It’s one thing to think you’ve been… violated by someone in full control of their faculties and freedom, but quite another to realize that person wasn’t in complete control over either their circumstances or mind. And it’s yet another thing to realize they were in such pain and terror that they were half mad with it, crying and screaming.

It makes it easier, certainly, to wrap the whole awful memory up in a thick cushion of rationalization and logic and pack it away for now, for while she’s still in the thick of it all. When neither she nor Crowley have any real choice in how they move forward. Not if they both want to stay healthy enough to survive and escape.

OR

Aziraphale is sacrificed by her power-hungry ex to an eldritch tentacle creature he’s imprisoned to do his bidding. But, after an awful first meeting, Aziraphale and Crowley commit to helping one another out as best they can.

———-

Hoooooo boy, it’s another “buckle up, buddy” type fic I’m starting to post. First, some heads up: This is full of potentially triggering content, based on a dark premise, includes tough scenes, and grapples with the emotional fallout of abuse. PLEASE read through all tags thoroughly, and please read responsibly!

On the rape/non-con tag: it only applies to the first chapter, and then things dials back to “extremely dubious consent.” If you need more intel before deciding whether to engage, there’s a spoilery warning in the first chapter end notes, and my DMs are also open!

Second, posting notes: This fic is fully written, and I plan to post a chapter every 2-3 days as I finish up implementing some beta feedback and doing final edits. HUGE thank you to musegnome, Sk3tch, and IsleofSolitude/EmberFaye for their beta help with this fic!

Its finished!!! I’m both so happy for the last chapter and so sad it’s over 😭

Such clever world building and some of the best-written human aziraphale I’ve read.

Definite rec from me

Seconding this fic rec. The premise is so dark but for the most part the fic doesn't feel dark. The interactions and growing relationship between Aziraphale and Crowley are fascinating, intelligently handled (both inside the fic and out, dear lord if every fic protagonist had Aziraphale's level of emotional maturity and awareness fics would all be a lot shorter)...I don't know how to explain. Definitely mind the tags, but this fic is delightful and I loved it. Also, monsterfucking galore.

Hello! I'm a massive fan of yours and I have been following Or Be Nice since chapter 1!

I was wondering, was naming the rubber spider/snake George a tribute to the fic Leave the Light On?

It was!!! Old Vines is not the only fic reference, well spotted.

When I started Or Be Nice -- before I published chapter one, but after I had written a few chapters -- I happened to rearead LTLO, a favorite of mine, and had a sudden panic attack about whether my work was too similar.

I even convened a group DM of a few fellow authors to talk through plot points and make sure it wasn't too close, too unconsciously influenced by LTLO. That meeting was invaluable.

I changed quite a few things before I published -- originally 'Or Be Nice' had a 'You've Got Mail' plot about the phone game Aziraphale plays, a words-with-friendsy thing, but I ditched that completely, along with a few other things I've long forgotten. It took the story in a different direction, which was all for the best.

The characters, the plot, and the beats all wound up very different, but I wouldn't be surprised if LTLO planted the original unconscious fic seed.

And, credit where credit is due, George the spider (and the presence of a rubber snake by some other name) are absolutely a tribute to one of the great unfinished fics of the fandom. Highly recommend if you can handle the unfinishedness.

Crowley looked away, keenly aware of how hot his face was under the mask. “You wanted to dance.”

I did. I... still do.” Aziraphale sighed. “It's just... well, we can't. We can't.”

We're not us tonight, remember? We're them. Anything they can do, we can do.”

Crowley caught sight of the angel's eyes and his inhuman heart began to beat so loudly in his ears he couldn't hear the music anymore. There it was again. That mischief.

I may have an idea,” Aziraphale breathed. He straightened his waistcoat, tugged his cravat a little tighter, and gave an excited little wiggle that sent a jolt of pure electricity along Crowley's spine. He backed away slowly, leaving his cup on the table, and stared at Crowley as though he could see right through the lace panels in the demon's mask and into his eyes.

It's a century for revolution, and Crowley and Aziraphale have been assigned to work in Stockholm, Sweden during the winter. The last masquerade ball of the season presents an ideal opportunity for both wiling and thwarting, but there's more wiling happening that night than what Crowley had planned.

Aaah I'm sorry I've been postponing answering this, I received it just as I was doing promos for my current wip... (nudge nudge) but no time like the present, right? 😅

(Also, I realise now that I have taken the assignment far too seriously and made a full on promo post, all I had to do was make a damn list. Oh well.)

