Funkschau (Magazines, 1927-1983)

You can read this German eletronics magazine here.

Tip: if you can't read German, zoom in a few times to load a higher-quality version of the page, right click the page while the cursor is a hand (not a text-selection cursor), copy it, past it into the Google Images search-by-image function, and click Translate.

Balduin: Run For Fun (DOS, Ego Software, 1994)

An advergame for a German health insurance fund. You can play it in your browser here.

Tip: Press Enter, then press 1 for easy mode or 2 for hard mode. Wait at the title screen for instructions in German. I'll translate: Rapidly press A/S, S/D or D/F to waddle in one of the three lanes, and press Space to jump.

Clonk 1, 2, A.P.E. & 3 (DOS, Matthes Bender, 1994/1995/1996)

It started out as German Scorched Earth/Worms. It became something much, much bigger. You can play them here. Speed troubles? Adjust with F11 & F12 or just download for use with DOSbox at http://clonk.de. You can officially download all eight original Clonk games for DOS and, for 4 onward, modern systems, along with registration codes there. There's also a fan-made remake at www.openclonk.org.

“Ive always wanted to know if the the clonk games are real” -- G.P. Lackey

Soul Crystal (DOS/C64, Avantgardistic Arts, 1992)

Gorgeous German graphic/text adventure hybrid. You can play it here.

Translation info for the determined: Google Translate is your friend. For the former, instead of typing everything by hand, you can paste screenshots into Google Lens and select the Translate option. It works better with screenshots taken in fullscreen mode (click the button above the speaker icon; go back with Esc) and seems to have trouble with the C64 version's intro.

C64 info: Use numpad 84620 for joystick - use it to select joystick controls when it lets you use the fake Amiga (open the 'drawer'; don't pick Install). Ignore the title; all disks are included. Disk-swapping instructions are in the description. When it wants a disk, select the second (Disk 1 Side B). The disk list is scrollable, which threw me off at first.

Dr. Drago's Madcap Chase (Windows, Blue Byte Software, 1995)

Get your motor running faster than a cannonball across a mad, mad, mad, mad world for prize money that could put you at the head of the rat race! But if you're in last place when the first player crosses the finish line, watch out for Dr. Drago - he's dastardly!

Get it pre-configured to run on modern versions of Windows here (in English) or here (in German).

The Game of Robot series (DOS, TOM Productions, 1986-1993)

A variation of the game commonly known as Daleks. Trick robots into blundering into traps. You can play the whole series in your browser here.

Tip: If blocked by an obstacle, a robot will move randomly. If the obstacle’s a trap, it may move into it. Robots are traps to each other.
