Is Bryan Fischer Asshole of the Day for questioning the sexual preference of a district attorney?

Behold how Bryan Fischer, an Asshole of the Day many times over for his bigotry against gays, reacts to news of Rick Perry being indicted:

I've just received credible information that the D.A. who indicted Gov. Perry is an open lesbian. Abuse of power, anyone?

"Open lesbian"?

Bryan Fischer, Asshole of the Day for April 17, 2014

Bryan Fischer is an asshole. He has been featured on this site many, many times, and has been named Asshole of the Day five times prior to today. Usually though we feature him for his hatred of gays, which is so awful that the Southern Poverty Law Center designated the American Family Association where Fishcer works as a hate group. Yeah.

But Bryan Fischer is more than just a bigot. He can be offensive on many conservative topics, including income inequality. After discussing that the top 1% pay 30% of all federal taxes, Fischer told listeners that the poor ought to kiss the ground that the rich walk on:

the poor and middle class families in this country "ought to be kissing the ground on which [the rich] walk" because it is the top 1% that is paying for EBT cards and food stamps and federal housing.
The rich, Fischer asserted "ought to be given ticker tape parades once a week in all of our major cities to thank them for funding welfare for everybody"

Now of course Fischer doesn't discuss how the top 1% got all that income-- was it by manipulating laws to favor them, creating monopolies to raise prices, inheritance, spending $400 million on an election, or any of that other stuff. He's not interested in that.

Fischer portrays himself and his conservative beliefs as traditional and Christian. And he has studied religion extensively:

Fischer has an undergraduate degree in philosophy from Stanford University, and holds a graduate degree in theology from Dallas Theological Seminary. Fischer served at the Cole Community Church in Boise, Idaho and founded the Cole Center for Biblical Studies and was the church's director for thirteen years. Fischer then founded Community Church of the Valley and was senior pastor for twelve years. Before joining the board of directors of American Family Association, Fischer was also executive director of Idaho Values Alliance.
In 2004, he co-founded the Keep the Commandments Coalition, a group dedicated to keeping a Ten Commandments monument in Julia Davis Park in Boise. From 2000 to 2005, he served as a commissioner for the city's Park and Recreation Department.

But apparently when doing all that Bible study, Fischer missed the parts where Jesus praised the poor and vilified the rich.

The suggestion that the poor should kiss the ground the rich walk on should be offensive to any Christian. And that Fischer represents himself as a Christian and has studied the Bible extensively and says this, only makes it more offensive. So, for turning Jesus' own worldview of rich and poor upside down to give comfort to the rich, Bryan Fischer is the Asshole of the Day.

It is Bryan Fischer’s 6th time being named Asshole of the Day. Previous wins were for saying

Is Bryan Fischer Asshole of the Day (again)?

Is Bryan Fischer asshole of the day for saying immigration has put Americans "in a worse position than slaves"?

Fischer then took a call from a listener named Chris who said that he had to pull his child out of the local public school because nobody spoke English while he has been unable to find work in the insulation industry because he does not speak Spanish.
That prompted Fischer to declare that Chris was literally in "a worse position than slaves because at least slaves had a job"
http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/bryan-fischer-immigration-devil-and-slavery

"At least slaves had a job"? Really? That's your comparison.

There's just no way this caller is telling the truth:

First of all, where in America is there a public school where nobody speaks English?

Second, while there may be Spanish speakers in the insulation industry, there certainly are plenty of English speakers. And many of the customers are certainly English speakers.

Though it's possible I suppose that the caller isn't lying, and has somehow wandered into Mexico and is too stupid to notice he's no longer in the US.

That's how stupid this call is. But, sure, take this idiot's side since it allows you to speak out against immigration, Mr. Fischer.

Is Bryan Fischer asshole of the day for saying allowing homosexuals to have rights is like Jim Crow against Chrisitans?

