Despair (Classic Mac, Lloyd Burchill, 1992/1997/1999)

The game/toy that answers the question: what's it like to be a jealous god? You can download version 1.6 from here as Despair.sit, and run it on modern systems via these instructions:

  1. Run this Infinite Mac in-browser emulator.
  2. Drag Despair.sit onto the emulated desktop.
  3. Open The Outside World, then Downloads, and open the file you find these.
  4. If nothing appears afterward, close and re-open Downloads.
  5. Run the game.

Fun fact: one of the spawnable items is a 'cziltang brone', or osmosis generator, a device enabling movement through solid matter from Larry Niven's Ringworld books.

Grizzly (Classic Mac, Adam Winiecki, 1995)

You can download Grizzly 1.3.1 here or here (click SHOW ALL under DOWNLOAD OPTIONS; don't download the version starting with ._ as it is empty), and run it by following these instructions:

  1. Open this Infinite Mac in-browser emulator.
  2. Drag the .sit file onto the emulated desktop.
  3. Open The Outside World, then Downloads, then open the file you'll find.
  4. Open the folder that appears and run Grizzly. (If no folder appears, close and reopen the Downloads folder.)

Natsuyasumi - kogane no kabutomushi o sagashite aka Summer Vacation - Search for the Golden Beetle (Classic Mac, 1991)

You can download it at Natsuyasumi.sit here; you can find the game's Japanese manual (and an alternate download for the game if the Internet Archive is still down) here. Important instructions below. I believe in you!

Instructions:

  1. Drag the .sit file onto the emulated Japanese Mac desktop here.
  2. Open the Outside World, then Downloads, then open the file you find and wait for it to be decompressed; then close Downloads and open it again.
  3. Open the folder you'll find. Drag the six files in there onto Macintosh HD (they'll be copied). Open Macintosh HD if you haven't already; scroll and/or resize it if necessary.
  4. Open Infinite HD, then Utilities, then Disc Copy (set language to English the first time to make things easier), then drag each of the six files from Macintosh HD onto it (since just double-clicking them won't work). A disk will appear on the desktop for each one.
  5. Make a new folder in Macintosh HD (using the first item under the first non-Apple-logo menu) and name it anything or just leave the name there.
  6. Open each of the six disks that appeared on the desktop; each will contain a single file. Drag each resulting file into the new folder you made (again, they'll be copied), then open the folder (scrolling/resizing as necessary) and run 'Natu key'. Click the white words to begin; you can click the NORMAL turtle first to switch to EASY mode.
  7. If you can't read Japanese, use Google Lens, or on a PC browser, use Google Images via the 'Search by image' icon, and paste a screenshot (though you'll probably need to crop it down to just the text in Paint or similar first), then click Translate.

Carotto (Classic Mac, Luc De Bois/Tricky Soft, 1993)

You can download it here as Carotto_1.0.4_0.sit, and run it on modern systems by running the in-browser emulator here, dragging the file onto the emulated desktop, opening The Outside World and then Downloads, opening the file you find, then opening the folder that appears and running the game.

Meat Gone Bad (Classic Mac, Michael Weyandt, ~1994)

You can download it here as meat_gone_bad_f.zip, but don't open it. Instead, drag the .zip file onto the emulated desktop here, then open The Outside World, then Downloads, and open the folder you find, then use the scrollbars to find the game folder.

Quantum Leap Game Collection (Classic Mac, collected in 1994)

You can download the ISO here; run it by dragging it onto an Infinite Mac emulated in-browser desktop such as this one or, for Powermac/PPC games that otherwise bring up type -192 errors, this one.

Tip: some games, such as Unnkulian Adventure 1 and 2 under Adventure, will not work correctly unless dragged onto the desktop to copy them there.

Tass Times in Tonetown (Apple II/Apple IIgs/C64/DOS (actually PC Booter)/Classic Mac, Interplay, 1986)

You can play it in your browser here.

To play the Apple II version, download the two .dsk ('STORAGE MEDIA IMAGE' files from here and here and use them with the alternate in-browser emulator here.

You can read the newspaper 'feelie' that came with the game here.

The Fool's Errand (In-browser, Classic Mac/DOS, Cliff Johnson & Synergistic Software, 1987/1989)

You can play it in your browser here.

Tips: the Mac's version's cursor will move faster than your Windows one - if it looks like it's acting weird, it's because the emulated Mac is loading. The DOS version's copy protection seems to have been disabled. You can view the DOS version's prologue but selecting the Quit option, then typing 'prologue' (without quotes). You can read the Mac version's manual here.

