Once, Amal Ashour @amalashuor lived happy life with her family. Amal had a home to live in with her husband and her baby daughter Maryam. She was studying to get a master's degree in the French language.

However, Amal and her husband and daughter were forced to flee their home when the war in Gaza began. Amal's daughter, Maryam, is only a toddler, but instead of being able to play and explore the world, she is forced to grow up during a genocide.

Amal started her fundraiser with the goal of evacuating. However, with the crossing closed, and necessities like food and shelter being extremely expensive, she has been forced to use these funds just to keep herself and her family alive.

As well as this, instead of just focusing on her own wellbeing, she has drawn attention to the campaign of her friends and family. She has also chosen to use the funds of her own campaign to support over 20 extended family members, rather than just herself, her husband and daughter.

Amal shouldn't have to do anything to earn your support (no one living through a genocide should have to earn it.) But if you want some reason to help her, Amal and her family are more than worthy of your aid. Amal is a very intelligent and kind woman. She has worked to bring attention to the campaigns of others, not just her own. She knows several different languages, and she has even written thoughtful and insightful posts in English on Palestinian liberation.

Recently, donations have slowed down Amal, but she still needs your help to feed and care for her family! This fund supports 20 people, all of whom need things like food and shelter from the increasingly cold weather. Please, support Amal however you can. Share and donate, do whatever you can to help!

Another fundraiser you should give your attention is this fundraiser brought to me by Safaa Al-Khatib.

She discusses her story in more detail on her tumblr, @safaakhateeb, which you should follow and support.

Safaa is a photographer from Gaza, whose life was brought to a standstill by the war. She has two daughters and a husband, Muhammad Al-Thalathiini, who is a photojournalist. Ever since the start of the war, they have lost everything they own, and have been forced to stay on the run, evading the ruthless aggression by the Israeli military.

Safaa wants to get her family out of Gaza and make sure that her daughters have a normal childhood and a brighter future. She also wants to ensure that her mother, who is unfortunately ill, can receive proper treatment. In their current conditions, food is hard to come by, and clean water and sanitation is extremely scarce, which can make her mother's illness worse. Not to mention an extreme scarcity of medical resources after Israel has destroyed all health infrastructure in Gaza.

(ID in ALT)

You can support Safaa and her family, by following her on tumblr, sharing her posts where she discusses her family's situation, and by donating to her fundraiser if you can. If you cannot donate, it's so important to keep sharing!

I'm the second option. I don't mind sharing details about myself. In fact, I can tell you a few things! I'm 29 years old. My birthday is on January 27th, and I live in Toronto, the unceded territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples. I also like mint chocolate, I'm obsessed with fruits like apples and mangoes, and I like to watch indie films about the human condition

Now you have a general idea about who I am and what I like. Will I tell you more? No, because it is my right to keep information about me private. But this is not the case for the people from Ghazzah. They have to reveal every bit of their life to show foreigners, especially from the West, that they are from Palestine and they are surviving an accelerated genocide. It doesn't matter if they are verified. So you see paragraphs about their experiences, photos, videos, and testimonies from their friends who are supporting them.

But, for some reason, this is not enough.

My good friend, Mohammed Iwais (@mohdiwais) is the perfect example of this. He has shown everyone everything. And I mean everything. Go to his blog. Look at it. There are photos, posts, and videos about his current situation.

One post that gets me the most is about his sister's injury. She has been shot in the thigh by a fucking QUADCOPTER. Mohammed has no choice but to document the whole thing. He has to show X-rays, the bullet, and the blood on the bandages. All so people can empathize with him and lend their support.

Yet, it doesn't seem to get any better for him.

Donations have been awfully slow. He would receive one after many hours, and it would be mere pennies since people don't pay attention to the currency exchange! There are so many 5 and 10 SEK donations if you look into his fundraiser! Mohammed and his 27 family members do not deserve this!

So please donate and share. Mohammed is the sole breadwinner in his family. Many of them are his young nieces and nephews. They are children who are starving and sleeping on the streets!

And don't forget about the currency exchange! It is set in Swedish Krona. $10 USD = 103 SEK. There is also PayPal available, so you can literally give $1!