Rights based on sexual deviancy are Jim Crow laws against Christians. Lead to segregation, illegal religious discrimination.
— Bryan Fischer (@BryanJFischer) February 19, 2014
Jim Crow is back: special rights for gays lead to economic, educational, social & employment disadvantages for Christians.
— Bryan Fischer (@BryanJFischer) February 19, 2014
The civil rights cause of our day: protecting 1st Amendment rights of Christians against the bullies and bigots of Big Gay.
— Bryan Fischer (@BryanJFischer) February 19, 2014
Liberal Democrats passed Jim Crow laws against blacks then, and are enacting Jim Crow laws against Christians today.
— Bryan Fischer (@BryanJFischer) February 19, 2014

This is just an awful argument, as we pointed out previously with Cresent Hardy, whose complaint was that protecting gays from being fired for being gay was somehow putting them above straight people who I guess could be fired for being gay. That's equality and fairness, not raising one group over another.

Look, ending second class and unequal treatment against one group of people is not discriminating against another group. Whatever you think of affirmative action, ending discrimination is not affirmative action.

Allowing rights to gays that everyone else enjoys is not Jim Crow for everyone else, unless you think you could make the argument that ending Jim Crow laws and giving blacks equal treatment under the law was Jim Crow for whites who were losing their ability to force the government to be racist and discriminatory. It just doesn't work.

Of course for Bryan Fischer this is just par for the course. He's always making ridiculous analogies to make his hate and bigotry sound like the victim and not the perpetrator of discrimination, and has already been named Asshole of the Day FIVE TIMES in 9 months, with countless other nominations.

But this is an argument that keeps popping up lately-- that treating gays fairly and the same as everyone else is really just discriminating and oppressing Christians. It's not, and we're going to keep calling it out.

Is Bryan Fischer asshole of the day for saying that legalizing homosexuality is "black genocide"?

"This is black genocide," he said.
"Let me put it bluntly," Fischer declared. "If you are for the legalization of homosexuality, you are for the acceptability of homosexuality, you are for the normalization of homosexuality, you do not care about black males. You have no compassion in your black heart for black males because they're being decimated by HIV/AIDS ... So why am I opposed to the normalization of homosexual behavior? Because I love black males. I want black males to live long, prosperous, healthy, disease-free lives"
http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/fischer-i-want-homosexuality-be-illegal-because-i-love-black-males

This is almost comical it's so extreme. Basically he's saying if you aren't a homophobe, then you must be a racist.

And he's not talking about gay marriage here, he's talking about making homosexuality itself illegal.

Is Bryan Fischer asshole of the day for saying "same-sex parenting is a form of child abuse"?

Regarding the same sex marriages at the Grammys, Fischer said:

"If you care about children," Fischer said, "this thing ought to appall you because gay marriage is bad for children. In fact, same-sex parenting - I'm going to be very direct here - same-sex parenting is a form of child abuse"
http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/fischer-performing-gay-marriages-grammys-was-abomination-because-same-sex-parenting-form-chi

And calling it child abuse? That's beyond the pale. There are real children being raised this way, so for you to allege one of the worst of crimes against their parents is hateful and bigoted.

How does this man still have sponsors?

Asshole of the Day for January 3, 2014: Bryan Fischer

Bryan Fischer is a frequent nominee and 4-time winner of Asshole of the Day in 2013. He narrowly missed being a finalist for Asshole of the Year, the only 4-time winner to miss the cut.

But even though he missed the cut, he still remains a big, big asshole. He kicked off 2014 by pronouncing that anyone who believes in evolution should be “disqualified from holding political office”:

"We don’t share ancestors with apes and baboons," he proclaimed. “In fact, I would suggest to you that if a politician, if somebody wants to exercise political power and he is an evolutionist, he is disqualified from holding political office in the United States of America.”
Fischer went on to clarify that he doesn’t think there ought to be a law banning people who believe in evolution from holding office, merely that “that American people shouldn’t vote for them because that guy, if he does not believe that we are created beings and that our rights come to us from God, that man cannot be trusted to protect your civil rights”.

