lOKAY! i don’t know how much this has been talked about here, but it’s something I am seriously excited about. A major problem is that it’s difficult for people to access in-person classes to learn ASL, and that many online resources are unreliable or in the form of dictionaries. Well guess what? Now there is SIGNSCHOOL!

This is still in Beta form, created by a few students from Princeton and RIT – Deaf and hearing. While I haven’t used this myself, I have a close friend who features pretty prominently in the videos used in SignSchool and I have no doubt it is amazing.

There’s a modular curriculum, interactive exercises, learning games, a dictionary, self-assessment reviews, lectures… They went ALL OUT and it is AMAZING. Oh, and did I mention it’s FREE?

What are you waiting for? Go try out SignSchool!

ASL should be taught in schools

Like seriously I think ASL (American sign language) or any type of sign language should be a language choice in school. Just knowing the basics could really help and I think it’s important for hearing (non deaf) people to maybe know a few basic signs. I’ve seen more and more people learning it and I think it’s amazing. It would just be really cool if it was a language choice at schools.

Learning from Deaf people is important. American Sign Language (or whatever sign language you are using) is their language first. Look into schools or Deaf associations (or Deaf schools) in your area to see if they have ASL classes.

If there are none in your area there are great videos by Bill Vicars you can look into as well as CHS ASL. These two are teachers of ASL but this is mostly for vocabulary.

You could also try looking for Deaf run Sign groups in your area. Contact the leader and see if they know of a place where you can learn or if the people there would be happy to mingle with you and help. I would caution with this one, Deaf people like everyone else want to go out and hand fun not sit down and teach. So contact the group ahead of time.

There are a number of books that are available too such as this one, and this. There is an app that can help you learn vocabulary called memerise which you can find in your app store.

I do want to stress that it is always best to learn from the source, a Deaf teacher.

I hope this helped
