I took this as an opportunity to do Era I ghouls, as they never get love! Plus they are technically the oldest/wisest ghouls of their element and actually REMEMBER a time where angels were more of an active threat. Hope you enjoy!

Era I (The Leader) Ghouls and a newly fallen Angel Reader

Fallen angels are rare but considered a grand occasion in the Ministry. You were recruited so fast to be among the ranks! The Emeritus bloodline always eager for angels that have truly awoken to their full potential. You were nursed back to full health after your fall from Grace. Learning to inhabit a more mortal form without the divine. And many siblings in the Clergy were eager to have you. You were grateful to be welcomed so quickly. But your new home doesn’t come without it’s problems…

You find the hardest transition was with ghouls. Angels and Ghouls being natural enemies with countless battles. So you were discussed with the ghoulish leadership before you had a chance to come near any ghouls. And the council of them had their own opinions.

Alpha: The fire leader is a bit smug at seeing you. Nothing personal, but he likes watching angels get humbled and hope you enjoyed ‘the fall.’ But since you are here, if you pledge yourself to the Emeritus bloodline and prove yourself worthy- why shouldn’t you be allowed to join? Alpha is going to want to test you, of course. He’s going to want to be in charge of all the tests to make sure you are as loyal as you say you are. In the future, he ends up being the most friendly and welcoming to you after you’ve proven yourself.

Omega: Has the hardest time accepting you, believe it or not. Quintessence ghouls have the hardest times when it comes to angels, and are often the first attacked and slaughtered when it comes to battles of the divine. This is because Quintessence is actually the universe’s most shared element in all beings. Accept when angels use it they morph it to be ‘divine’ and when ghouls nurture it it’s lovingly just the ‘Aether’. Angels and Quintessence ghouls are two sides of a coin, and it makes them deadly to each other. Omega has a lot of trouble believing you are truly fallen and not just some sleeper agent ready to wipe out the Ministry. He believes you need to be sacrificed to Lucifer if you truly want to be useful. Nothing personal, but it totally is…

Gamma: Out of all the old ghouls, Gamma is the most reverent of your position. He does not accept you blindly, but knows your presence is a sign of his faith. Angels don’t just magically fall into the Ministry when they are dropped from Grace. He is sure Lucifer brought you to them; whether as a test to YOU or THEM he isn’t quite sure. It’s his insistence that no one make any hasty decisions and consult with the Sigma ghoul…. You are grateful down the line when you realize Gamma’s wisdom and level headed-ness probably saved your life.

Delta: He is openly hostile towards you if you get too close to him, but tolerates your presence otherwise. He was summoned to earth centuries ago to protect both the ruling Papa and the archives of Demonic knowledge. So he’s had to put down a few angels in his time! This is Ministry politics and Delta is only interested in making sure the ghoul population is safe. If you are sincere then you can stay… but he makes it very well known he’ll rip what’s left of your wings off if you harm any ghoul. Like Alpha, he will be satisfied when you under go initiation and complete your tests. He won’t acknowledge you, otherwise.

Air: Though he does not choose to bear the title of Beta Ghoul, he still serves as the oldest Air ghoul. So he was consulted on what to do in regards to you. Air is, in fact, the oldest Ghoul on earth. He’s old enough to remember angels being a non-stop threat to the earlier tribes of Hell. Everyone assumed that, like Omega, he would want you to be sacrificed to the Olde One. But Air surprised everyone by vouching for you… so long as you physically bind your soul to Lucifer. As he explains, a Fallen Angel has been cast out for a reason much like their Infernal Majesty. That is useful to the Ministry and it’s goals so long as you show your trustworthiness and give your soul. If you go ahead and bind yourself Air will not fully trust you but at least feel confident that you pledged yourself sincerely.

SURPRISE SPECIAL: As the leader of all leaders (tm), the Sigma, he was happy to have you!! Lucifer wants you safe and cared for, after all! Special knows for a fact you are going to fit right in. You are EXACTLY what the Ministry needs! Truthfully, you were a little scared of this ghoul and his reputation in Heaven. But Special seems nice enough and shows you around. He has everyone treat you like royalty so you can’t really complain, can you…?

Air Chaperoning a New Ghoul that’s afraid of everyone… But Air

~Ever since Air retired from the band he doesn’t really have that many Ministry duties. Then again, very few clergy members are brave enough to ask the oldest and grumpiest ghoul to do much of anything. He’s happiest stalking around the library and finding small tasks to keep himself busy. But you can only sort the books and help siblings so many times before it becomes a tedious routine. Air, one day, found himself bored.

~Air being asked to help out a new ghoul summon, one da, was a very refreshing request. It was Something he hadn’t done since he adopted his kit, Cirrus. And teaching was something he certainly didn’t undertake since his two protégés Cumulus and Stratus. But when a nervous Bishop INSISTED he help with a new air ghoul, how could he refuse? Air, despite his grumpy nature, is the best qualified for this!

