Hello, I’m Ren! I work for a game studio (game writing and QA stuff), I wear lolita fashion, I sing in a barbershop chorus. Etc. But I’m just here to talk about fanfiction and Jack Jeanne, which is what I write fanfiction for. And my beloved favorite character from Jack Jeanne, Tanakamigi Chui. He and Kisa are unintentionally soulmate-coded and I need them to kiss and snuggle.

just an informal list of reasons to love Tanakamigi Chui
this is not my full essay but it's a quick list of reasons off the top of my head from someone who asked me on reddit
- canonically the most “honest and straightforward” character in the game (Neji’s words, and they do hold true) I can’t stand being lied to, even about small things, and I don’t want Kisa to be lied to either. Chui does never and will never lie to her. He’ll straight up tell Kisa things that he’s definitely supposed to be keeping secret. He’s so honest, it’s actively uncomfortable for other people. He’s not trying to be mean, he’s not trying to be ‘brutally honest’, he’s just awkwardly honest and it’s cute and good and I love him for it. Man who doesn’t lie? So hot.
- this is a man who will admit when he’s wrong. UNPROMPTED. do you all realize how rare this actually is? Nobody is expecting him to do this. It doesn't benefit him to do it. He just does it because he thinks it's the right thing to do. I feel like everybody expects him to be such a huge egotistical douche (especially after his little speech about how he feels nothing from Quartz's performances--and then it turns out that wasn't him being a dick, he apparently just sincerely feels that way) and then he will repeatedly UNPROMPTED come up to the members of Quartz to be like, “hey so I was wrong about x thing and I really learned a lot from watching you guys” and honestly this is so rare and not a thing guys tend to do in real life that this alone was enough to capture my heart. Seriously, first time I saw his reaction after the fall performance, I was like, "oh no it's over for me" A man who admits when he’s wrong!! Oh my god, he and Kisa would have such a healthy relationship between that and the not-lying thing. No mind games from this guy. Fuckin love to see it.
- comes out swinging when it comes to defending Kisa There aren’t many scenes in the game where we have the opportunity to see how he reacts when he feels like Kisa is being insulted because it just doesn’t happen in front of him that often, but WHEN IT DOES oh man, he employs a few well-chosen words of COMPLETE AND UTTER OBLITERATION. You ain’t gonna insult the transparent vessel like that in front of Tanakamigi Chui, hell no! Even when it’s only that he feels like Amber’s win against Quartz wasn’t justified (try getting second place in the fall performance sometime lol, it's EXTREMELY worth it imo), he completely eviscerates his underclassmen over it. That's how you know he really cares about making sure the record is kept straight, because apparently there are only two things that matter to Tanakamigi Chui: Art, and Truth.

I made a whole spreadsheet for my niche fandom rare pair 80-chapter-long fanfic to help the approximately 20 people who read it avoid spoilers and content they may not want to see. I think I've hit my peak of 'fanfic nerd bullshit nobody asked for'.
Completed illustration for the update that goes out today for my MigiKisa slow burn. <3 Pencil and inking were done traditionally, screentone and typesetting were done digitally.
We're now 3 chapters/7k+ words in on my currently 80k+ word TanakamigixKisa fanfic so I thought maybe I should idk link it here or something. They didn't give us a proper Chui route so I wrote this. Like the in-game routes, it follows the canon timeline until Christmas (which is currently about 40k words in) but until that point is written from mostly Chui's perspective, with the occasional dose of Kamiya's perspective. I also wrote this because I wanted to rewrite all of Chui's common route scenes from his perspective to make them make complete sense. Because it seemed like a fun challenge.

there is an alternate universe out there where neji never left amber and kisa was placed in amber instead of quartz and neji casts her as the al jeanne for I Am Death and chui-kisa-neji becomes THE terrifying trio of horror/tragedy plays.
they're stuck in a feedback loop of "I need a mirror, someone to reflect back the monster and the human in me" > "I steal from other people to grow so I'm willing to be your mirror for that cause" > "you two are fascinating and I'm gonna break you down so bad and make something new out of you" > "I love suffering for the Art™" > "I need a mirror..."

the neji we have now who grew as a person because he transferred to quartz is all well and good, but thinking about amber!neji who never left and is pretty much directing a cult for the funsies and the drama and the Art™ is lighting up my brain like a christmas tree
plus like. him as the original takihime training kisa to be the new, better takihime, but in that terrible way of directing that he's been trying to unlearn when he moved to quartz. like the way he was ruthless with everyone during the winter performance and making pointedly mean casting choices and treating actors as objects
utsuri joined univeil with the goal of being chui's al jeanne because he's a fan, and momonashi is... yeah. but imagine if momonashi also joined univeil because he's a fan of neji, or how neji brings out other sides of chui
just. amber!neji. it would be so bad for his mental health probably, but it would also be interesting to see
