I’ve been resource gathering for YEARS so now I am going to share my dragons hoard

Floorplanner. Design and furnish a house for you to use for having a consistent background in your comic or anything! Free, you need an account, easy to use, and you can save multiple houses.

Comparing Heights. Input the heights of characters to see what the different is between them. Great for keeping consistency. Free.

Magma. Draw online with friends in real time. Great for practice or hanging out. Free, paid plan available, account preferred.

Smithsonian Open Access. Loads of free images. Free.

SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.

SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.

Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.

Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of “how to draw” videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can’t make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.

Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.

Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.

Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here’s a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.

I can’t stress you enough about how important these exercises are for your drawing hand. You don’t wanna get CTS of Tendonitis and similar stuff that will prevent you from making art or even hold  a pencil.

Okay, this guy is my fucking HERO. I just did these exercises as I watched the video, and already my arms and hands feel better. I have a degenerative tendon disease that prevents my muscles, tendons and ligaments from retaining their elasticity, and so anything that maintains the health of my bendy parts is important.

I URGE YOU. Even if you don’t draw, do these several times a day. Even just sitting at a computer can do serious damage. My dad, who was a rugby player, a carpenter, and now a handyman, suffered from severe carpal tunnel syndrome, simply as a result of sitting at the computer at the end of the day to play a little solitaire. Don’t let it happen to you!

As for Supplies, I recommend starting out cheap, buying Pencils and art paper at dollar tree or 5 below. For digital art, I recommend not starting with a screen art drawing tablet as they are more expensive.

For the Best art Tablet I recommend either Xp-pen, Bamboo or Huion. Some can range from about 40$ to the thousands.

So do with this information as you will but as you can tell there are ways to learn how to become an artist, without breaking the bank. The only thing that might be stopping YOU from using any of these things, is YOU.

I have made time to learn to draw and many artist have too. Either in-between working two jobs or taking care of your family and a job or regular school and chores. YOU just have to take the time or use some time management, it really doesn't take long to practice for like an hour or less. YOU also don't have to do it every day, just once or three times a week is fine.

I have used these pens!  They are, indeed, awesome.  Very good for drawing outlines and then using watercolors over.  One of these, a water brush, and a tiny set of watercolor pans and you have an awesomely portable art kit.  Like so (though that one has a different black brush pen).

yknow i never noticed the sheer rareness of images having ids or alt text on this website until i started adding alt text to my art (and trying to remember to add it to any images i post in general, especially text screenshots) and that makes me kinda sad

I feel like a lot of people just don't know how to do it or are intimidated by the prospect. I was too, actually, and I couldn't find any good guides on how to do it (beyond basic formatting) and most guides boiled down to "just describe what you see and important details!" I really wanted to add alt text bc accessibility is important to me, but I would always get kinda stumped on how to do it.

I want to write a book called “your character dies in the woods” that details all the pitfalls and dangers of being out on the road & in the wild for people without outdoors/wilderness experience bc I cannot keep reading narratives brush over life threatening conditions like nothing is happening.

I just read a book by one of my favorite authors whose plots are essentially airtight, but the MC was walking on a country road on a cold winter night and she was knocked down and fell into a drainage ditch covered in ice, broke through and got covered in icy mud and water.

Then she had a “miserable” 3 more miles to walk to the inn.

Babes she would not MAKE it to that inn.

This book already exists, sort of! Or at least, it’s a biology textbook but I bought it for writing purposes:

at some point, I wanna make a short list of resources frequently used by dlsite games, because a lot of people assume there's more of a baseline quality gap between "eastern" and "western" rpgmaker games than there actually is, and a lot of that comes down to the JP rpgmaker community having established avenues through which to acquire cheap royalty-free assets that specifically match the vibes of rpgs lol

the big one is "you can literally just license a soundtrack from audiostock for under 10k yen and it'll immediately give your work a significantly higher production value than using stock rpgmaker music"

it has a ton of royalty-free music and you can search by a lot of things including general Vibe, with "game" being one of the tags you can filter by and a lot of tracks being specially made to suit RPGs, bishoujo games, etc. there are lyrical songs and sound effects there too.

you can also buy a lot of very cheap packs of royalty-free music and sound effects on DLsite, also often in bundles catering to specific genres of games or sometimes even mimicking specific styles (i.e. i've seen ones specifically meant to evoke final fantasy or tales of mana), and with regular sales and coupons. it's a bit of a step down from audiostock but if you're working with no or very low budget both of these places are still really good options for indie stuff

i was sent this as a retrospring ask but i was writing so much that i didn't want to lose the text. so now it's a long post. anyway the way i got in started with an event that i don't think exists anymore (an agent pitching hashtag on twitter) but the traditional ways still exist and i know enough about them to sketch it out.

but before we talk about actually getting into the industry, do you have a complete outline written that tells potential agents and editors exactly what happens in your story? do you have a sample of 8-10 COMPLETE pages from (the start of) that story ready to go? do you have an idea of where in the market your work fits? middle grade, YA? sci-fi? romance? fantasy? nothing else after this point is worth reading or thinking about until you have those things prepared. go do them and come back.

The finished result! I’m so ridiculously proud and pleased with how it turned out!

This was an ordinary door + 3 pieces of mdf board. I carved and sculpted them with my dremel multitool, inspired by the carvings I saw in Bali, mounted them and then painted and sanded the whole thing in several layers before adding a final tint of gold. 💙

But also, it’s actually not that time consuming? Each of these panels took only a few hours to sketch and carve, I made one/day. And then mounting everything and doing the first layer of paint one day, sanding and second layer another day, and more sanding and final highlights and gold the third day.

I am in fact a very impatient person! If it hadn’t been fast, I could never have done it. 😂

Here’s another door I made; I cut out and carved the whole panel in… one day? Two? It was pretty fast at any rate!

And then I got as far as painting and sanding/distressing the paint in three layers, and adding highlights to 75% of it… and then I got adhd-tired of it and never finished the last few highlights or added gold. XD

It’s still pretty, though!

I realized I never actually shared the finished-finished result, with the door handles mounted!

I bought these two beautiful bronze-green seahorse handles on Bali several years ago (along with several bronze dragonflies of various kinds used as towel hooks and general decorations in the bathroom itself).

We bought a bronze patina lock from a local hardware store to match, and I covered the remaining hole with another lotus carving.

It’s been years, but seeing this door every time I head to take a bath or shower still makes me smile. I love it so much. 🥰
