Donald Trump, Asshole of the Day for September 12, 2014

In some ways, Donald Trump is like any other racist moron who still can’t accept that America has a black President. In others, he’s just like an average Fox News viewer--an uninformed dolt who refuses to give Obama any credit for turning the economy around following the Bush crash and the worst financial crisis in 80 years. But unlike your average dumb racist, Donald Trump also plays the role of “successful businessman” in an elaborate con game he’s been working on the less-educated members of the populace for years. His idiocy goes unchallenged when he appears on the fact-free morning show Fox & Friends. And many of his 2.7M Twitter followers seem to be under the illusion that he: a) may still decide to run for President; and b) would be good at it. More than anything else, Trump is a proud and opportunistic asshole. So when news outlets reported that a Trump-owned golf course had denied President Obama a tee time over Labor Day weekend so as not to inconvenience its members, Trump seized the opportunity to milk the story and, yes, be an even bigger—and more disrespectful—asshole than his club manager had already been. He tweeted:

If Obama resigns from office NOW, thereby doing a great service to the country—I will give him free lifetime golf at any one of my courses!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump)
September 10, 2014

Needless to say, both the “lamestream media” and the RWNJ birthersphere took the bait. Too few, though, have pointed out the fallacy at the center of his offer. Obama leaving office would not be “a great service to the country.” Calling Obama an economic failure, which Trump frequently does, is something only a moron who told Americans not to buy stocks after the crash in 2008 —right before the greatest five-year accumulation of wealth in America history was about to begin—would do. In fact, Forbes recently crunched the data, and declared that Obama has outperformed even St. Ronald Reagan in terms of jobs, growth and investing.

For saying he'd offer up one of his golf courses as an incentive for a President he's lied about and insulted for almost six years to quit his job, Trump is Asshole of the Day.

President Barack Obama, Asshole of the Day for August 14, 2014

The images coming out of Ferguson, MO are surreal: police firing smoke bombs, tear gas and rubber pellets at mostly peaceful protesters. Officers pointing guns at unarmed marchers. Journalists being manhandled and arrested for simply doing their jobs. It's as if this country has traveled back in time to 1965.

Local residents, confused and angry, gathered to protest the shooting and the Ferguson police department's decision not to release the name of the officer who killed Brown. Tensions were high and a mostly peaceful protest turned violent.

President Obama addressed the situation in Ferguson today, and instead of using this as an opportunity to address racial tension and police brutality in America, he fell flat. Sure, he said all the right things about Brown's death being a loss and expressed sympathy for his family. But, when his remarks turned to the violence in Ferguson, he chose to condemn looting and other disruptive acts by a few residents before he addressed the inexcusable use of police force against the protesters:

There is never an excuse for violence against police or for those who would use this tragedy as a cover for vandalism or looting. There’s also no excuse for police to use excessive force against peaceful protests or to throw protesters in jail for lawfully exercising their First Amendment rights.

There are no gray areas here: the police brutality we're seeing in Ferguson is unacceptable. The U.S. fancies itself an international beacon of democracy and justice and equality, but our president chose to condemn the destruction of property before he denounced the abuse of police power and the blatant violation of the protesters First Amendment rights.

The ordering of Obama's statement is disturbing. Not because he's black, but because he's human. And because he's our president. He had an opportunity to move this country forward, if only a little bit, by speaking frankly about what's going on in Ferguson. But he chose to maintain the status quo, giving property a higher value than human rights and human lives.

The President's remarks had their feel good moments and he, of course, tried to promote healing:

We are united in common values, and that includes belief in equality under the law, basic respect for public order and the right to peaceful public protest, a reverence for the dignity of every single man, woman and child among us, and the need for accountability when it comes to our government.

But here's the thing: this isn't a time for healing. It's a time for real talk. Racial tensions in this country are at a new high - partly because the president is black and some people can't deal with that reality - and Obama had the chance to address them. He chose to tip toe around the issue.