The thing is, I have like... 7? 8? fics on Ao3, so this post is just gonna be a battle royal between them all. Anyway, in no particular order - let's go!

  • Vary my days (9,777 words) Plot: Crowley leaves. Aziraphale is left on his own, not sure what the hell is going on. It's all very sad. Comment: The first fanfiction I ever wrote and the first fiction I ever wrote in English! Gasp! Up until I wrote this one, I thought I would only be able to write in Swedish, because that's what I've been writing up until now. (laughs in hindsight)
  • The Christmas Wedding Scammer (35,506 words) Plot: Crowley is an unemployed florist. One day he gets mixed up with a famous wedding planner, and is offered a wedding to plan. Aziraphale is maid-of-honour at the wedding in question, and shenanigans ensue. Comment: I loved writing this fic. Looooved it. It was so damn chaotic, I just let myself play around. I remember coming up with the wedding scene and thinking to myself, "is this too silly?" and then I thought, "who cares, it's funny." And I stand by that opinion. My only regret is making it too short; I was not finished with wedding/enemies-to-lovers/chaos/unreasonable-self-deprecating narration once the fic was over. Which, uh, made me write this next one.
  • Married at First Sight (146,878 words) Plot: Aziraphale is a participant in the TV-show Married at First Sight, and gets married to Crowley. He is less than pleased to suddenly be followed (and driven) around by a rude goth who won't stop talking, but the show will only last for six weeks, and how much can happen in six weeks, really? Comment: I could probably write another 150K just about my thoughts and feelings on this fic, but I'll just leave it at this: When I was writing this fic, it felt like a never-ending project. The story just went on and on, I was addicted to it. 8 chapters turned into 10 turned into 12 turned into 19, and now I look back at it and I go, "wait, I wrote the entire MAFS fic in 9-10 months??" I don't think I'll ever write anything that quickly ever again. But damn, I had so much fun. Didn't get much right in how the production of the TV show would work, though. Oops.
  • A World I Need to Know (72,946 words) Plot: After giving away the flaming sword in Eden, Aziraphale isn't allowed to visit Earth again. Until he sneaks down and meets Crowley. There's some fluff, some angst, pestilence makes an appearance, fun times all around. (No, seriously, it's kinda angsty) Comment: This is my own personal candy fic! I just freely played around with all of my own favourite tropes. Alas, I think they might not have been anyone else's, readership on this one was a bit lower than I would have hoped. I do have a few personal theories for why, but I'm not going to mention them here, it doesn't matter. I'll just say, I'm still proud of writing this fic, and I'm so happy I did. I can see my own development as a writer throughout, and I learned a lot about my own writing process by working on this fic. So it's still one of my faves.
  • and now desert me (2851 words) Plot: Aziraphale is actually shot in 1941. The first season's 1941, that is. Mark Gatiss shoots him and he discorporates. Crowley's upset. No magic show in sight. Comment: One of my short (and earlier) ones! I remember I was in the midst of writing another fic and then I just started this one on a whim, and it was a lot more fun to write than the fic I was actually working on (which, if I remember correctly, I ended up dropping...? rip) All in all, a satisfying blend (for me, the writer, at least) between angst and humour. Yay<3

And that's five! Thank you so much for this message, I had so much fun putting this together!

Let's give this a shot!

Long Haul (Rated E, 68,162 words) 🚛

Crowley's young, lonely and trying to outrun his past on eighteen wheels. A story of self acceptance and learning how to love, set on the highways and byways of America.

Lunacy (Rated E, 57,077 words) 🌕

When a mining operation on an unstable moon goes off the rails, Aziraphale and Crowley only have each other to depend on. With precious few hours to reach the escape pods and a nightmare lurking in the shadows, you'll probably be glad you didn't read it as a wip.

Echo (Rated E, 51,851 words) ⁉️

This isn't your average coffee shop AU. (It's best to go into this one blind.)

Out There (Part I - Rated E, 18,417 words; Part II - Rated E, 18,204 words) 🛸

I don't even know. It's absurd and goofy and if you like my little Easter Eggs, you'll probably enjoy the sheer number of them that feature in this ridiculous (spicy) two-parter.

Boyfriend Debut (Rated E, 20,045 words) 🍆

Who knew porn stars could be so damn sweet?

Okay so Snae's writing is legitimately amazing. Lunacy is one of the best sci-fi stories I've read and has devastating cliffhangers that make me scream even on the tenth reread (and a happy ending, fear not), Echo has a fast-paced surprising plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat, and Boyfriend Debut is some of the hottest and most satisfying smut I've ever read. Go read everything, you won't be sorry.

