Paul "Skip" Stam, Asshole of the Day for June 25, 2014

"Shameful."

That's the word being used to describe North Carolina Republican "Skip" Stam's inflammatory remarks on the House floor Tuesday.

As Speaker Pro Tem, Stam is the second highest ranking Republican in the House, behind NC House Speaker Thom Tillis.

He's also an incredible f**king moron.

Stam claimed that preventing discrimination based on 'sexual orientation' would also protect those who engage in pedophilia, necrophilia, bestiality and more. He backed up his beliefs about 'sexual orientations' by handing out a list of from the outdated 2000 DSM-IV manual which the American Psychiatric Association said in 2013 erroneously listed some sexual disorders as "orientations."

Of course, Stam is not the first Republican to try to put bestiality and pedophilia into the same sentence as homosexuality (Rick Santorum is oft-googled on the topic.)

But seeing as he used the same list in 2010 to make a similar point (and was called on it then), the fact that he quoted from it again in a 2014 debate about hiring discrimination earns him the title Asshole of the Day.

Mark Meadows, Asshole of the Day for June 20, 2014

Obamacare's website is fixed and it exceeded the original projections for enrollment in the first year. The insurance companies who participated and plan to participate next year aren't raising prices astronomically. It's working. It could be better, but Republicans aren't interested in negotiating fixes, only full repeal.

And while Republicans won't admit that their predictions of gloom and doom were wrong, they just keep moving on to new accusations and negatives with no perspective of whether they were wrong in the past. They don't care. In a very insightful post, which I recommend you read, Jon Chait compares Republican critiques of Obamacare to vegetarian reviews of a rib joint. Since they are ideologically opposed to subsidized or standardized or regulated insurance, they will always harp on something because it can't work. He concludes by saying

It’s not the case that the flaws were all imagined, and some aspects of the law will struggle badly. But the basic enterprise is workable. I used to go on Twitter and ask conservatives to lay out what the criteria for Obamacare working as intended would look like. I never got a satisfactory response. You don’t take your barbecue reviews from people who think meat is murder.

And that's where we are. Which is how you get things like Congressman Mark Meadows complaining that insurance shouldn't cover maternity care:

MEADOWS: So you have to buy maternity, even though you may never have a child?
COHEN: That is correct.
MEADOWS: Are there other things you have to buy that you may never use?
COHEN: It depends on your personal family situation and your medical situation. I’ll say as an internist, and a primary care doc, that sometimes you don’t know what that medical situation will be going forward, and that’s the nature–
MEADOWS: But maternity is one that you can probably analyze pretty well for someone who’s in their 50s.
COHEN: Right, but it’s a minimal essential benefit we wanted to make sure that all Americans had access to.

This is offensive. Yes, you're 50 and you and your wife don't expect to have any more kids. But so what? You were both born of woman. You did not spring from the Earth one day. And if we're going to have health insurance, then shouldn't it include something that is so basic that it will effect every baby born henceforth? Do we only make laws for the living and not for the future?

And if you take his argument at face value, there are plenty of things that health insurance covers that only effect older people, but they are included. How do I know I'll grow to 50 or 60? Maybe I'll die. So why should my health insurance premiums this month or this year include things like dementia and heart disease? I'll pay those in my premiums when I'm 50 thank you. That's what he's saying. And once everyone's doing that, then it's not insurance, it's just pay as you go. If that's what he wants, then say it-- say you don't want insurance in America. But you don't, do you. You just keep harping at the problems or drawbacks of insurance, and offer no real plan that works.

So, for suggesting that since he's too old to need maternity care that it shouldn't be included in insurance, Mark Meadows is the Asshole of the Day.

It is Mark Meadow's first time as Asshole of the Day, though one of many for on the topic of Obamacare.

Is Greg Brannon Asshole of the Day?

Is Greg Brannon asshole of the day for saying food stamps enslave people?

Mr. Bannon is running for Senate and has Rand Paul's endorsement:

The answer is the Department of Agriculture should go away at the federal level," Brannon said in an interview with the North Carolina Tea Party highlighted by Mother Jones on Tuesday. "And now 80% of the farm bill is food stamps. That enslaves people. What you want to do — it's crazy but it's true — is teach people to fish so they can fish. When you're at the behest of someone else, you are actually a slavery to them [sic]."
Brannon has also argued that bipartisan compromises in Washington essentially "enslave" Americans.

Can we stop comparing things that aren't slavery to slavery? Didn't we make this point when Sarah Palin compared the national debt to slavery back in November (which remains our most popular post ever)?

Is Gov. Pat McCrory Asshole of the Day?

Is Gov. Pat McCrory asshole of the day for refusing to call a session to expand Medicaid in North Carolina?

Meanwhile, he said, rural hospitals are on the verge of closing because of lower Medicaid reimbursements, and as many as half a million uninsured people in North Carolina are finding out they're too poor to qualify for federal subsidies for coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

North Carolina racist asshole resigns after Daily Show airs his comments. Awesome.

