The MiSTing Archive (Text files, various years)

An archive of ~2000 MISTings - MST3K fanfics parodying other fanfics and texts - long-vanished from the internet before reappearing (sans search engine and metadata) and then going offline again. They've all been archived on the Wayback Machine - you can read them here.

Examples to start with: the files starting with 'argon' - the fantasy story The Eye of Argon, years before the lost ending was discovered. And the files starting with 'peanuts' - That's Peanuts to Space, a Doctor Who/Peanuts crossover discovered in the late 80's via C64/C128 online service QLink.

(EDIT: the Wayback's partial archive of the site's original location contains multiple partial lists of MiSTings along with data including descriptions, categories and user scores. You can find a list of partial lists here - don't forget to visit different versions of pages using the timeline. The .txt filenames can be used find them in the big archive linked above. A guide to category codes can be found here.)

Want some more? This page has lots of info and links about the genre, including a guide to MiSTings of Sonic fanfics. And another site, The Pink Boy Buffet, has content not in the big archive. And there's another two Waybacked sites I'll post about over the next couple of days.

Twinkle the Dream Being (Video, 1992-1993)

Ant obscure American-South Korean cartoon, co-created by the company behind Denver the Last Dinosaur and Widget the World Watcher, was mostly lost media until two months before I first discovered it. You can watch a clip of it here, or watch the entire series on YouTube here.

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T - The Lost Original Version (Script/Audio, Dr. Seuss & Roy Rowland, 1953)

Here's the wildly different original shooting script with many deleted scenes and songs, followed by the reshoot's opening.

Here's Negativland's remix of the film's soundtrack, which includes the film's many removed songs.

The images below are from lost scenes.

Potsworth & Co. (ZX Spectrum/Amstrad CPC/C64, 1992)

Based on the obscure partly-lost Hanna Barbera cartoon about kids protecting the world of dreams. Play it in your browser here, and read the manual here as a text file or here as a multi-language PDF.

Tip: C64 controls include numpad 84620 for joystick.

You can watch most of the cartoon on YouTube here.

Virtual Nightclub: A Game About Time (Windows, Thumb Candy, 1997)

An ambitious sci-fi adventure game which became lost media until 2016. You can download it, pre-configured to run on modern versions of WIndows, here, including a comprehensive guide and a very different unfinished beta version.

You can read the Lost Media Wiki article about it here, and read the guide's writer's thoughts on the game here.

HyperPoems (Classic Mac, William H. Dickey, 1988-1990, pub. 2019)

Formerly lost-media electronic poems by an LGBTQ+ author - Volune 2 is sexually explicit, inspired by the SF gay community during the AIDS epidemic. You can play both collections in your browser here. Important info can be found in the descriptions.

IMPORTANT NOTE: These have sound, but the volume will initially be set to zero. After the program has finished automatically loading, press Alt+Q to quit it, then select Control Panels in the Apple Menu in the upper left, then scroll down to and open Sound and turn up the volume. Then close all windows on the emulated desktop, open the second disk icon and open the Volume 1 Title or Volume 2 Title 'stack'.