Aziraphale hummed a phrase of music under his breath as he worked. "All rainbows, back to the very first, are born from grief and fury. Promise me, they say. Promise that it will never be this bad again."

Weekly fic rec, by yours truly...

Even after all this, you still have time. It's cold, but soon enough, the season will change. We watch the snow fall, the days going by. We share stories, we get warm by the fireplace. There's still time, and there's still your favourite restaurant down the road. There's still your favourite show, there's still the hug from a loved one. There's still everything that makes time worthwhile.

Rated E, ~118k words.

My tags: satisfying, entrancing, hopeful.

Summary

Aziraphale Z. Fell is a rising star of the spiritual literary genre - the next Eat Pray Love guy - and his version of Chicken Soup For the Christian Soul is flying off the shelves. It's not that he's not grateful, but it's one thing to enjoy a career in writing and another completely to be pigeonholed into a specific genre, so much so that you are almost forbidden from writing anything else. So yes, maybe he has a bit of a secret. An outlet for his less... appropriate urges. And yes, if his typical readership got word of the sort of paragraphs he could put out on a particularly inspired night, they might suffer some form of heart attack typical for their age. But all of that is well hidden, and there is absolutely no way anyone would ever find out about his Arrangement with A.J. Crowley - the most debaucherous romantic fiction author of the decade. That is... until they have to pretend to be married to each other.

I love me some long human AU. I love to read these long ones and let myself just fall into the story, see how everything develops, really dedicate some time to it, and immerse myself in this new universe. See the characters that we know so well in a complete different context but still being somewhat the same.

And this one does it so, so well. Crowley and Aziraphale are so true to their characters in this fic, and it's spun in such a way that even though it's a completely different background and situation, it's still so them. It's still the same story. Still the same absurd longing and dancing around that we see, and that's so wonderful! Idk how the author did it, but it's so impressive. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's necessary to be accurate to the characters for a fanfic to be good. I feel like in every fic, they will be different, and that's GOOD. Fandom is a sandbox for us to play in. Nonetheless, I will say it again, this fic is impressive in that sense; their motivations, their story, their situation, the way they talk, how they think... it's very true to them. Besides that, the characters are all so well written. They feel real.

I love how the story is told. You don't get the whole picture at first, you don't understand their whole situation and relationship. You get feed details slowly, in the moments where they are needed, and just by the end you actually are able to sit and see it all. It's so engaging, and makes you understand both points of view. Why and how they endured all this time, all this longing.

Also, the thing about both of them being authors and writing each others books, and meeting through fanfiction? That was so genius. It scratched my brain so well. It's just so fitting, the whole arrangement is so well constructed. Aziraphale’s relationships with Gabriel, church and family is so well described. You can really get his way of thinking, and the choice he and Crowley constantly make to Not Talk About It, the one that makes you want to shove them in a room and make them fucking communicate, is... is totally understanble by the end. I was like, yeah, if I was in this situation I'd probably do the same, even if it makes me mad. I could relate a lot to Aziraphale and understand his thinking (although that may not be a surprise lol).

On that note: the use of the fake marriage trope is so well implemented and fits with the characters in the story in such a way that is uncanny. It really feels like something they'd think it's reasonable to do. This is such a idiotXidiot story it's infuriating in the best fucking away. It's so in sync with both seasons of the show, and it was written before season 2! But don't worry they end up together. It's like the author spun that and actually gave some closure, and made them fucking talk LMAO

Also, this fic deals with some sensitive topics, especially homophobia and its consequences, but it's done in such a sensible manner. Yes, they face some pretty bad shit (especially Aziraphale in the past), but they aren't told in a violent (?) manner? Like, the violence is not romanticised, it's not there for us bawl over. The characters deal with it and are triumphant in the end. They are resilient and strong, and even if they suffer because of homophobia, they get to rebuilt their lives and be happy. They get their good ending, and they win.

The writing in this fic is also incredible. I metaphors are delicious, the way the feelings are described, and how everything develops. It's just such a good read, keeping you on your toes. It's funny, it's sad, it's infuriating (as I said before, in a good way), it's hopeful, it's beautiful, it's hot. It's many things at the same time, but above all, it's satisfying. It makes you go through all those emotions with the characters, but by the end, you get to see them happy, free, and communicating. It's delightful writing. Really. There are some paragraphs that I will be thinking for a long time because they hit HARD.

This fic is like balancing craving and indulgence, like having a bar of chocolate that you just eat a little piece every day, because you want to make it last, only to then notice that you can buy more if you want to. It's like a good, deserved piece of cake that tastes like happiness.