Obama spoke eloquently - and called for action - after the Sandy Hook shootings and around issues of gay marriage. But on this issue he was detached.

But it's easy to call out the obvious idiots, the racists who say things that make us cringe. It's a lot harder - and riskier - to single out the do nothings. But that's what Obama is. He's the one guy who has the platform to openly address issues of racial profiling and police brutality but today he said very little. That's why he's Asshole of the Day.

It is President Obama's first time as Asshole of the Day.

Steve King, Asshole of the Day for July 24, 2014

After 6 years almost no one is willing to go "full birther" any more. No one except Donald Trump maybe. You can't come right out and say Obama wasn't born in America without people tuning you out, and everyone knows that. Even the people who deep down hate him and feel he is foreign know it.

Rep. Steve King, the xenophobic congressman famous for suggesting that most immigrants are drug mules with cantaloupe-sized calves, starts a speech saying he won't assert where Obama was born. He's not a birther, you see. But then he plays to his crowd's racism by suggesting Obama is foreign:

“His vision of America isn’t like our version of America. That we know,” King said of Obama. “Now I don’t assert where he was born, I will just tell you that we are all certain that he was not raised with an American experience. So these things that beat in our hearts when we hear the National Anthem and when we say the Pledge of Allegiance doesn’t beat the same for him.

Now there's a dog-whistle-- "not raised with an American experience".

It's true that Obama didn't live his entire life in America, but he only lived overseas for 3 years as a child. Other than that he lived here, among Americans. His mother was an American. The grandparents he lived with were American.

Of course Rep. King doesn't even explain what American experience it is that Obama doesn't have, because he doesn't have to-- he knows that his crowd will know what he means.

We're all familiar with the "I'm not racist, but…" statements, and how they are all pretty much racist. Once you start putting people in groups and making them all the same in your head, you're in racist territory. It's like these people think that racism is only lynchings and Jim Crow laws, and not the wider array of discrimination that happens in life. And what is Rep. King doing if not saying "I'm not a birther, but…"? So when he starts claiming Obama doesn't have an American experience, it's obvious what he means. And for that, he is Asshole of the Day.

It is Steve King’s first time as Asshole of the Day.

Dick Cheney, Asshole of the Day for July 17, 2014

Impeachment has been a hot topic among Republicans and Tea Partiers ever since Sarah Palin said "It's time to impeach" last week.

But not everyone agrees. John Boehner thinks his little bullshit lawsuit is the right course of action, even though he is ridiculously suing the president for delaying the employer mandate, which House Republicans both hate and even voted to delay for one year themselves.

“I’m not prepared, at this point, to call for the impeachment of the President,” Cheney said on CNN’s “The Lead with Jake Tapper.”
“I think he is the worst President of my lifetime," Cheney said. "I fundamentally disagree with him. I think he’s doing a lot of things wrong. I’m glad to see House Republicans are challenging him, at least legally, at this point, but I think that gets to be a bit of a distraction just like the impeachment of Bill Clinton did."

"Worst President of my lifetime." There have been 13 presidents in Dick Cheney's lifetime:

  1. FDR
  2. Truman
  3. Eisenhower
  4. JFK
  5. LBJ
  6. Nixon
  7. Ford
  8. Carter
  9. Reagan
  10. George H. W. Bush
  11. Clinton
  12. George W. Bush
  13. Obama

So Cheney is saying that he thinks Obama is worse than Nixon AND George W. Bush. Of course he worked in both Nixon and Bush's administration, so I guess in his warped view of the world, he thinks they did a good job.

Look, if you're going to say Obama is a worse president than Nixon and George W. Bush, you need to assert how something he has done or hasn't done is worse than:

  • Running a criminal conspiracy out of the White House to manipulate the opposing party into choosing the weakest candidate, and then covering it up
  • Lying about intelligence to get America into a second land war in Asia
  • Letting a crony run FEMA into the ground and leaving people to die after Hurricane Katrina

But Dick Cheney has no examples that are worse than those things. None. Because there aren't any. And for that, he is Asshole of the Day.