Prince of Destruction (Classic Mac, Andrew Barry/BadgerCom Software, 1995)

You can play it in your browser by following these instructions:

  1. Run this in-browser emulator.

2. Download Prince_Of_Destruction.sit from here.

3. Drag the file onto the emulated desktop, then open The Outside World, then Downloads, and drag the file you find there onto Macintosh HD.

4. Open Macintosh HD, open the file you moved there, then when it's finished decompressing, open the Prince of Darkness folder that appears.

5. To get a better look at the files, either click-and-drag from within the new window to the upper right, or select 'by Date' under the View menu. Open Prince of Darkness.

6. Under Name, type Free License, and under Registration, type 44G66FCD20F5C0ED, then click Register Now.

Tip: Full instructions are included. Mouseover the Apple logo in the flower left, then click Full Screen when it appears to avoid keypress conflicts with your browser and/or OS - exit fullscreen with Esc. The engine's long-lost scenario builder tool can be found here.

Most of Mark Pilgrim's Games (Classic Mac, Mark Pilgrim, 1993-1995)

You can play them in your browser here.

Includes Kant Generator Pro, a programmable random-text generator similar to modern counterparts Tracery and Perchance.

You can find my post about his other game Hot Spot here.

Hot Spot (Classic Mac, Mark Pilgrim, 1995)

You can download Hot_Spot.SIT here, and run it in your browser by following this instructions:

  1. Rename the file by changing .SIT to .sit.
  2. Drag it onto the emulated browser window here.
  3. Open The Outside World, then Downloads, and open the file you find there.
  4. Close Downloads, then open it again, and run the Hot Spot icon that should now be there.

Greebles (Classic Mac, Peter N. Lewis/Stairways Software, 1997)

You can download Greebles 1.0.sit here (ignore the similarly-named file starting with a period and an underscore). You can play it in your browser by following these instructions:

  1. Drag the file onto the emulated Mac OS 7.6 desktop here.
  2. Open The Outside World, then Downloads, and double-click the .sit file there.
  3. Open the folder that appears (close and reoption the Downloads folder if it doesn't), and run the game.
  4. Register using the username Greebles and one of the codesl isted in the 'Serial Numbers' file in the same folder as the game. One of the sticky notes on the emulated desktop mentions how to play networked multiplayer Mac games - each player will need to use a different code.

Tip: read the Documentation. Pushed blocks tend to bounce back and potentially kill the player, but won't bounce if they hit an enemy or opposing player.

Snavely! v1.0.5 (Classic Mac, Karl Bunker, 1995)

It's like Snake except you control two of then; it's like Tron except you WANT them to cross over each other.

You can download it here, along with eariler versions (ignore the identically-named files starting with ._), and you can play it in your browser by following these instructions:

  1. Drag the file Snavely 1.0.5.sit onto the emulated desktop here.

2. Open The Outside World, then Downloads, and double-click the .sit file there.

3. Close the Downloads folder, re-open it, then open the installer program that appears and click Install, then click below the selected file and click Install into "Macintosh HD". Click Quit when it's done.

4. Macintosh HD will open on its own. Open the Snavely folder, then run the game. Register with the name KIRI/ANGEL and the code 1465834785.

Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles Adventure Game (Windows 3.1/Classic Mac, 1995)

You can view the boxart here, and follow these ‘fun’ instructions (none of which are the fault of Infinite Mac’s developer) to play it:

  1. Download it from here.
  2. Drag the file onto the emulated Mac desktop here.
  3. Open The Outside World, then Downloads, where you’ll find the file.
  4. Double-click it. Be patient - an emulated CPU is doing the decompressing here. You can use another tab during this part - it won’t pause the emulation.
  5. You should see a new folder containing a .toast file. (If you don't, close and re-open the Downloads folder.)
  6. Drag the .toast file into the Uploads folder in The Outside World, then wait. After a much shorter wait than last time, it will be suddenly downloaded by your browser, in a .zip file.
  7. Extract the .toast file from the .zip file, then drag it onto the emulated desktop.
  8. A new icon should appear on the desktop - open it, then run the installer. After the emulated system restarts, drag the .toast file onto the dekstop again, then open Macintosh HD and run the game from the new Martian folder in there.

Koji the Frog (Classic Mac, Marco Carra/Slimyfrog Software, 1995)

You can download Koji_the_Frog.SIT here.

To run it on modern systems, change the end of the filename to .sit (lowercase), drag it onto the emulated desktop here, then open The Outside World, then Downloads, then Koji the Frog and run the game.

To unlock the full version, use the name nowhereman and the code NCBPOXKFL.

You can read an article from @obscuritory about it here.