Some lovely, awning-induced 'vavooming' from Chapter 5 of 'Just Up The Stairs', a Valentine's collab I was lucky enough to be part of with my two Actual Angels @ineffabildaddy and @foolishlovers !

This & the 5 other illustrations can be found embedded in the fic itself :)

Content Note: Heads up that Chapter 6 is the only chapter that contains NSFW art, so please proceed with caution if that is not your vibe!

Crowley sat atop the stone, staring out where the horizon met the tops of trees, and where the chalk hills rolled beyond them. An unlit cigarette rolled between his fingers, as if he couldn't decide if he wanted it or not.
When he was close enough, Aziraphale cleared his throat. "Hello," he started, throat going tight at the sound of his own voice amidst the quiet fields and trees. "It's me."
"Hi, angel. He looked back at him, noting the plate, and hesitated a moment before he tapped the spot at his right. "Sit for a minute?"

Sometimes there's moments in stories that just stick in your brain because they're so good. This was one of these moments.

Married at First Sight (T) by @aracloptia - my thoughts/ review/ reaction/ incoherent screaming (with spoilers):

  • autism coded Azi was soo cute and very relatable (thank you for the representation, even if unintentional)
  • loved Crowley cooking for Azi and Azi's happy food moans not being sexualized
  • A: tickety-boo
  • C: *hold up. something's wrong here. my angel isn't happy. how come he isn't happy. gotta do something about it.*
  • me: incoherent screaming
  • Crowley being unemployed🥺
  • hate Gabriel's annoying ass
  • it had me kicking my feet and on the verge of tears
  • fake relationship trope my beloved

some quotes I highlighted:

  • “Calling you pretty. To your face.” “You married me to my face!”
  • the lack of Crowley for him to look at was becoming increasingly annoying
  • solid, fake husband ground
  • Then he stopped to ask himself if he was trying to get over the man or start a fan club.
  • Crowley had gently pushed him up against the wall, kissing him, and kissing him, and words seemed redundant, somehow
  • (They had spent about ten minutes in the flat packing up, and the rest of the time doing… other things.) (Twice.)

in conclusion, you should read this.

Hi! I love your recs so much! Thank you for all the work you put into them! I hope it is okay to request my own? I would love to see a list of your favorite humorous explicit fics starring our ineffable idiots. I prefer non AUs, but if you have an absolute masterpiece, I'll take it no matter what!

Only if you want to, of course! Thank you, again!!

Avatar

hey, that's so sweet, thank you so much!! 💜

of course, here are some of my favourite non AU humorous explicit good omens fics: [you can request more fic recs here.]

i made an excuse (you found another way) by orphan_account (1k) “Angel, the restaurant’s right there.” It was. Crowley gestured to it with a definitive arm wave. The Ritz was at the corner of Piccadilly and Arlington, and they could see the hotel facade as they stepped out of the park. “We can walk there.” “Let’s drive.”

Booty Call by emmagrant01 (2k) “It’s called a ‘butt dial,’ Angel. A ‘booty call’ is something else.”

The Angel Line by FancyTrinkets (2k) The one in which Aziraphale purchases and listens to a pornographic audiobook that just so happens to be narrated by Crowley. Aziraphale cringed and covered his face. This was going to be awful, and also thrilling, and he wasn't sure what he ought to be feeling about it, but there was a definite sense of vicarious shame.

Just a Taste by summerofspock (3k) See, it wasn’t so much the eating. It was the noises. It was the indecent look on Aziraphale’s face. It was the way he licked his fingers and wiggled in his seat. Every little action felt specially created to undo Crowley. And Aziraphale had no idea.

The Rake by CopperBeech (3k) During the long estrangement of the 1800's, Aziraphale practiced a secret hobby – and it wasn’t the gavotte. Crowley finds out in an unexpected way.

For a Good Time, Call by seashadows (3k) Three rings. Four. Seven, and then “Hello?” “Hello, sssssweetheart,” Crowley said. “How would you like my long, slithery tongue up your tight little –“ Then it hit him: he knew that voice. Dear. Fucking. Satan. (Sometime in the depths of the 1990s, Hell tasks Crowley with spreading lust. As usual, he makes as little effort as he can, but gets a heaven of a lot more than he bargained for.)

The One in Which Crowley Discovers Wanking by for_autumn_i_am (5k) It began, like most memorable events in Crowley’s life did, with a bad decision; like most bad decisions, it involved poor impulse control and copious amounts of alcohol. The Antichrist had been born, and he put on lipstick and kitten heels to deal with it, but knew that the clock was ticking, and at times when time was slipping away, it helped to hold onto a bottle of gin.