If you're feeling anxious or depressed about the climate and want to do something to help right now, from your bed, for free...

Start helping with citizen science projects

What's a citizen science project? Basically, it's crowdsourced science. In this case, crowdsourced climate science, that you can help with!

You don't need qualifications or any training besides the slideshow at the start of a project. There are a lot of things that humans can do way better than machines can, even with only minimal training, that are vital to science - especially digitizing records and building searchable databases

Like labeling trees in aerial photos so that scientists have better datasets to use for restoration.

Or counting cells in fossilized plants to track the impacts of climate change.

Or digitizing old atmospheric data to help scientists track the warming effects of El Niño.

Or counting penguins to help scientists better protect them.

Those are all on one of the most prominent citizen science platforms, called Zooniverse, but there are a ton of others, too.

Oh, and btw, you don't have to worry about messing up, because several people see each image. Studies show that if you pool the opinions of however many regular people (different by field), it matches the accuracy rate of a trained scientist in the field.

--

I spent a lot of time doing this when I was really badly injured and housebound, and it was so good for me to be able to HELP and DO SOMETHING, even when I was in too much pain to leave my bed. So if you are chronically ill/disabled/for whatever reason can't participate or volunteer for things in person, I highly highly recommend.

Next time you wish you could do something - anything - to help

Remember that actually, you can. And help with some science.

Yup, these are actually *really* important. And a small bit of work helps, so it’s doable even if you’re snowed under with survival work or in too much pain to concentrate for longer periods.

It’s multiply-checked by more than one person, so don’t worry about fucking it up because your concentration is fucked. Your input is valuable but not the only input.

I find Zooniverse very good, and it does Citizen Historian work too - I spent time digitising concentration camp records because a) families still don’t know what happened to some of their loved ones b) this makes the records available for historians without travelling to archives in person, which I can testify is *invaluable* for disabled historians and helps cut the need for overseas travel to do vital historical work.

It unexpectedly helped me with learning how to decipher premodern handwriting too, which proved really useful in my academic stuff. You *will* pick up valuable skills doing this. Put it on your CV.

Other places you can go to do citizen science, from the notes

(Thanks to everyone who left these in the notes! If you know more, put them in the notes, and I might add them! And ty @enbycrip for the fantastic addition that covered a bunch of details I didn't get to)

Hey guys, these projects make a HUGE difference for science. For example, I run bplant.org and iNaturalist is the #1 source of images in ID guides and articles and other educational materials I develop. The plant observations are also helpful for assessing plant ranges and how these ranges are changing with climate change. And it also helps me identify local seed sources for use in restoration plantings. Use of iNaturalist, even casual use like a random person uploading pics of plants they see growing in their yard, or a random parking lot they were in, or a random vacant lot, those observations are MAJORLY helping in (1) education (2) science (3) conservation.

This stuff makes a huge difference.

Also, if you want to make the biggest impact on these sites, release any material with the more permissive licenses, like CC-BY. If you add a NC or ND clause, for instance, your photos cannot be included on Wikipedia or bplant or a number of other educational sites, because those license restrictions are incompatible with combining with copyleft material.

But yeah, go do citizen science, please!!!

I thought I'd go back and repost this because there are probably a lot of people out there who, like me, reallllyyyyyy need something to distract them right now

So, hey. You. Stop doomscrolling. Take a deep breathe. And if you want, try doing some citizen science or citizen history instead

I'm also going to especially promote MapSwipe, for those who want to do something tangible to help people now.

