Ok so first I want to say your really cool and I would like advice from you on shading in drawings, mainly in hair, because I love your art style. Thx 🙂😁

The way I think about hair is very basic and chunky- imagine breaking down in your head where there would be beveled edges and separate layers of hair.

I think of it similarly to fabric, because hair folds and drops shadows depending on the lighting situations. I’m not going to go into how lighting works here, but to break it down really really basically, try imagining hair having a top layer and a bottom one. If light shines from above, the bottom layer will catch shadow.

If you play around where light comes from, you can come up with some interesting looks. (Example, lighting coming from below will catch on layer 2, and there will be shadows on layer 1.) This method works really well for thick hair and cartoon hair, but you can also apply it to thinner hair!

Light catches on where the hair is facing more outward on layer 1, and catches more shadows where it curves inward on layer 2. This is the quick and dirty version of how I think about it, but I hope it helps you!

Tumblr makes it look really low quality, but they’re fine if you click on them~ :)

Tutorial time! Here’s a quick hair tip tutorial for eat-my-shxrts (I’m working on the eyes/facial features one, but since I finished this one I thought I’d post it :) Hope this is helpful, I wish I was better at explaining how I draw XD

I also included a process gif! Featuring some of my faves with varying hairstyles~ :) <3

Attention anyone who needs hairstyle references

I want to introduce all of you to this amazing place called the ukhairdressers style gallery.

It’s basically a massive database full of high-quality images of different hairstyles. I mean, look at all the options in that sidebar (and part of it’s cut off):

In total they have 976 pages of hairstyles with about 17 styles each, that’s about 16592 hairstyles to look at.

Look at all the stuff they’ve got! Long hair:

So if you need help with designing a character or you just want to practice drawing hair, this is a fantastic resource.

hair tutorial?! please :3

HELLO! I’m not too sure on how to make a hair tutorial since i kinda just go the hell out with it (its really inconsistent it hurts lol). But i’ll try my best!

Scalp points is really important. You would want it to look natural, and from there you can control where your front hair goes. There are 3 main points, one in the middle and the other two by your temples.

I usually divides my hair sections into 3: the front, sides, and back. YOU DONT REALLY HAVE TO FOLLOW EVERYTHING THOUGH, JUST DO YOUR THANG. I know, my hair structures doesnt make sense with the points and stuffs lmao. But yeah you got my point.

Examples with different hairstyles:

Note to self: do not attempt curly hair if you’ll just fuck things up

Side view examples:

Girls Hair example:

Girls hair doesnt make sense. Just go crazy and make them fabulous queens.

So yeah, thats all i manage to think of. There are great artists out there who make better tutorials than me lmao. Check out kelpls amazing tutorials, or just look at some fancy kpop artists’ hair for reference their hair are amazing

Natural Black Hair Tutorial! Usually Black hair is excluded in the hair tutorials which I have seen so I have gone through it in depth because it’s really not enough to tell someone simply, “Black hair is really curly, draw it really curly.”

The next part of Black Hair In Depth will feature styles and ideas for designing characters and I will release it around February. If you would like to see certain styles, please shoot me a message!

YES! BOOSTINGGGG FOR MY FOLKS WHO WANNA/NEED TO KNOW HOW

No good with tutorials, but I can offer tips, and a few non-drawn ones:

  • Think of hair as having an overall shape that you can style in almost any manner possible. You can twist it, put it up, curl it, shave it, etc.
  • Hair is pretty weightless, yet its still affected by gravity. Think of it like a curtain, or a sheet thrown over a pole.

Some tips not drawn:

  • There are different kinds of hairlines.
  • Beware random wind: I am guilty of this on many occasions, I draw hair flying all over the place, and sometimes more than one character in which hair is flying in several different directions. Try to keep hair relaxed, unless drawing a windy piece or manga (in which hair has a life of its own).

I probably left a load of things out (I didn’t wanna get too technical with it).

I hope it helps you.

some tips i gave my friend today and additional notes that i was lazy to handwrite:

  • hairline depends on how big someone’s forehead is
  • people have diff hairlines. some have triangle, heart, square shaped ones
  • parting/flow line can start almost anywhere on the scalp
  • if you dont find a parting line not only will the hair look weird, it’ll also make it harder to draw
  • volume is very important bc it gives your character life
  • try not to over-detail hair bc it makes it busier and hard to look at
