Thomas Corbin, Asshole of the Day for February 15, 2015

Now I suppose reasonable adults can have conversations about the pros and cons of various domestic violence legislation. However, if you're opposed to increased protections for battered women, you should perhaps lay off the jokes about women not being equal to men.

And yet, that's exactly what happened last week. While discussing pending criminal domestic violence legislation, South Carolina Senator Thomas Corbin has this conversation:

At one point in the conversation – which quickly escalated into a confrontation – Shealy is said to have angrily asked Corbin where he “got off” attacking women.
“Well, you know God created man first,” Corbin said, reportedly smirking at Shealy.  “Then he took the rib out of man to make woman.  And you know, a rib is a lesser cut of meat.”

Given this other incident where he wants Sen. Shealy to leave the room, she being the only woman in the Senate, he clearly thinks that women aren't equal to men, or he'd have no problem making his bizarre criticism of Common Core in front of her.

But this statement is really over the top, and joke or not, reflects how he really feels about the place of women in society. And for that, he is the Asshole of the Day.

It is Sen. Corbin's first time as Asshole of the Day.

Nikki Haley, Asshole of the Day for October 16, 2014

While Republicans like to demonize Democrats as prioritizing the wishes of lazy moochers, the stereotype that Democrats have of Republicans is that they are in the pocket of Wall Street and Big Business.

Which is why I was so shocked to hear South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley say this:

During the Tuesday night gubernatorial debate, Democratic candidate state Sen. Vincent Sheheen called for the state government to no longer display the Confederate flag, noting that many young people leave South Carolina "all too often."
Haley retorted by claiming that the Confederate flag has not kept companies from coming to the state.
"What I can tell you is over the last three and a half years, I spent a lot of my days on the phones with CEOs and recruiting jobs to this state. I can honestly say I have not had one conversation with a single CEO about the Confederate flag," she said.
She also said that she herself has helped combat the state's image problem.
"But we really kind of fixed all that when you elected the first Indian-American female governor," Haley said. "When we appointed the first African-American U.S. senator, that sent a huge message."

You want to point out that you aren't white and that you appointed an African American Senator? Fine. Go ahead. But if you say that sends "a huge message", then you have to account for the message that the State flying the Confederate Flag has.

The Confederate Flag has one and only one purpose-- to represent the country the Southern states created to continue black slavery. The Civil War was about slavery, and the flag was its symbol. That's what it means. Now individuals might have their own reasons for flying it, but the State of South Carolina flew that flag in its fight to preserve slavery, and keeping it flying now refers to that history.

And please don't tell me the Civil War was about states rights or something other than slavery. It started before Lincoln took office-- not based on Lincoln's actions but their fears of what he might do-- for the purpose of preserving slavery. It was fought over slavery. And it did not end until slavery was abolished. In fact at the end of the Civil War, with the South having unconditionally surrendered, the only change from before was the end of slavery. Those are facts. It's not like the South won and then gracefully freed all their slaves after forcing Lincoln to pass an amendment for states rights.

But I understand the flag is still controversial in South Carolina and that it has many supporters among the white voting public. So it's not odd that South Carolina politicians are still squishy on whether having the state fly a flag of treasonous slaveholders. What is odd is that Gov. Nikki Haley reveals that she doesn't care much about voters-- the people who really influence her are the CEOs. Her statement lays bare that she prioritizes the opinions and wishes of CEOs over the voters and people of her state. And for that, Nikki Haley is Asshole of the Day.

It is Nikki Haley's first time being named Asshole of the Day.

Is Kevin Bryant Asshole of the Day?

Is South Carolina Sen. Kevin Bryant asshole of the day for inserting the Book of Genesis into a bill designating the official state fossil?

A bill fulfilling an 8-year-old girl’s wish to designate a type of woolly mammoth as South Carolina’s official state fossil has been put on ice after a state senator proposed an amendment declaring God created the animal.
...
The fossil bill sailed through the House -- but ran into a snag in the Senate, after Republican state Sen. Kevin Bryant introduced an amendment stating that God created the mammoth.
Bryant’s amendment sought to insert a passage from the book of Genesis into the bill, which says God created the beasts of the field on the sixth day of Creation.
“And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good,” the passage reads in part.
Bryant’s original amendment was ruled out of order, so Bryant re-introduced the amendment, with changes. The new amendment refers to "The Columbian Mammoth, which was created on the Sixth Day with the other beasts of the field."

So an 8-year-old girl wants the state to have an official fossil, something many states have but not South Carolina, and this guy takes the opportunity to make a passage from the Bible an official part of the law?

This is just nuts. And it can't possibly be constitutional. Adding a passage from the Bible sure sounds like favoring one religion.

UPDATE: After posting the link on Twitter, I got this awesome reply:

@assholeofday I think he just designated himself as the official state fossil.

Is Lindsey Graham Asshole of the Day?

Is Lindsey Graham asshole of the day for saying the situation in the Ukraine was caused by Obama's inaction in Benghazi?

