what is alt style?

Avatar

Excellent question! The short answer is that "alt style" or "alternative fashion" is any style that deviates from the societal norm. Now the longer answer is that, typically, these alternative styles are heavily associated with music genres and/or ideologies. Its a way of letting your values dictate more areas of your life and letting others know your values so that you can form a community with them. For example, some of the most well-known alternative fashion subgenres are punk, goth, emo, scene, and grunge. All of these are huge communities that are heavily connected to their respected music genres as well as some fundamental values that the community holds in common. For example I usually say I'm in the grunge/punk camp because I like the music and I also support things like breaking down rigid gender stereotypes, anti-consumerism, anti-authoritarianism, some tenets of feminism, ignoring arbitrary beauty standards, etc. And as such, my style reflects the alternativeness of the values I hold. Black clothing, big boots, baggy pants, and flannel jackets, are all staples of my style that can act as a form of "rebellion" against the establish, or more accepted, way of dressing myself. Personally, its nothing too dramatic, but its just enough to prove that I can look nice while also not participating in things like "traditional femininity" or corporatism.

Thanks for the ask, I hope that explained it!!!

i think one of the reasons punk means so much to me is that under the spikes and studs and safety pins is the same kid who sobbed violently every time he got in an argument, a kid who cared so much about the people around him that he kept asking questions. kept trying to make sense of things, even when it started to alienate him, because it wasn’t a simple disagreement to him, it was his whole life. something was fundamentally wrong with his brain that made him incapable of understanding the world the way the people around him did, so he was seen as selfish when all he ever wanted was to make everyone happy. and maybe when that kid grew up, he still had questions, and he never stopped trying to understand the world a little better. but he was also going to realize that he was never broken; he was hurt by a system that was. but he wouldn’t stop fighting for change, to make it a hell of a lot better for the other misfits and outcasts who felt like there wasn’t a place for them. he was going to stop caring so much how he was perceived for expressing himself and he was never going to let anyone make him feel like he didn’t belong. ever.

That's one of the most relatable things I've ever read.

Can you explain more about Christian anarchy?

Avatar

Would love to! I'll pull it straight from the Christian Anarchism Wikipedia Article:

"Christian Anarchism is a Christian movement in political theology that claims anarchism is inherent in Christianity and the Gospels. It is grounded in the belief that there is only one source of authority to which Christians are ultimately answerable—the authority of God as embodied in the teachings of Jesus. It therefore rejects the idea that human governments have ultimate authority over human societies. Christian anarchists denounce the state, believing it is violent, deceitful and idolatrous. Christian anarchists hold that the "Kingdom of God" is the proper expression of the relationship between God and humanity. Under the "Kingdom of God", human relationships would be characterized by horizontal organization, servant leadership, and universal compassion—not through the traditional structures of organized religion, which most Christian anarchists consider hierarchical and/or authoritarian structures. Most Christian anarchists are also pacifists who reject war, militarism, and the use of violence."

Here's the link if you want more information!

There's tons of evidence in the Bible that Jesus/God was/is a pacifistic anarchist... Could go on about it for hours.

I am learning that boxes do not make you complete. Placing a title on your life does not prove that you deserve to live it. It will not prove that you belong. You do not belong. Few do. This world is not our home.

Boxes are prisons. Don't be their prisoner.

Defy their expectations. Break free.

There's nothing wrong with you.

They simply fear what they cannot label.

...

You do not have to prove that you deserve to exist. You can simply exist. You deserve life. Do not resent your own breath.

Isn't it funny how the whole concept of the punk rock movement was to escape stereotypes and labels and to promote the inclusivity of all people and the lovely things that make them different?

Yet, in the process... they labeled themselves, afflicted themselves with one of the most crippling stereotypes and became one of the most non inclusive and gatekeeping groups of all time. Most punk rockers spend more time debating what the definition of "punk" is, and kicking those out of the scene who don't fit their own personal definition, than they do actually chasing their own ideals.

And it's sad. I love the punk rock movement in concept... but the reality is very different.

In my studies and observations, I feel that punk was never about fighting for one specific thing. Punk was about radical individuality and accepting yourself the way you are. It was about fighting the system. It was about bonding together over music and fashion and culture so tightly that they could never break us apart. Yes, punk is a political movement, but it's not just about ONE political belief. It wasn't about what you believed but rather HOW you believed it.

The Ramones and the Sex Pistols were both right wing bands. The Clash was left wing. There's videos of punks from the eighties, the OGs, talking about being conservative and fighting for right wing politics. And in actuality, the whole idea was built on Anarchy anyway, not this dividing, ostracizing, black and white mindset that modern day American politics uses to turn us against each other and make us weak.

Are you fighting for what you believe in? Are you out there being bold and raising hell and never compromising or selling out? Fighting for the greater good of humanity, whatever that is to you? That's punk rock to me. Unfortunately, the new generation of punk rockers doesn't see things that way. Which is alright with me, I suppose. The title isn't worth enough to me to argue with my brothers and sisters over it. I'm just here to rock out and throw up the finger at the Man.

I never wanted the labels anyway.

In summary, punk's not dead. Just confused.

There's only two flavors of me:

Gothic, flirtatious gentleman who drinks herbal tea, enjoys late moonlight strolls and types away at their psychological novel...

And egregiously out of pocket punk ass who smells like sweat, mental breakdowns, hopes and dreams; rocks hard and survives solely off of ramen noodles.

Rest assured, both are losing their minds.

Currently.