You'll notice he has nothing to disprove evolution-- he takes it for granted that people will dismiss it for sounding ridiculous and far fetched.

People like Fischer like to imply that all Christians agree with their view of the Bible as literal truth and that evolution is obviously false, but that’s a lie. No less a figure than Pope John Paul II said he believed in evolution, and that it was not inconsistent with Church teaching. (The Pope did add that “If the human body has its origin in living material which pre-exists it, the spiritual soul is immediately created by God”, which hardly changes the essence of evolution which says nothing on the matter of souls.)

So no, Mr. Fischer, people who believe in evolution should not be banned from office, and maybe you should ask yourself why it is you're so concerned about science instead of spirituality when even the Pope is not.

It is Bryan Fischer's 5th time being named Asshole of the Day. Previous wins were for:

Of course he offered no proof against evolution, presuming his listeners would know what he means. Religious zealouts like Fischer like to pretend that all Christians agree with their view of the Bible as literal truth and that evolution is obviously false, but that's not the case. Pope John Paul II declared that he believed in evolution and that it was not contrary to Church teaching, adding only that "If the human body has its origin in living material which pre-exists it, the spiritual soul is immediately created by God".

Asshole of the Day, December 11, 2013: Bryan Fischer

Bryan Fischer is a regular here at Asshole of the Day. While he has only won four times, he is nominated almost every week for yet another ridiculously bigoted statement attempting to force his narrow view of Christianity on the country. He is a theocrat. And his latest pronouncement is particularly bad-- he claims the 1st Amendment only protects Christians, not other religions:

“At the time of the founding [of the United States], 99.8 percent of the population of the colonies were Christians. The other 0.2 percent were Jews,” he said.
“But the point is, by ‘religion’ the founders were thinking of Christianity,” Fischer continued. “So the purpose was to protect the free exercise of the Christian faith. It wasn’t about protecting anything else.”
“They weren’t providing any cover or shelter for the free exercise of Islam or even Judaism or even atheism. They weren’t saying you can’t do it — I want to be clear on that — they weren’t prohibiting that, they were just saying that is not what we are talking about here.”
Fischer noted that a group of Satanists are seeking to erect a monument at the Oklahoma statehouse. The Satanists say the statehouse cannot erect a Ten Commandments monument but deny religious displays that honor other faiths.
“Here is where the definition of the word religion becomes absolutely critical,” he said. “If by ‘religion’ the founders meant Christianity, then you can ban a monument to Satan because that is not Christianity.”
“But if by ‘religion’ you mean any system of belief, whether it is Christian or not, then you have no way to tell the Satanists you can’t have your monument.”

This is so completely wrong-- if one religion is allowed to erect monuments on public property or government offices but other religions are not, then the state prefers one religion and is limiting or infringing on the freedom of others to practice religion. There is then, no freedom of religion at all.

And even if we buy his premise that since the nation was mostly Christian that the Founders only protected the right of Christians to practice, then the Constitution still doesn't allow the state to prefer one sect of Christianity over another. And that is key too, because not all Christians feel the state must erect monuments to the 10 Commandments or Nativity scenes. And then by the state doing so, it infringes on the free exercise of religion of those Christians. If there's one thing our Founders understood, it's that many of their ancestors had come to the New World to avoid the persecutions of one sect of Christians done by other Christians. So if the Founding Fathers wanted to only protect one religion or sect or raise it above others, THEY WOULD HAVE SPECIFIED IT. They did not. END OF STORY.

Is Bryan Fischer asshole of the day for saying states can outlaw Islam and ban mosques?

Though the claims turned out to be false, Fischer said on his radio program yesterday that under the Constitution as it was originally written, individual states have the freedom and power to declare Islam to be illegal and prohibit Muslims from practicing it or building mosques.

