people" more meaningful by reducing voters' knowledge burdens. Somin's evidence and arguments usefully dilute the unwholesome democratic sentimentality and romanticism that encourage government's pretensions, ambitions and failures.

Take away the five-dollar words and overactive thesaurus and what you have here is a prescription for overriding the people's democratic choices because "unwholesome democratic sentimentality" (AKA belief in majority rule) allows the plebian riff-raff to make choices that encourage the government's "pretentions and ambitions."

But no worries mates, no worry at all. Good old Captain George Will has your best interests at heart. After all, letting conservative judges make decisions for you will make the "will of the people more meaningful by reducing voters' knowledge burdens."