You may recall he said things like:

In an interview centered on North Carolina's voter ID law conducted by the Daily Show's Aasif Mandvi, Yelton criticized "lazy black people that wants the government to give them everything."
"The bottom line is the law is not racist," Yelton said.
"Of course the law isn't racist, and you're not racist," Mandvi responded.
"Well," Yelton paused. "I've been called a bigot before. Let me tell you something, you don't look like me but I think I've treated you the same as anybody else. As a matter of fact, one of my best friends is black. One of my best friends."
"When I was a young man you didn't call a black a black," he added later. "You called him a negro."

Is Don Yelton Asshole of the Day?

Is Don Yelton asshole of the day for saying the photo of Obama as a witch doctor was making fun of his "white half"? The interview was shown on The Daily Show last night.

Yelton attempted to explain away the charges of racism — always a good idea — by: 1. Insisting that one of his best friends is black; 2. claiming that the photo of Obama dressed as a witch doctor that he shared on his Facebook page was making fun of his "white half"; recalling how, when he was young, black people were called "negras"; and bemoaning the fact that black people can use the word "nigger" but he can't.
"You know that we can hear you, right?" asks a visibly nonplussed Mandvi.

Keep in mind this was all in defense of a Voter ID law, which he claims hurts Democrats, but is not racist.

I satirized this Voter ID law over at WinkProgress as North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory: “Our Voter ID Law Is Just Common Sense.”

Don Yelton has been nominated for Racist Asshole of the Year, so vote for him now if he's your pick.

Asshole of the Day, August 13, 2013: Gov. Pat McCrory

Neither snow, nor rain, nor gloom of night, will stay North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory from signing objectionable laws.

Yes, last night with no notice, Gov. McCrory signed a voter ID law considered by many to be the worst in the nation. Ever since Justice Roberts declared racism over and gutted the Voting Rights Act, there's been a race among GOP controlled states to limit the voting by minorities. Many restrictions masquerade as fraud prevention, though many of these restrictions have nothing to do with voter ID or impersonation. For example, what do these things have to do with voter ID?

  • Shortening early voting from 17 to 10 days
  • End pre-registration for 16 and 17 year olds who will be 18 on election day
  • End same-day voter registration REGARDLESS OF WHAT ID YOU HAVE
  • Limit the types of paid voter registration drives
  • End straight ticket voting

Which of those things are Voter ID? Which of those things will limit in-person fraud? None.

This is a law to make it harder for minorities, the poor, and young people to vote, ad Gov. McCrory knows it, which is why he signed it in secret like a coward. A cowardly asshole.

Asshole of the Day, July 25, 2013: Gov. Pat McCrory

During his 2012 campaign for Governor, North Carolina Republican Pat McCrory made a straightforward pledge to the voters of the Tarheel State.

"What new restrictions on abortion would you be willing to sign?" he was asked during a debate.

"None," he replied forcefully.

"You can't really ask a follow-up question with that one," said the moderator.

Turns out she should have asked: "Are you sure you're not lying to us, you asshole?"

Because today McCrory said he would sign sweeping new restrictions on abortion as part of North Carolina's recently passed motorcycle safety bill.

That's right. It's a bill that makes riding a motorcycle that much safer by greatly reducing access to safe, legal abortion. These are pretty much the same restrictions the North Carolina GOP first tried to sneak into a bill banning Sharia Law. When that failed, they snuck them into the motorcycle bill without first notifying Democrats or the public.

And that's not all. Earlier this week, North Carolina Republicans passed a new law allowing guns into playgrounds and bars, which McCrory is also expected to sign.

All in all, not a good week for public safety or women's health in North Carolina.

And not a good week for the credibility of promise-breaking Gov. Pat McCrory, today's Asshole of the Day.

Asshole of the Day, July 11, 2013: Ruth Samuelson

The North Carolina GOP is sooooo jealous of Wisconsin and Ohio, who have already passed their own abortion restrictions, that they have to get in on the game. And fast!

First they tried to tack them onto a Shariah law bill, but then governor threatened to veto it.

But that didn't stop them. Spearheaded by Rep. Ruth Samuelson, they immediately snuck it on to a motorcycle safety bill, and tried to get it out of committee with no comment.

And despite all the bad press about taking away rights from women and closing abortion clinics, Rep. Samuelson claims ""It is not our goal to shut down every clinic in North Carolina. What we want to do is make them safer." But that's a lie--

The North Carolina proposal would require abortion clinics to meet the same standards as outpatient surgery centers, which bill supporters say would improve oversight.

The problem here is that most abortions aren't surgeries. They are a pill. And now for this pill-- but no others-- the GOP wants a doctor present the whole time. (Oddly there is no law requiring doctors be present for hours after a patient has taken Viagra!)
