I saw the trailers for season 2 of Prodigal Son and frankly I’m a little nervous that they are going to have Malcolm go dark in his attempt to protect his sister. Like, I am hoping what they are going to do is have Malcolm be tempted by it but in the end, choose to continue to be the better person in his family. To continue to be more like his mother and have a good grasp on humanity and the love for the people around him.
I want to see Ainsley’s descent into darkness. I want to see her come to terms with what she did, accept it, and make that choice to be more like her father. I want to see her become more multi layered where you see her struggle for her love for her family, but in the end she chooses to take the darker path.
I want to see these two siblings against each other in a later season, where the only thread between them is their love for each other. I want to see both of them being swayed because of that love, but in the end, doing what the right thing is to both of them.
I want the end of the show to show Ainsley officially taking Martin’s place as the Surgeon. I want the end of the show to show Malcolm continuing Jessica’s work to help those that can’t help themselves and solving mysteries and bringing people home to their families. I want the very last shot of the show to be Ainsley calmly walking into the same asylum that Martin was held in (Martin would be dead by now in this scenario), and then Malcolm to be walking outside into the sunlight (holding hands with Dani).
Give this to me.
True. I’d be so disappointed if they push him to the darker side-- Malcolm resisted for thirty years! He has a heart of gold and he’s his mother’s son! Endicott pointed it out in the end and I never agreed more. He joined the CIA and the NYPD for god’s sake.
If they make him ‘The Surgeon’s son’ it would be so bad. Like come on, you have one season dedicated to him wanting to not be like his father enough to push himself into finding the girl in the box and it’s just going to end up with him being a lawbreaker (and being an accomplice! Oh no.)
Now, Ainsley though. That would be amazing. That’s the daughter that would [should, in writing] develop the trait. She’s ruthless, cutthroat (ha!) and she would be perfect to have that build up. Yes, I need that strain between her and Malcolm due to love being the only connection because! Yes! She would have the compelling arc to spiral.
It’s too early to say anything yet (let’s see, January) but I swear, it would be disappointing if they make Malcolm be the one to be the bad guy. He’s Jessica’s son, the woman who stayed strong (fell into a bad coping habit but stayed strong and supported the victims), Gil being his parental father figure (who believed that he’s a good kid even if people thought he was otherwise, dang it) , Dani & JT & Edrisa trusting him to be part of the team (despite his tendency to be part of the danger) because he’s actually a good guy-- if they squander those away, it’ll be all for naught.
Ainsley who lied to her brother because she was excited to cover a murder and didn’t want Malcolm to know (for some reason!), Ainsley who tricked her employers and thought interviewing her serial killer father would boost her career, who wanted footage of her fiancée almost dying (for the views), the one that was cold-blooded on TV and the one that did the final blows.
