i think the neatest little detail despair arc and 2.5 did with komaeda was how they made him want to be friends with kazuichi. like kazuichi makes some offhand comment about how bad things always happen to him when he’s near komaeda (right before the truck vending machine doctor hopper scene) and then combined with komaeda dreaming about being friends w him in 2.5 u can infer that those bad things happen because thats komaedas luck attacking someone komaeda wants to be close with :(
despair arc does this a lot actually its not just kaz. everyone that has even a remote chance of bonding with komaeda gets nerfed by his luck. chisa becomes the first person to tell komaeda he’s worth something and right after she does she gets brainwashed as a sacrifice for saving komaeda (and chiaki). and even during the bombing subplot where komaeda compliments the “laxatives” he took from seiko and she gets real flustered and flattered but then komaedas luck gets her expelled from the school literally right after she expresses any interest in him. seiko had almost no plot relevance during despair arc and yet they still managed to fit in a tiny little detail like that. komaeda doesnt get as much screen time in dr3 as in sdr2 and yet they still manage to communicate the depth of his character like this i think its so cool