"Angola has made Islam illegal in the country," Fischer said, "and they are dismantling mosques. Mosques are illegal and they are dismantling the mosques that already exist; they're taking them down ... And you ask yourself the question, well, can we do that here? Could we do that in the United States? Could we make Islam illegal, could we prohibit the building of mosques, and the answer is yes!"

http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/fischer-constitution-give-states-right-outlaw-islam

According to Bryan Fischer the states have the right to outlaw religions they don't like, but I'm sure he'd disagree if a state wanted to ban his particularly hateful brand of Christianity and put liberal Methodists in charge.

Asshole of the Day, November 7, 2013: Bryan Fischer

ENDA, or the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, passed the Senate today. And while it is a just law which only seeks to protect people from being fired because they are gay or transgendered, of course there are bigots who fear that it represents an intrusion on their rights to be hateful, awful people. And even though the act will never become law since 5-time Asshole of the Day John Boehner says he won't even bring it to a vote, that hasn't stopped the bigots from shrieking that the sky is falling:

“I’m mystified and deeply disappointed, because there are profound constitutional issues at stake here,” said the American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer. “The entire First Amendment is being put up for auction by this bill and it’s inexcusable that no Republican senators that are willing to stand up and defend the Constitution.”
“I believe they have been intimated into silence by the bullies and bigots of Big Gay,” Fischer added.

There's a lot of crazy packed into these 3 sentences:

  1. He believes that the Constitutional right of freedom of religion means that employers should be able to fire people for being gay.
  2. He thinks his God demands he be mean and hurtful towards gays, and that the Constitution gives him the right to be.
  3. He believes in something called "Big Gay", which is a sinister force corrupting American politics like Big Oil or the Military Industrial Complex.
  4. He thinks people who just want to be treated the same as everyone else and enjoy the same rights and protections that everyone else enjoys are "bullies and bigots".
  5. He thinks the Senate GOP shouldn't just vote against something, but should block it with endless filibusters because he doesn't believe in majority rule when he's not in the majority.

And all this over a bill that will not become law under the current Congress!

So for all this panic over gay people getting the same rights in the workplace that everyone else enjoys, Bryan Fischer, you are the Asshole of the Day.

“The military is being conditioned to use weapons on the American Family Association," Fishcer said during his program "Focal Point."

Asshole of the Day, September 6, 2013: Bryan Fischer

Despite their benevolent sounding name, the American Family Association is not about the family. It's about keeping gays from enjoying the same rights that straight people do. The good news is that they are losing. The bad news is that they just won't go away.

Their spokesman Bryan Fischer spoke on the radio this week to says that gay activists are just like Nazis, with the Jews in this case being nice Christians like him.

“There are some serious pathologies associated with homosexual behavior, the homosexual lifestyle,” Fischer said. “And I've talked about this before with regard to Nazi Germany. We know that the Nazi Party started in a gay bar in Munich. And we know as a matter of historical record that most of the SS, the stormtroopers, that surrounded Hitler and were his enforcers, we know that they were homosexuals. And we know it's because he couldn't get straights to be vicious enough in being his enforcers.”

Then he quickly added “Now, please don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying they're going around beating people up.” So they're like Nazis, but without all the violence and genocide. So what's left, their taste in clothes?

There's a lot in that statement, so let's just review some of the highlights:

  • There are pathologies associated with homosexuality
  • The Nazi party started in a gay bar
  • Most of the Nazis who surrounded Hitler were homosexuals
  • Straight people aren't as vicious as homosexuals

And of course there's no proof of any of this. Well, except for Mr. Fishcer's airtight logic:

  1. Most people agree Nazis are the worst people in modern times
  2. Bryan Fischer is such a bigot that he believes homosexuals are the worst people
  3. THEREFORE, Nazis must have been homosexuals!!!
  4. Case closed

Sorry, Bryan Fischer, all you've proved is that you're a homophobic asshole.

It's Mr. Fischer's second Asshole of the Day trophy. Here's his first. Today certainly won't be his last.
