Love, Hope and Faith

By Rusty Ed Gibson

We live tomorrow the dreams of today Our hopes of the future gives us faith along the way

Love is the river of this wakened state Its never out of time its never too late

It gives us life as it flows through our lives It tears through confusion loneliness and strife

Love cuts a clear path through the test of time You can see where it has been and watch it unwind

Free as a river that you can’t control You can’t even say where it might flow

Hope is a power that cant be taken away It can pull you through even the toughest of days

Hope can keep you going when everything else fails It keeps you company on the loneliest of trails

Faith is ever daring in the face of defeat It can bring you courage that nothing can beat

Faith is never doubting in yourself or your beliefs Holding on to what you know when content is just a dream

Faith can give you strength to face what the future brings Combined with hope and love you only need the three of these

Love is like a River Hope is like a dream Faith is just believing with nothing to be seen

So dream of tomorrow and Love for today Hope with all your heart Let Faith show you the way

Self-Portrait with Palette, Painter and Faun

  • Artist: Florine Stettheimer (American, 1871–1944)
  • Date: c. 1915
  • Medium: Oil on Canvas
  • Location: Avery Library, New York

Description

Florine Stettheimer’s dreamy, theatrical paintings range from surrealistic, symbol-laden scenes to diaristic portrayals of upper-crust lifestyles in the interwar era. Stettheimer is also credited as one of the first women to ever paint a full-scale nude self-portrait; her subversive feminist spirit infuses much of her work. The artist’s loose, liquid brushstrokes and soft, washed-out, Fauvist color palettes add a fantastical dimension to her compositions, which variously feature floral arrangements and vibrant, intricately arranged nature and party scenes viewed from distorted perspectives. Stettheimer, who also wrote poetry and created set designs, became an important member and supporter of New York’s avant-garde: She ran influential salons with her sister, which drew artists including Marcel Duchamp and Georgia O’Keeffe. Her work has sold for six figures at auction and belongs in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Modern Art, among others.

This, Too, Will Pass

By Grace Noll Crowell

This, too, will pass. O heart, say it over and over, Out of your deepest sorrow, out of your deepest grief, No hurt can last forever-- Perhaps tomorrow will bring relief.

This, too, will pass. It will spend itself-- Its fury will die as the wind dies down with the setting sun; Assuaged and calm, you will rest again, Forgetting a thing that is done.

Repeat it again and again, O heart, for your comfort; This, too, will pass as surely as passed before The old forgotten pain, and the other sorrows That once you bore.

As certain as stars at night, or dawn after darkness, Inherent as the lift of the blowing grass, Whatever your despair or your frustration-- This, too, will pass.
