hi I just was wondering about like pet names in ASL? Like in different languages like French they have mon petit Chou which is my little cabbage but it's a loving thing to call someone does ASL have anything like that? Sorry if it was confusing !!

Hey @c0mingrightbackhome,

You are asking about ‘pet names’ or terms of endearment, very interesting question. From what I have learned ASL use the same terms of endearment as English in some cases (ex. Babe, Sweetheart, My Love). I have also learned that terms of endearment are usually rapped into the ‘Sign Name’ that a Deaf person give to their friends, family and such. I have been on the end of a few sign names I can’t shake for the life of me and see it as a nick name that any other close friend would use.

Thank you for the question, and I hope helped

(Also I open this up to Deaf people on Tumblr, are there ‘pet names’ that Deaf people use?)

Learning from Deaf people is important. American Sign Language (or whatever sign language you are using) is their language first. Look into schools or Deaf associations (or Deaf schools) in your area to see if they have ASL classes.

If there are none in your area there are great videos by Bill Vicars you can look into as well as CHS ASL. These two are teachers of ASL but this is mostly for vocabulary.

You could also try looking for Deaf run Sign groups in your area. Contact the leader and see if they know of a place where you can learn or if the people there would be happy to mingle with you and help. I would caution with this one, Deaf people like everyone else want to go out and hand fun not sit down and teach. So contact the group ahead of time.

There are a number of books that are available too such as this one, and this. There is an app that can help you learn vocabulary called memerise which you can find in your app store.

I do want to stress that it is always best to learn from the source, a Deaf teacher.

I hope this helped

I'm currently learning sign language due to my impaired hearing and tinnitus and I was wondering if you could find the sign for "tinnitus"?

As far as I can tell from Google and several actual Deaf sources many illnesses don’t have signs you explain them.

Ex. Tinnitus= sign ‘Sick’ then fingerspell T-I-N-N-I-T-U-S. There may be a S.E.E. sign for it but I don’t know it, I think there’s a Danish sign for it but it’s called something different in Danish… sorry off topic.

-Hope this helped,

Mun