From their website:

Data Everywhere

In today's technology-filled world, we have access to vast amounts of information at our fingertips. This includes geospatial data, which helps us understand places and the “where?” of things - a vitally important piece of successful humanitarian programs. It is important for getting from point A to point B as well as for coordination, understanding needs, tracking impact, identifying gaps, and a multitude of other concerns. For responsible use by humanitarians, this information must be assessed, refreshed, and validated as populations, infrastructure, and the surrounding environments experience the inevitable changes that occur as time, conflicts, and disasters unfold... Hello dear .. My name is Abdul Rahman Halas, married to the martyred journalist Alaa Al-Dahdouh. My journalist wife works for the Watan News Agency and we had a beautiful child named Karam. The real disaster began on Wednesday, May 31, 2024, when my wife, my child and I were surprised by a huge missile that fell on us and exploded in the place where we were, targeting the house we fled to and other neighboring houses

. At that moment, my journalist wife Alaa hugged our child Karam to protect him from the hell of the missile, but she turned into pieces and died immediately. My child Karam and I miraculously escaped certain death when the pressure of the missile threw me a long distance, which resulted in me being injured by numerous shrapnel and multiple injuries that led to severe fractures in my leg and damage to the nerves in my hand and foot and various shrapnel in different parts of my body

. My wife is a journalist covering the crimes of genocide against defenseless civilians in the Gaza Strip. With the intensification of the bombing and the scarcity of food and water, my wife and I struggled daily to secure food for our only child Karam, who was also suffering from severe fear because of The brutal bombing of the Gaza Strip.

Now after the disaster that befell my family, I need your generous support to overcome my ordeal and pay for my treatment and surgeries. I need several surgeries outside the Gaza Strip that cost a lot of money, and I am in dire need of your tears and support.

I am confident that after reading my sad story, you will sympathize with me and share with me and will not leave me and my child Karam alone.

Donate to me or share my campaign with your friends to donate to me

No matter how small your donation is, it means to me a chance for me and my child to be treated and to stay safe.

I'm writing a new post because old ones don't get reblogged as much - as if the need for donations goes away the moment post is 4 days old. And even if they do get reblogs, they don't translate to donations.

So. This is a new post for Falastin even though nothing changed. There's literally nothing new to tell, all the horrors are still the same as they were a week or a month ago and they still could die any moment. But saying everything once again:

  • 24 family members
  • displaced more than 50 times
  • family has many martyrs, last one less than a month ago
  • need funds for daily essentials (food, water, medicine) and tent materials + clothing for the winter
  • have raffle for hand-made Palestinian thobe (!! link !!) - 6 days left as of posting this

There have been 9 donations in the last 24 hours, and 3 the 24 hours before. 125 and 17 usd raised respectively. THAT'S 3 USD PER PERSON FOR ONE DAY. The donations usually come up only when there's another martyr or another displacement so please make a pleasant surprise for Falastin's family (they haven't got one in more than a year) and donate if you can.

Preferred way - Gofundme (in SEK, 10 USD = 106 SEK):

PayPal (in USD):

Vetting info: #282 in El-Shab-Hussein and Nabulsi's spreadsheet [here], #957 in the Butterfly Project spreadsheet [here] Falastin's account: [link]

also boost the raffle post please. thank u.

How are you doing? Reminder to take any meds and hydrate (if you'd like). We're doing good work in this community, and I'm proud of us all. Let's get into it:

A TEENAGER TAKING CARE OF HIS 4-YEAR-OLD SISTER IN GAZA NEEDS OUR HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A TEENAGER IS WAY TOO YOUNG TO TAKE CARE OF A 4-YEAR-OLD, ESPECIALLY IN GAZA.

THEY ARE GETTING BOMBED WITH ENRICHED URANIUM BOMBS AND NEED FOOD, SANITARY SUPPLIES, ETC AND THEY NEED TO GET OUT.

I hope you read the part about the baby chicks, and the emotional toll of evacuation.

Please help this kind, caring teen @sham-amany and his very young sister. They need our community to step in. We can do this together.

Forgot to add vetting here, they are #8.

NO DONATIONS FOR 24 HOURS!!!!!

They can't live off of this

Genuinely, great job on the reblogging, friends, I appreciate it so much. No new donations all day though!!!! Monir and Sham need to eat and get so many basic supplies, as well as get out of there!!!! Sham has a skin condition from the contaminated water they have to use. These kiddos have no one to take care of them. It takes a village -- let's be that village!!!!!