It is Dick Cheney's fourth time as Asshole of the Day. His previous wins were for

Is President Obama Asshole of the Day?

Asshole of the day: Barack Obama, for saying he’s not interested in photo ops right after he invited the governor of Texas to shake his hand for a photo op while refusing to meet with him for a meaningful discussion on the influx of illegal immigrants on the Texas border.

Of course there was more to the Perry story than just not shaking hands— he also claimed that Obama was “in on it somehow”, meaning that Obama had conspired to create this crisis of Central American immigrants.

So is President Obama asshole of the day? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Asshole of the Day for June 2, 2014: Sarah Palin

Just days before deserting her post as Governor of Alaska in 2009, Texans for Sarah Palin reported the following:

Governor Sarah Palin offered her support and encouragement to the family of a Ft. Richardson soldier captured in Afghanistan. "Todd and I are praying for Private First Class Bowe Bergdahl, his family, and all of his fellow soldiers who are putting their lives on the line to defend our freedom and protect democracy abroad,” Governor Palin said. “The capture of Private Bergdahl and the bombings in Jakarta prove that we have not defeated terrorism, and that radical extremists will stop at nothing to attack Westerners and our ideals." More than 7,000 soldiers and airmen stationed in Alaska are currently deployed overseas. "Our men and women who volunteer to wear the uniform have the best training and experience of any military in the world,” said Lt. Gen. (AK) Craig E. Campbell, Adjutant General of the Alaska National Guard. “We know that when we deploy that anything can happen, and we pray that PFC Bergdahl’s fellow soldiers can find him quickly and reunite him with his family."

This news release has since been scrubbed from the Alaska Governor's website (h/t to @clydetheslyde for bringing it to our attention.) . Today, of course, Palin was singing a different tune, with one of her standard anti-Obama Facebook rants in which she accuses the President who killed bin Laden of helping bin Laden and slams him for calling Bowe Bergdahl's service "honorable.".

For being awful, inconsistent, hypocritical, nonsensical, but predictably opportunistic about the release of a US soldier held captive for almost five years, half-Governor Palin is, for the seventh time, Asshole of the Day.

Robert Copeland, Asshole of the Day for May 16, 2014

It's 2014, but apparently there are still people who think it's OK to use the N-word. And not just some mouth-breathing racist on Twitter upset that there's a holiday for Martin Luther King. Nope, apparently a police chief in New Hampshire thinks it's OK for him to say it:

"I believe I did use the 'N' word in reference to the current occupant of the Whitehouse (sic)," Copeland wrote in an email to the resident, as quoted by WMUR. "For this, I do not apologize -- he meets and exceeds my criteria for such."

He didn't even try to code it by using "thug" like some people do. Just right out with it. The president is a N*****. That's what he says.

And he knows it's wrong, because he emails and says "n-word", not actually using the word. But he doesn't apologize. He claims President Obama "meets and exceeds my criteria". Oh, so this idiot has criteria for using the n-word! It's not just a racist knee-jerk reaction to a black man in authority!

So, for calling the President of the United States the N-word and standing by it, Robert Copeland is the Asshole of the Day.

It is Robert Copeland's first time as Asshole of the Day, but hardly the first racist to be named.

Is Mike Huckabee Asshole of the Day (again)?

Is Mike Huckabee asshole of the day for saying Obama is lying about being a Christian?

Describing his own opposition to equal marriage rights, Huckabee explained, “The position that I hold is the position that Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden held in 2008. Barack Obama held it until 2012.” “And my question that I would love to pose to the president is this: Mr. President, please explain that when you said in 2008 at the Saddleback Church forum that you stood for traditional marriage and you did so because you were a Christian and because it’s what the Bible taught, please answer: Were you lying then, are you lying now, or did the Bible get rewritten?”
More at Think Progress

Actually it's not clear what Huckabee is accusing Obama of lying about-- being a Christian or supporting gay marriage.