~Air wasn’t sure what to expect when he finally met you… but this wasn’t it. You were the biggest nervous wreck he’d have ever seen. Definitely not from his tribe of stoic and immovable ghouls. You reminded him more like the birds of Earth; easily startled and ready to take flight at any moment. Air was sure that if you had wings you would have already flown out of the window and away from the ministry. Actually, you were trying to claw your way out of one of the windows to freedom. None of the humans or helper ghouls wanted to go near you!

~Ironically, you bolted and hugged the older ghoul the moment you sensed he was there AND an air-kin. And truthfully, you didn’t care that you never met him before! You were summoned so suddenly, pulled from Hell into a new world, and you were surrounded by weird Not Ghouls that you couldn’t understand! Seeing Air was a relief, and you weren’t going to let him go!! You didn’t want these human things around you anymore!!

~Much to the surprise of everyone, Air was able to gently put his arms around you and calm you down. He gave no explanation, just a gruff, “they’re scared.” Before guiding you out of summoning room. No one was going to object to him taking over. Quite frankly, you looked terrified of every ghoul and human you encountered! You refused to move out from behind Air the entire time he grabbed your uniform, got your supplies, and fed you. Later you knew this was you being in shock from the summoning; but you were just so grateful he was patient with you. Even when you were ready to flee every time you encountered someone you didn’t know.

~Even after settling in after a few weeks, you found yourself still very jumpy and nervous. You came from a particularly dangerous area of Hell. One where you never knew if there were sky predators who were ready to gobble you up! So you and your family were used to having to flee in a moments notice. Air seemed to get that, and didn’t judge you for it. In fact, he made you feel safe. Despite not believing him at first that there WERENT any hell beasts on Earth he needed to protect you from! Air would also be lying if he didn’t find it funny you fear-punched Alpha the first time you met him!

~You got to crash in his room the first couple of nights. He refused to share a nest, but was happy to make you up one of your own. Sometimes, you visit and hang out with him as a safe spot to relax.

~Air took a liking to you, even if you were a handful when nervous. He likes getting to show you the new human world and it’s strange ways. Air taught you to take better control of your anxiety… ok, well- he’s currently teaching you slowly! Air helped you start thinking tying to use your fear of the world as a strength and extra source of energy. He himself isn’t social, but he’s teaching you to be less afraid of others.

~You both make a funny sight together, with him being so tall and stoic and you being shorter and constantly hiding behind him or hanging off of his shoulders. He doesn’t seem to mind when you nervously use him like a pole to keep away from anyone you don’t know! Others have often found him quietly sorting book returns in the library while you are on his shoulders, nervous and trying to perch.

~He is slowly introducing you to the other air ghouls in the clergy. You’re still a little afraid of Cirrus and Stratus, but you’ve bonded very closely to Cumulus!!

~Air is happy to be your bodyguard when you need it. He won’t let anyone near you if you don’t want them! He’s scary enough on his own that no one tries to fight him.

Being Best Friends with Air

~Air is a very prickly ghoul and always has been. He's the oldest ghoul in the world, and he's a crotchety old man in ghoul years. That doesn't mean he goes out of his way to be an ass to everyone, but you know he just prefers more solitary to the average person. One of the reasons he likes you is that you accept who he is and don't try to change him with asinine concepts like, "THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP!"

~You're honestly not sure HOW you two became best friends, just that one day you knew he adopted you as his closest companion. Other band ghouls teased and pointed out that you are one of the few beings that can get full sentences from Air without pestering him.

~Air mostly got to know you from the time you volunteered in the main Abbey Library, where he retired to work after the Meliora tour. From his words you were one of the most competent of his staff he's had in decades.

~You slowly built up talking to him and learning his moods and body language. It was a hard and dangerous path to follow to not annoy him, but he came to respect your efforts. You could tell when he was in a mood to actually listen or when he wanted to be left entirely alone. You asked questions only when necessary and didn't try to bore him with small talk.

~Bribing and conditioning the air ghoul with coffee was probably your smartest move. You know it to be one of Air's favorite human drinks and he relied on it to get through the day. It took a lot of tries, but you eventually found his favorite. When he one day asked you WHY you went out of your way to give him perfect coffee you just shrugged. Air appreciated the fact you didn't give a bullshit answer or try to paint yourself as endearing.

~Air won't admit how protective he is of you. He's more of a ghoul who prefers actions over words. So he'll do anything to keep you safe. Whether that's walk you places at night, make sure you eat and drink during the day, or loom over you if anyone is bothering you until they go away.

~You both have very nice talks when it's just the two of you. Air likes having coffee and just having chats about anything you both can think of. He's a big fan of history (human and ghoul), science, and language.

