Tip: Yes, the ship is supposed to fly around on its own on each level's intro screen; it signifies the game's ready for you to press a key to continue.
Default controls use the numpad with Num Lock on - I suggest you change them to WASD, because you can't change the fire and bomb keys - Alt and Windows (or equivalent) - and you'll want your mouse hand free to click on the game whenever the Start menu opens.