But in any event, Huckabee is trying to gotcha Obama. You know, that thing Sarah Palin hates so much. He's trying to say Obama supported Huckabee's position then, so Obama is either lying or a flip-flopper, as though flip-flopping were the worst thing ever.

Except there's a few problems with what Huckabee is doing.

1. Flip-flopping may have been fatal to Kerry in 2004, but that was before Bush became the most hated and least respected president since Nixon. You see, Bush made a virtue out of never changing his mind. Except he turned out to be wrong a lot, and stuck with his wrongness way past the point of reason. So trying to tag someone as a flip-flopper isn't what it used to be.

2. People can change their mind. Outside of the base of homophobes that Huckabee is trying to play to, the majority of Americans support gay marriage and changed their mind just as President Obama did. And those people don't feel like flip-floppers or liars for supporting same-sex marriage now having possibly voted against it in 2004 or 2008. No, they feel like they've done the right thing after their eyes were open.

3. Obama was for civil unions, but not for marriage. It was about the word marriage, not about conferring rights to gay couples in committed relationships. And since 2008 people have learned that civil unions have many less rights than marriage, and that matters. We want gays to have the same rights as all other adults do.

It's inaccurate for Huckabee to act like his position and Obama's in 2008 was the same on this issue. Huckabee actively campaigned against gay marriage. Huckabee did not, to my knowledge, ever support civil unions for gay couples. Obama supported civil unions and while he said he was against gay marriage, he didn't campaign on it or in any way push for Prop 8.

Is Sam Clovis Asshole of the Day?

Is Senate candidate Sam Clovis asshole of the day for saying if Obama were white, he'd have been impeached by now?

"I would say there are people in the House of Representatives right now that would very much like to take the opportunity to start the process," Clovis said of impeaching Obama. "And I think the reason that they're not is because they're concerned about the media."
"They're concerned about the media in the context of how we would cover it because he's a black president?" the Herald asked.
"Yes," Clovis responded.

The Brendan Eich controversy is really getting out of hand. People keep trying to post this on my wall, and it's a distortion leaving out some key points. Aside from the one I made in the image about how Obama's position has been consistent with the majority of Americans, and certainly of the party he leads, Eich's position is now out of step, and most importantly, he hasn't changed his mind. He still wants to deny gays the full rights every straight adult enjoys.

Here's some more from Saturday's post where we named Glenn Beck Asshole of the Day for his comparison of gay activists to terrorists, based on the Eich being forced from his job.

Josh Marshall had some good thoughts about the controversy at Talking Points Memo, and I’d like to highlight this one:
But being a CEO isn’t just any job. And I think it has and should have fewer de facto and de jure rights than your regular run of the mill job. It’s in the essence of being a CEO that you’re the public face, the public representative of the organization or company you run.
It’s a very imperfect analogy but we would all find it unacceptable for a president to reach into the bowels of the civil service or even into his or her administration proper and can someone just because they held some unpopular view. But no one would think anything of it if a president fired a cabinet secretary for almost any reason. An imperfect analogy. But I think there’s a functional parallel.
Gay rights is at the forefront of our political consciousness and struggles today. And Mozilla lives at the heart of an industry and a part of the country where full equality for LGBT Americans is a near sacrosanct part of the culture.
So it’s important to understand that Brendan Eich didn’t lose his job just because he financially supported outlawing gay marriage— he lost his job as CEO of an activist organization because he did not reflect the values of the organization that he was supposed to represent.

The important part is Eich's values were out of step with the organization that he became the public face of, and he wasn't willing to change his position or even shut up about it. But that's not the narrative you'll hear on Fox News.