€2,129 / €35,000

Only €10 raised in the last 24 hours!!! Please support Mounir and his family. They are struggling just to stay alive, and to meet basic needs like food, water, and shelter, while having to live in fear of bombing all around them. Just today, as Mounir went to get supplies for his family, a building in front of him was bombed. Please, share and donate, help the Raed family get what they need to survive! Help Story Go Home

Hi y'all! As you likely know, I've had a rough go of it since my sister died suddenly in July. Following that, I contracted vibrio from a foot injury. I just finished my third round of antibiotics, but recovery remains in the air. Finally, my housing became unstable during a storm that badly damaged my roof. Although we repaired the roof, the damage revealed issues with my housing that make it unsustainable in the long-term. More information under the cut and on the GoFundMe page!

UPDATE: Ko-Fi donations are processing through Paypal as "Goods and Services," meaning anything I raise above $600 will be considered taxable income, which I will have to file and pay next year. I have decided to launch a GoFundMe campaign in lieu of this, which are considered gifts and generally not taxed. GoFundMe does require a minimum $5 donation, and I know not everyone can use GoFundMe, so please feel free to continue supporting me via Ko-Fi if necessary, with GoFundMe as the preferred method. Thank you!

Hi.

I have a question for you: What the hell is wrong with you? No, I'm serious. How can you turn a blind eye? How can you cover your ears? How can you resume your everyday life and act like everything is OK?

What the fuck is wrong with you?

We are a year into the accelerated genocide. The settler colony has increased their aggression in North Ghazzah. Jabalia has been under constant bombardment for 2 weeks! It is on fire. Bodies are charred to the point where they are unrecognizable! Again, ask yourself: how can you overlook this? What if this happens to you and your family? Wouldn't you want someone to stop this cruelty?

Then, stop looking away and do your part. Please spare any change you have to Mohammed Al-Habil (@alhabil) and his family. He is in Nuseirat with his wife, Aya, his 3 young children, Ahmed (8), Osama (6), and Mira (4). Keep in mind that Nuseirat is a dangerous place to be in. A school has been attacked just hours ago! 17 people have been martyred while 42 are injured!

His kids have contacted scabies over the summer, and they still have it to this day! Mohammed is also caring for elderly parents who are chronically ill with diabetes and high blood pressure. He needs to purchase medication as well as a new tent since the one he has been in has flooded!

So help us raise the short-term goal of 36K ASAP! €35,435 has been raised. There is a €565 left to go! You can even match me! I have given €5, but you are more than welcome to give more!

Verification: #166 in the Spreadsheet.

I don't care if you're squeamish. Read this.

Imagine small insects burrowing into your skin. Laying their eggs inside you. Their larvae growing inside you till, pop ! they emerge, sticky, and wet, and disregarding you as if you are nothing but a mere hive.

This is what Mohammed's children are living with every day. This is what Mohammed needs funds for to get rid of and he's only gotten €10 in the past 3 hours. Donate.

Only 3 donations has been made in the past 15 HOURS. I genuinely don't know what to say. How can you guys live with your lives and pretend that everything is OK. Stop looking away. Do your part. Donate and share.

It is a shame to see where personal interests have more importance than many lives who are surviving an accelerated genocide. So many people overlook the horror and violence. The illness and injuries. The cries, and screams. It makes them feel guilty and uncomfortable. So they donate to AO3 and read their fanfic or buy the latest game for a franchise. But you should feel guilty. You should feel uncomfortable!

So please stop thinking about yourself for 1 day. Show your support to Mohammed Al-Habil (@alhabil). He is a 30 year old entrepreneur and he is raising 3 young children, Ahmed (8), Osama (6), and Mira (4) with his kind wife, Aya. He is also looking after his elderly parents who are chronically ill with diabetes and high blood pressure.

Let's help him achieve the short-term goal of 36K! The funds raised will help him purchase a tent since the one before has been flooded due to the heavy rain. He also need to purchase medication for his parents as well as for his kids since they are in contact with scabies to this day!

You can match me! I've given €5, but you're more than welcome to give more.

Only one €5 donation in 8 hours. Mohammad is still stuck at €35,300.

mohammed has been fundraising since april and yet hasn't reached his goal. he has three children and elderly parents and needs a new tent. he cannot help his family without our help. please share and donate if you can.
