Lissa Trevelyan was seated cross-legged in the window seat of her apartment, enjoying the pale light filtering through the gossamer curtains. The little plants hanging from the ceiling, vines and orchids, and colorful succulents (her favorite) hanging in pretty little glass domes, cast varying shadows across the words on her book. Her phone resting next to her on a squat pleated pillow played soft instrumental jazz as she learned about the proper diagrams and proportions for wards.

There was slight pause in the music before her phone began to vibrate, nearly moving itself off the pillow. She put the book facedown, spine spread to mark her spot. She picked up the phone.

[Call from Abelas]

She blinked. Why would Abelas be calling her in the middle of the day? With her thumb, she quickly slid the green icon and cradled the phone to her ear.

“Hello? Lissa here.”

“Miss Trevelyan,” the smooth but insistent tone began, “I wanted to call you once I knew for certain. You should know there’s been an accident.”