Ortiz tweeted the photo above with Obama:

What an honor! Thanks for the #selfie, @BarackObama pic.twitter.com/y5Ww74sEID

But it turns out this wasn't some spontaneous selfie:

The slugger posted the photo to Twitter, where it has gotten over 39,000 retweets. It also made the rounds on ESPN and the morning newscasts. White House aides who adore the team attended the event bearing Red Sox hats. Fun was had by all.
Except the candid moment was nothing more than a stunt by Samsung, the maker of Ortiz's phone. The Boston Globe confirmed Tuesday night that Ortiz had signed a new deal with the Korean company "to become a social media insider."
Not even the President was in on it. "He did not know," Jay Carney told Boston Globe.
Samsung issued a statement saying they were "thrilled" that this "historic moment" was captured by one of their phones.
"We were thrilled to see the special, historic moment David Ortiz captured with his Galaxy Note 3 during his White House visit," the company said in a statement. "It was an honor to help him capture such an incredible and genuine moment of joy and excitement. Similar to the selfie Ellen was able to capture during the Oscars, this was an opportunity for David to share the incredible moment with his fans.

Scott Lively, Asshole of the Day for April 1, 2014

Scott Lively is running for governor in Massachusetts, and if he has his way, there'd probably be a law every bit as repressive towards gays as the one in Uganda because it turns out he helped to get that law passed.

When I went on to point out that the President Obama is "wholeheartedly" against this legislation, Dr Lively chuckled and said: "I think Obama may as well be a homosexual himself. He is certainly a radical homosexualist - meaning a person, whether they are homosexual or not, meaning a person who is 100 per cent invested in the homosexual agenda." Rather perplexed by his unexpected comment, I said; "So you think Obama is a homosexual?" He replied: "I think he may be." I asked Dr Lively what his view was based upon and he referred to an article on an online site, World Net Daily. When I asked if he thought President Obama was part of the gay agenda, he replied: "Anyone who is trying to break down the protections for the natural family and legitimize sexual perversion is complicit in the recruitment of children."

Obama is gay. Maybe. Or at least "100% invested in the homosexual agenda". Sounds bad.

Of course the "homosexual agenda" which Lively thinks is so sinister amounts to being treated the same as everyone else-- having the same rights and responsibilities, paying the same taxes, filing the same paperwork and the lot. There are no special privileges being asked for.

But Scott Lively equates equality for gays with a loss of privilege for bigots like him, and for that, as well as his calling Obama a possible homosexual, he is the Asshole of the Day.

It is Scott Lively's first time as Asshole of the Day.

Is Donald Trump asshole of the day for saying Obama "put a big target on Manhattan"?

Donald Trump slammed President Barack Obama for saying that a nuclear weapon "going off in Manhattan" is the biggest security threat to the United States. "It was one of the dumbest statements I have ever heard from a president, and I don't just mean the president of this country," Trump told host Greta Van Susteren on Fox News' "On The Record." "He just put a big target on Manhattan."

Really, Donald? So you're saying that prior to the president's statement, no one had ever targeted Manhattan before? Except for 9/11. And 1993. And every time the UN is in session. And the Times Square guy. But now that Obama made that statement, now they'll target Manhattan for sure.

Donald Trump isn't just a hateful bigot, he's also a colossal idiot.

Is Mitt Romney Asshole of the Day (again)?

Is Mitt Romney asshole of the day for blaming Obama and Hillary Clinton for not being able to see the future in Crimea?

“The president’s naïveté with regards to Russia, and his faulty judgement about Russia’s intentions and objectives has led to a number of foreign policy challenges that we face,” Romney opined to CBS host Bob Schieffer on Sunday’s edition of Face the Nation. “And unfortunately not having anticipated Russia’s intentions, the president wasn’t able to shape the kinds of events that may have been able to prevent the kinds of circumstances that you’re seeing in the Ukraine, as well as the things that you’re seeing in Syria.”
“I think effective leaders typically are able to see the future to a certain degree, and are able to take actions to shape it in some way,” he added. “And that’s, of course, what this president has failed to do. And as secretary of state, Hillary Clinton as well.”