It started with Benghazi. When you kill Americans and nobody pays a price, you invite this type of aggression. #Ukraine
— Lindsey Graham (@GrahamBlog)
March 4, 2014

There's a few more along this line over at TPM, but you get the point.

As we said yesterday when we named Sarah Palin Asshole of the Day for saying Obama's "mom jeans" were responsible for Russia's actions in the Ukraine, before it's fair to blame "weak leadership" for an outcome, you have to believe that

  1. The actors care what the US does or thinks about a situation, and it's not clear under any circumstances that Russia-- under Putin or anyone-- cares what anyone else thinks about how they handle something on their border which they consider so strategic that they have naval bases there.
  2. Different action by Obama would have a different outcome.

Let's just pretend for a moment that President John McCain and Secretary of State Lindsey Graham handled Syria and Benghazi their way:

  • September 30, 2012: With troops still fighting in Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan, President McCain invaded Libya to avenge the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi. After two weeks of fighting, troops are bogged down, with 87 dead and 243 wounded.
  • September 30, 2013: With troops still fighting in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and Libya, President McCain reinstates the draft after sending 150,000 soldiers into Syria, 800 of whom were killed the first day by Sarin gas.
  • February 21, 2014: With the Army stuck bogged down in five wars (Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, and Syria), President McCain is facing impeachment after massive protests over the draft. Even Republicans say they can no longer support McCain with Rasmussen polls showing 84% of voters don't understand why we need to be fighting so many wars at once.
  • February 28, 2014: Putin invades Ukraine, full in the certainty that the US has not even a military band to send against him.
  • March 5, 2014: Osama Bin Laden, goes on to declare victory over the United States: "After over a decade of war, the US has bankrupted its treasury, and is no closer to catching me. They are weaker now than they were on September 11."

So much for strong leadership!

Is Lindsey Graham Asshole of the Day?

Is Lindsey Graham asshole of the day for saying Obama's weakness "invites aggression" even though nothing would've stopped Putin from invading Ukraine?

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Sunday said that President Obama has not signaled enough strength in approaching Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

"Well, number one, stop going on television and trying to threaten thugs and dictators. It is not your strong suit," Graham said on CNN's "State of the Union." "Every time the president goes on national television and threatens Putin or anyone like Putin, everybody's eyes roll, including mine. We have a weak and indecisive president that invites aggression. President Obama needs to do something."

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/graham-obama-weak-russia-ukraine

Look, Senator, what would Obama have done that would have stopped Putin? Nothing. Nothing. Nothing.

Ukraine borders Russia and contains Russian naval bases. No amount of war in Syria or elsewhere is going to change Putin's mind about what he's going to do on his border and especially where his bases are. He knows that no president in the last 20 years is going to start a war with him over it.

So please stop pretending there's an amount of "tough talk" that would have changed anything here.

Is Garry Smith Asshole of the Day?

Is Rep. Garry Smith asshole of the day for taking funding away from colleges for including books with gay themes?

South Carolina lawmakers voted Wednesday to withdraw about $70,000 in funding from two public colleges that included books with gay themes on their freshman reading lists.
...
The Republican lawmaker who pushed the legislature to punish the colleges for their choice of books told the newspaper that schools shouldn't force one view on students.
“One of the things I learned over the years is that if you want to make a point, you have to make it hurt,” state Rep. Garry Smith said. “I understand academic freedom, but this is not academic freedom. ... This was about promoting one side with no academic debate involved.”
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/south_carolina_yanks_funding_colleges_teaching_gay_themes

"I understand academic freedom"? Um, no you don't. This is clearly a case where you don't want public schools acknowledging that gays are people who exist and deserving of sympathy and rights just like anyone else.

Anytime someone wants people to stop talking about gays, they are trying to make them not exist so they can then marginalize them. It's hard to marginalize people if other people feel they know them. Gay rights didn't get any momentum until more gay people came out and people realized they were just like everyone else in every important way.

Richard Cash turns "I Have A Dream" into anti-choice rant

image

Richard Cash, candidate for senate, has a dream, but it has nothing to do with MLK or equal protection. It's all about making women carry babies no matter what:

“Today is Martin Luther King Day,” Richard Cash said at the South Carolina Tea Party Convention in Myrtle Beach. ”Martin Luther King did a lot to help us as we struggled with racial equality and justice, friendship and kindness between the races, and we celebrate that achievement. What I want to say to you today is, I too have a dream.”
Cash then denounced the Supreme Court’s landmark Roe v. Wade ruling and called for legal personhood rights for embryos.
“When we consider the 55 million unborn children that have been killed in this land since 1973, I too have a dream,” he remarked. “When we consider that one-third of the generation since 1973 is not with us because of abortion, I have a dream. And what it is? I have a dream that one day each and every unborn baby created in the image of God will enjoy the same constitutional protections that you and I receive.”

And then there's this:

Only the stupid think #MLK wouldn't be in favor of Obamacare. He accepted an award from Planned Parenthood but was against contraception?
