Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (Windows/Classic Mac, 1996)

Featuring a narrated version by Ray Charles, and a very catchy musical version.

You can download it here or alternatively here, and you can run it on modern systems by following the instructions below the images.

This game was mentioned in a recent review for the excellent game Cape Hideous.

  1. Download the .bin and .cue files from the first link. (If you download it from the second link, the process will be longer, see the lettered instructions below to find out how to get the .bin and .cue files from it.)
  2. Open this in-browser emulator and, when it's finished starting up, drag the .bin file onto the emulated desktop.
  3. Open 'Chicka Installer' in the window that appears and install the game. The emulated system will be restarted afterwards.
  4. When the startup process is complete again, drag the .bin file onto the emulated desktop again. This time, open 'Chicka Chicka Boom Boom'.

A. If you downloaded the .sit file: do the following to get the .bin and .cue files out of it: first, drag it onto the emulated desktop.

B. Open The Outside World, then Downloads, and open the file you'll find there. Be patient while it's contents are extracted. If nothing appears afterwards, close and reopen Downloads.

C. Find the .bin and .cue files, and drag them into the Uploads folder that's in The Outside World. Wait until your browser suddenly downloads them all at once. (The .bin file fill take longer because it's bigger.) You can now use these files with the numbered instructions.

BMUG PD-ROM I + II (Classic Mac, various developers, 1988/1990)

You can play them in your browser here and here. Be patient with the large downloads. For a slightly smaller download, you can run a collection of all the HyperCard programs ('stacks') from both volumes here.

You can down both volumes and later ones, all for use with the Infinite Mac in-browser emulators, here (more can be found via the page numbers at the bottom).

The Encyclopedia of Clamps (Windows/Classic Mac, De-Lux'o, 1997)

A typical example of the 90's multimedia CD-ROM infotainment genre, and definitely not the Frog Fractions of the 90's. To run it on modern systems, follow these instructions:

  1. Download CLAMPS.ISO from here (or encyc_of_clamps.zip from here). If you downloaded the .zip, extract it.
  2. Open this in-browser emulator and drag the .ISO file onto it.
  3. Open the icon that appears, then run the program. When it starts, click the logo to properly begin.

Through the Looking Glass (Classic Mac, Steve Capps, 1984)

The first commercial Mac game ever developed, and the only game ever published by Apple. You can play it on modern systems by following these instructions:

  1. Download throughthelookingglass_dsk.zip from here or here.

2. Run this in-browser emulator. It'll emulate the very first operating system and the very first Mac model.

3. Extract the zip file and drag Through the Looking Glass.dsk onto the emulated desktop, then open the game in the window that will automatically open.

Tips: click to move. When the game begins, click one of the chess pieces that moves to the front of the board; Alice will have its movement abilities (as a pawn, she can be promoted to queen by moving to the end of the board). If she's captured, she'll lose points and reappear.

The Adventures of Pinocchio (Classic Mac, Multi Dimensional Communications, 1992)

To download and run it on modern systems, follow these instructions:

  1. Download Pinocchio.img_.sit from here or here.

2. Run this in-browser emulator.

3. Drag the downloaded file onto the emulated desktop, then open The Outside World, then Downloads, and open the file you find there. Be patient while it's extracted (it'll keep going if you open another tab). Afterward, there should be an error message read by a synthesized voice; ignore it and close the message box. Then close and open Downloads and scroll to the bottom.

4. Drag the new file you'll find there onto the Uploads folder that's in The Outside World, then wait for your browser to download the new file all at once.

5. Close the tab or window to make sure the emulator is unloaded, then open this other in-browser emulator. Dragon the newly downloaded file onto the emulator desktop, open the icon that appears, and run the program.

You can find my post about King Arthur's Magic Castle from the same publisher here.

The Oxyd Series (Classic Mac, Dongleware, 1992/1995/1993/1996)

They can all be found in these collections, but it's easier to get them (and hteir manuals) from these links, in order of their original versions' release: Oxyd, Per.Oxyd, Oxyd Magnum, Oxyd Extra. For each, you'll want the first file listed. For the first game, getting the last file as well is convenient for reasons given in the description; it renders the first game's .sit.txt file obsolete. For the second game's .sit.txt file, see step 4.5 in the instructions below

You can run the games on modern systems by following the instructions below. I believe in you!

  1. Open this in-browser emulator.
  2. Drag your chosen .sit file onto the emulated desktop.
  3. Open The Outside World, then Downloads, and drag the file you'll find there onto Infinite HD.
  4. Open Infinite HD, then double-click the file you copied to it and wait for it to decompress. If no new file or folder appears afterward, close and re-open Infinite HD.

4.5. If the file was a .txt.sit file, open The Outside World, then Uploads, and drag the resulting .txt file to it; your web browser should then download it as a .zip file containing the .txt file.

5. If it was just a .sit file, a folder will have appeared containing the game (or a couple of replacement files if it was the convenient download for the first game). IMPORTANT: before running any Oxyd game, mouseover the Apple icon in the lower left, then click Settings when it appears and turn both 'Swap Control and Command Keys' and 'Use relative mouse movements' on. In the games, the ⌘ symbol indicates the Command key, which will now be mapped to Ctrl. The mouse thing is super important; the games won't work right without it. (When that setting is turned on, you'll have to click - the emulated desktop to capture the mouse cursor and make it work right - right-clicking is preferable, and pressing Esc will free it. Your browser will remember it, and it may cause slightly odd behaviors on the emulated desktop, so turn it off when not playing an Oxyd game.)

TIPS: There's lots of instructions in-game as well as in the manuals. You can turn a mirror-block's mirror without moving the block. Per.Oxyd has a mode where you can play the two-player campaign as a single player - you'll be given an item you can use to switch between characters.

If that's not enough, there's also Enigma, the ridiculously massive fangame for modern systems. You can read an article about it here (and it's not even about the latest version).

The Castle (Classic Mac, Blue Line Studios, 1998)

You can download and run the CD-ROM adventure game, from the end of the era when CD-ROMs caused creativity to run rampant, by following these instructions:

  1. Download the_castle_v110.zip from here or here. (If you want to try it before committing to a bigger download, the second link also has a demo version, which is also here. Unzip it.
  2. Open this in-browser emulator and, when it's finished starting up, drag the .iso file found in the .zip onto it to insert the virtual CD-ROM.
  3. Open Infinite HD and create a new folder it it. Drag THE CASTLE from the CD's folder into it, then scroll down the CD''s window and drag 'The castle DATA' onto it too; it's a folder, and a big one, so be patient.
  4. When that's finished, open THE CASTLE in the new folder.

TIP 1: Mouseover the Apple on the lower left, then click 'Settings' when it appears, then turn on Swap Control and Command Keys'. Then, Ctrl+Space will show and hide the menu bar in-game.

TIP 2: To keep a save file between sessions, quit the game, then drag it into Saved HD.

Despair (Classic Mac, Lloyd Burchill, 1992/1997/1999)

The game/toy that answers the question: what's it like to be a jealous god? You can download version 1.6 from here as Despair.sit, and run it on modern systems via these instructions:

  1. Run this Infinite Mac in-browser emulator.
  2. Drag Despair.sit onto the emulated desktop.
  3. Open The Outside World, then Downloads, and open the file you find these.
  4. If nothing appears afterward, close and re-open Downloads.
  5. Run the game.

Fun fact: one of the spawnable items is a 'cziltang brone', or osmosis generator, a device enabling movement through solid matter from Larry Niven's Ringworld books.
