Summary: Expression, for Halt, had always been a tricky thing. He’d never been anywhere near exuberant by nature. And, truth be told, there was nothing growing up that would have encouraged him to be otherwise.
In which Halt makes two promises to himself: one he keeps and the other he cannot.

Broke: Gilan is 12 in TEY, which makes him closer in age to Halt than to Will.
Bespoke: Gilan is at most 8, it's just that the primary source of information on the topic (aka sir David), being an average dad, has only the vaguest idea about his child's age.
Also consider: David, a single father during wartime, could be tempted to bend the truth a little about his son's age if it would allow Gilan to stay with him and the army--rather than leave his child behind and alone in a war-torn fief subjected to constant raiding by Morgarath's troops and Wargals.
Either way would definitely make those vast age discrepancies across the books a little less egregious/noticeable.

omg the sunrise warrior himself!! This was pretty low effort, I was rushing so sorry it's not as polished as I would like lol. I might post a more polished version at some point in the future
Anyway anybody else think about how Horace inadvertently made the whole Sunrise Warrior legend real? The way Flanny described it made it sound like nothing more than a story people liked to share, but by playing out that story, Horace made it real. So what if he wasn't some special 'chosen one', he was a warrior from the east who saved Hibernia in a time of strife. That's it, that's the legend. And that's him. Whether he intended to or not, Horace fulfilled a prophecy of some kind. Anyway I think that's kinda cool
