Production, Consumption, and Capitalism
Jhou-Yu’s Infinity Archives @ Taipei Fine Arts Museum
The artist’s social desire and longing cannot be fulfilled solely through artistic production in the contemporary capitalist society. This highlights the reality of the constant interweaving of capital and art in life, synonymous with the relationship between the external sign and mental concept represented by the signifier and the signified in semiology respectively. When art becomes a material commodity and works of art become commodities, what exactly is art? In the world of insatiable material desire and the institutionalized art world, the appreciation of art has become increasingly consumerist and ritual-like. (x)