Fine Dining by iamshame (13k) "There was something else I was going to ask you," Aziraphale continued, unabashed. "Ah… How to put it?" He tapped his hand on his thigh for a moment, and then apparently found inspiration. "Ah! When you're…" Crowley made the mistake of making eye contact with him, and Aziraphale gave him another outrageous wink. "Dining out… What cutlery do you prefer to use?" "I'm sorry?" Crowley said pleasantly, trying his best not to cause anything in the dining room to catch aflame in his frustration. Aziraphale gave him a reproachful stare, as if Crowley were being very stupid. "When you're eating, Crowley. Do you favour the… The knife?" Aziraphale actually glanced conspicuously at his own crotch, and Crowley considered leaving the dining room via the nearest window. "Or the spoon?" Another raised eyebrow. "Or even, let's say, a fork?" "What the fuck is the fork in this situation?" Crowley hissed through gritted teeth. Aziraphale mentions that he'd like to have sex with Crowley. Crowley is completely taken-aback, and very conflicted, and very interested. Aziraphale is also trying to kill him by using elaborate food metaphors to explain the whole subject, which is not helping in the slightest.

Trial & error by fellshish (15k) The Metatron brings in the demon Crowley to stand trial in Heaven. For tempting an angel. Uhhhh. Awkward.

Feast by Ashfae, mostlyjustgoose (15k) Crowley's spent the whole of lockdown asleep. Aziraphale has spent the whole of lockdown baking, cooking, and becoming increasingly frustrated with his solitude. Which eventually leads him to the perfect way to solve all his problems at once… Or, Aziraphale attempts to seduce Crowley with a truly excellent meal, and Crowley is amenable.

One Night In Bangor (And the World's Your Oyster) by Atalan (17k) "All right, I know I'm going to regret asking this," Aziraphale says. "What exactly does this wager entail?" Crowley grins like the cat that not only got the cream but has absconded with the entire cow. He grabs the bottle and swigs straight from it despite Aziraphale's tut of disapproval.  "The pot goes to whichever demon can get an angel into bed by the end of the evening." AKA The Fic That Tumblr Made Me Write. Heaven and Hell share a corporate party once per millennium. This time someone's had the bright idea of issuing a challenge to the demons of Hell. Crowley has no intention of missing the opportunity; Aziraphale's just enough of a bastard to make him work for it.

Ideal Partner by summerofspock (17k) “Would you like to explain why you’re watching pornography? In your bookshop? During business hours?” Aziraphale flaps his hand, typically dismissive of any criticisms of his abysmal business practices. “Did you know I’ve been on this earth for nearly 6 millennia and have never engaged in intercourse before?” Crowley grinds his teeth and feels his cheeks heat. What is he supposed to say to that?

Anything for Science by Magnolia822 (20k) Aziraphale decides he wants to make an Effort, so he watches a lot of porn for science. And when he asks for help with more hands-on experimentation, Crowley is only more than happy to oblige.

The Loophole, or, How to Convince a Demon God Exists in Three Easy Steps by fellshish (24k) Ah, yes. Being an Archangel is going splendidly. Aziraphale accidentally erases God from the Book of Life.

”First formulated in 1997, [32] questions to fall in love is a study by psychologist Dr. Arthur Aron which took place at Stony Brook University, New York. The aim? Speeding up the creation of intimacy between two strangers.” The Cosmopolitan

Okay, fine.

Crowley was 32-Questions-That-Lead-To-Love-ing Aziraphale. Sue him.

He had no expectations, all right? Just, an innocent curiosity.

The Grindr Logo Doesn't Even Have a 'G' In It by indieninja92 (79k) After the Apocalypse, Aziraphale ventures into a new space in the gay milieu - Grindr. There he starts talking to a charming young man who certainly doesn't bear any resemblance at all to a certain long streak of demon, not one bit, no thank you. Meanwhile, Aziraphale and Crowley navigate their friendship after the world failed to end. There is much drinking and silliness, but could it be that there are other feelings lurking underneath?? Of course there are, this is fanfic.

Faith, Derived "Aziraphale knows the dangers of being direct. So, in an attempt to apologize for a past miscalculation, the angel inspires a prominent German scientist into the discovery Crowley had been weaving into human progression for thousands of years. What Aziraphale doesn't know is the true purpose of Crowley's side project, and that the demon had just succeeded the same thing in Cambridge.

In short, calculus is invented simultaneously by two separate scientists at the same time because of two eternally pining Eldritch disasters."
