Everyone in the Capitol knows that an invite to President Snow’s Victory Tour Culmination Party is a precious commodity. (In fact, rumor has it that a band of citizens who were trying to counterfeit the ticket were caught by Peacekeepers.)  On the big night, denizens lined the gate of his mansion in the hope of a close-up glance of elite citizens like Haymitch Abernathy, Effie Trinket, Plutarch Heavensbee or Cinna. Some victors chose to enter via Snow’s secret underground tunnel and snubbed the crowd. But Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark took a moment to wave and smile at everyone.

“Katniss, when you’re in the arena," he begins. Then he pauses. He’s scowling in a way that makes me sure I’ve already disappointed him.

"What?" I ask defensively.

“You just remember who the enemy is," Haymitch tells me.

"When they ask, you say you couldn't help yourself. You are so in love with this boy that the thought of not being with him was unthinkable. You'd rather die than not be with him. You understand?"
