Birdtober Day 8: Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias).

The Great Blue Heron holds a special place in my heart for being my "spark bird" (a species that inspires you to start birding).

They stare at things, I can relate.

Birdtober 7: Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis).

Sometimes, Cardinals get a funny looking face (temporarily losing their feathers) from molting, parasites, or other factors. I heard it's relatively common.

I live in the US's Pacific Northwest, where there aren't the classic American songbirds like Cardinals or Blue Jays (though there are other lovely jay species). By being unable to see them from home, it's nice to appreciate them using an art form.