~One of the reasons Air respects you is that you don't treat ghouls like him like unattainable romantic partners. You've treated him respectfully and with courtesy you'd give to anyone in the Ministry.

~Air is one of your closest confidants, and has never broken your trust. The first time you went to him for advice you were surprised on how deep and thoughtful he could be! Air has always provided you with a clear, objective, and logical mind to vent to while being courteous of your emotions. You trust his word.

~Air is not the most emotional ghoul, but he values your companionship. When you both aren't working or doing chores he enjoys walks with you. Preferably on the higher building walk ways or in the gardens AWAY from everyone. Sometimes he will bring a book and you two just silently read in each other's presence.

I think it definitely depends on how you personally write him in your lore! :) 

In the context of my universe, it wouldn’t so much WHEN he was summoned rather than how old he is in general. 

Granted, ghouls summoned fairly recently have not been ‘domesticated; so they would act more ghoulish. BUT, for someone like Air, who is one of the oldest living ghouls in the human world- it’s a different reason! 

Air is what they would call in Hell, one of the few remaining ‘true’ ghouls. Or Ghouls who genetically are related to more of their earlier populations before the genes started getting less demonic. Hell, he is one of the very last air elements to have working WINGS. 

So it’s not surprised that even though he has been around for centuries that he is more ghoulish than his fellows!

These are just my opinions to fit my personal lore and world building! 

HC’s on Summoning Ghouls

1) How Are Ghouls Summoned?

A very complex and often dangerous ritual. It involves Hell based magic and literally reaching through the aether to pull the ghoul’s form and soul from Hell. This can take hours to accomplish, and can be VERY easy to fail. 

2) What relationships do ghouls normally have with their summoners?

It depends on who is summoning them and why. 

Back in the early Clergy days, only those of the bloodline had enough power and right to summon ghouls. So for a while, the ghouls that were summoned were bound only to their master and, consequnetially, members of the bloodline. 

Later one, when the Ministry was expanding and the order growing, others were taught this forbidden art. The main difference being, those not of the bloodline summoned ghouls to bind them to the Clergy- not themselves. 

All Papas are expected to summon at least one ghoul in their lifetime that is specifically bound to them. Consider it a right of passage and a true show that they are worthy enough to wield this forbidden power. Depending on the ghoul, the relationship can be very complicated. Most of the time, the ghoul is very protective and loyal to their Papa if they are treated right. Other times, it’s a resentful agreement between ghoul and summoner. A faithful ghoul has no problem being loyal to their master’s kin and progeny. A resentful ghoul is more likely to be dismissed or pushed to other duties as soon as their summoner passes. 

Other summoners typically do not have a relationship with the ghouls they help bring to Earth. Most ghouls would attack the person on sight out of sheer fear and confusion (as humans are strange and do not reside in Hell.) Others don’t feel any sense of duty to their summoner- as they aren’t bound to them nor do they particularly care. 

3) How commonly are ghouls summoned?

Many ghouls have been around for decades or even centuries, so there isn’t always a need for more. In recent times with Clergy rapid expansion, the summoning rate ended up bringing a handful of new ghouls every year. Which doesn’t sound at all impressive, but it’s actually a lot! New ghouls take a considerable amount of time and resources to properly keep. So to have too many too frequently can cause numerous problems. 

Centuries back that used to be the case, because the ministry needed the protection. But after a certain amount of Ministry growth peaked new ghouls were only needed every other year. The current population of ghouls is very stable and plentiful, thanks to their age and usefulness.  

4) What age are ghouls usually summoned?

Ghouls are typically summoned after their first heat. In human years this means the ghoul is typically about 18-21 years of age. First heat season is when the ghoul is biologically an adult, and can usually withstand both summoning and be useful to the clergy. 

Sometimes there are exceptions to this, depending on the duty of the ghoul or how experiences a summoner is. So ghouls as young as 14 have been taken. Unfortunately, sometimes kits are also grabbed by less than experienced summoners who aren’t strong enough to pull an adult ghoul. 

5) Would Air and Special care if they were summoned by the same person?

Potentially, depending on their circumstances. In my lore, this person would be dead for centuries so at the time it really depends if Air and Special were summoned around the same time! Ghouls summoned in crops tend to stick together out of a strange kinship- kind of like a graduating class of sorts. If Air and Special were both close to their summoner, I can see them bonding over it. Maybe even getting together on the rare occasion to reminisce about them before they passed away.

Air Finding Out Someone He Courted Had a Secret Partner

~The relationship between you two would immediately end. No exceptions. Air has no time for deceit. 

~Air does not mind open relationships or even multiples in a relationship, that’s all fine and dandy. Both in Clergy and Ghoul life, there’s nothing considered odd about such an arrangement. It’s the fact that you weren’t honest from the beginning that you already were married that he has a problem with. 