I love when guys like Mitt Romney attribute magical powers to leadership ability. Or suggest that Obama and Hillary could have prevented all this or dealt with it better but then go on to suggest absolutely no different course of action than what was done except for magical leadership. First it was Lindsey Graham blaming "weak leadership", then Sarah Palin blamed Obama's "mom jeans", and then Mitt himself pulled this crap last week by blaming Obama without offering even one thing he'd have done differently, but that time without the magic future reading power.

Perhaps this magical leadership ability to read the future only comes with magical underwear.

D’Souza: With Obama you get this idea that his real enemies, from his point of view, it’s not Putin and it’s not Islamic radicals, it’s us. He’s waging a kind of war, a political war if you will, using the instruments of the state against conservatives and he’s good at that war and he’s fighting it aggressively. I don’t believe in this idea that Obama’s an amateur, he’s a bungler; no he’s very effective at what he wants to do.

Sarah Palin, Asshole of the Day for March 4, 2014

Does weak leadership invite aggression? Can it be proven? That is the the obsession with the chattering classes since Friday, that somehow Obama's leadership style of not invading countries for no reason and using diplomacy invites other countries to get out of line.

But of course there's a problem in claiming this in all situations-- sometimes events have nothing to do with us. It's true. So it's fair to ask of anyone who claims that Putin invaded the Ukraine because of Obama's alleged "weak leadership" if Russia or Putin was likely to act any other way than they did to a situation on their border, where they still have naval ships, and there's still a sizable Russian leaning population.

Sarah Palin on Monday blasted President Barack Obama's "weak leadership" on the situation in Ukraine, saying the perception of Obama across the globe is of a guy in "mom jeans."
“Look, the perception of Obama, of him and his potency across the world is one of such weakness," Palin told Fox News' Sean Hannity. "People are looking at Putin as one who wrestles bears and drills for oil. They look at our president as one who wears mom jeans and equivocates and bloviates.”

Mom jeans? Sorry, governor, but you don't get to claim that "mom jeans" on the President allowed Putin to invade the Ukraine when the standard bearer for your party a year ago, Mitt Romney, was ridiculed for a month for wearing mom jeans, and by Fox News no less.

Of course it's pretty obvious what Palin thinks a good leader is and does:

Palin: “The world sees Obama as wearing mom jeans. If we want respect, we need a president who shoots wolves. From helicopters. In Alaska.”
— Top Conservative Cat (@TeaPartyCat) March 4, 2014

So, for accusing the President of what the leader of her own party wore in 2012, and for suggesting there is nothing more to international relations than acting tough, especially with a nuclear power, Sarah Palin is the Asshole of the Day.

Dick Cheney, Asshole of the Day for February 26, 2014

You know he's a Dick. But as he can't help reminding us, he's also an Asshole.

In an interview on Monday with Fox News, Cheney said that President Obama would: "much rather spend money on Food Stamps than on a strong military or support for our troops."

Cheney was slammed immediately for ignoring the fact that many of our current troops rely on Food Stamps--$100 million-worth were used at military grocery stores in 2013 alone. Not to mention the fact that 900,000 veterans nationwide--many of whom served in the unnecessary Iraq War that Cheney himself lied us into--rely on the SNAP program to feed themselves and their families.

But it took Major General Paul D. Eaton--who commanded troops during Operation Iraqi Freedom--to really remind us what a despicable piece of work Cheney is to this day: "Vice President Cheney is one of the architects of the worst foreign policy disaster of the 21st century," Eaton said. "We're young, but the decision to attack Iraq, and to do so in such an incompetent manner, does not give him a platform to say anything about the foreign policy under execution today."

In other words, it's Chickenhawk Cheney's own record--putting our troops in harm's way in an ill-planned war that had no legitimate justification--that shows the ultimate lack of respect. So even if the point Cheney was making was valid--which it wasn't--he should have enough respect for our current, Iraq-War-ending, Bin-Laden-killing President to keep his mouth shut.

Asshole.