~If you were married but still fine with him courting and seeing you, as was your spouse, Air would be fine. But you purposely kept that from him and didn’t give him the courtesy of the truth? Air hates feeling like people think he’s stupid and won’t find the truth somehow. This insults him. 

~The only thing that would have saved you is if you broke down and told the truth eventually rather than him finding out on his own. At the very least, you could have saved face and worked with him to repair some semblance of trust. He understands that emotions are complicated. But the fact is that you didn’t. 

~He’s lost all interest in you. Air is too old to play games like this and he is certainly not interested in them now. 

~Won’t HATE you. Will be courteous if need be, but will be cold and not interested in small talk with you or your spouse.

Air Ghoul Headcanons

~One of the oldest ghouls in the Clergy, and one of the strongest. He’s been alive for a very long time and very much acts like a grumpy old man. Air doesn’t really flex his rank on other ghouls, but then again, he doesn’t necessarily have to. There are very few ghouls foolish enough to challenge an elder ghoul. The older he gets the more he wants to have a passive role in leading other ghouls and prefers to just follow what the Clergy asks of him. 

~When he retired from the Ghost band, he shocked everyone by personally nominating the Ghoulettes to be his official predecessors after Chair Ghoul. The ghoulettes are two of the only ghouls who have ever gotten any sort of public recognition from Air- and that’s saying a lot, considering his standards! 

~Air actually has a lot of respect for Papa I and they kept in touch as much as they can professionally. While they had no real semblance of “friendship”, there is a lot of mutual respect and understanding. It was one of the reasons they worked really well together during the Opus era of the Ghost Project. Papa I is one of the few Papas that Air believes is suited for his title. And Air has seen a LOT of Papas come and go. 

~Spends a lot of his time alone or stalking the maze of the libraries. Many don’t know, but Air is well versed in human language and literature. Mastering human written works is a coveted skill among ghouls, as it grants them cozier positions and responsibilities within the Church. Air can read and speak over twenty languages (some dead) without the aid of binding magic. 

~Actually loves music, but he’s just not as vocal about it as some ghouls like Ember or Alpha. When it came to recording, he actually wrote and performed the studio piano for ‘Zenith’. It was one of his few contributions to the Ghost project when it came to writing music. 

~Prefers solitude when he gets the chance. Air has seen so much and has spoken to so many ghouls and humans- he’s just tired. He’s a tired old man ghoul who just wants to relax and not have to worry so much about Clergy affairs. He longs for the day he can go back to Hell... but laughs at himself when he realizes he might actually miss Earth. Would never admit to it. 

~Has been a mentor figures to MANY ghouls, whether he wanted to or not. Despite being closed off and a bit of an ass, he somehow keeps finding ghouls he adopts like lost children. Air has no idea how or why it keeps happening but here he is, being a good guide to the rebellious newly summoned or grown ghouls! Begrudgingly cares about each and every one of them. Two of them being the ghoulettes- who he has come to see like daughters or baby sisters. Again, would never tell them or dare to let them think that. Then he’d never get rid of them!  

~Random HC, but he has one of the deepest ghoul voices when he chooses to speak. When Air speaks ghoulish humans have claimed to feel small vibrations from being too close to him. 

~Broke the record for tallest ghoul in the clergy: Only followed immediately by Cowbell and then Mountain. 

~It’s rumored that he actually had wings at one point, as his tribe in Hell was known for having winged Air ghouls. He won’t confirm or deny this rumor, and often pokes fun at it to get a rise out of curious siblings of sin.

You’re sweet and quiet nature has the heart of one…

The Nameless Ghoul Air!!

He’s normally very reserved and anti-social himself! You’re quiet nature had him enjoying your company first, but it was your lovely heart and want to make others happy that really had him hooked. Air normally isn’t one to try and make connections with many people, but he finds himself admiring you for when you do. There is something noble to him about one that likes to make their loved ones feel valued and special. And you definitely make this stoic ghoul feel more loved than he has in centuries! 

Air absolutely loves that you both can just sit next to each other quietly for hours and not have to say anything. You have VERY similar personalities and habits in that regard! For Air, a relationship is very successful when you both can sit in a room and not even have to use words to connect. But he does love when you crack jokes or show things to make him smile… actually, you’re one of the VERY FEW people (human and ghoul) who has made him laugh. When the rest of the band heard him laugh because of you they thought the world was ending! 

Air knows you are strong, but he finds himself very protective of you. Mostly because he’s not very social and does not like people in his (or your) space. Especially if you are feeling anxious that day. Air wants nothing more than to support you and help you spread your positive energy. So he takes a back seat a lot, and instead, keeps encouraging you to be your best self. To Air, you are a magnificently intelligent and loving soul and he is unblessed to have your light in his life… Also, if you draw him pictures he has them all framed. Woe betide anyone who touches art you’ve gifted him!
