Animals having built-in weapons is nothing extraordinary. Think of an elephant’s tusks or a rhino’s horn, a scorpion’s tail and pincers, or beetles like Heracross’ nose. Gallade’s weapons are in his elbows; sharp, strong and ready to fight.
The interesting thing about Gallade is how its blades extend. Full on, X-men’s wolverine-style retractable elbow blades. I can see why this would be useful. When Gallade isn’t fighting, he certainly doesn’t want to harm anyone on accident. You don’t want your pokémon to kill a man from accidentally elbowing him in the ribs. Hiding the blades away also protects them from getting dulled or damaged over time. Like a true knight, Gallade keeps his swords sheathed when not in battle. But how?
There’s more examples of this in our nature then you’d think. The retractable claws of cats, for example. Not all species of cats have retractable claws, but those that do involve a simple tendon that pulls the claw out of its sheath when they tense up. The same effect as you flexing your muscles.
The cooler, weirder, and more extreme examples are found in amphibians. For example, there is a certain species of salamander, called the Iberian ribbed newt, which has a very unique defensive strategy. They have very sharp ribs, which are usually inside their bodies (like ribs should be). But, when they are in danger, they will contort their bodies to the point where their ribs will actually poke through their skin and offer themselves as weapons.
Or how about the Cameroon Hairy Frog, which will break its own bones to get claws to pierce through its skin, with no way or retracting them other than to let them shrink back in over time?
I don’t think Gallade is quite that extreme, but these animals are so cool what do we even need pokémon for? In any case, Gallade’s elbows are retractable like claws, which kick in when he needs defense or when he’s ready to fight.
Gallade’s elbow-blades contain mechanisms like claws, which allow him to extend and retract them when he needs to.
The ralts line has always been one of my favorites, and writing this post only solidifies that. Gallade is a gentleman x-men swordsman knight who fights with biological weapons in his forearms. How cool is that?
Previous stages of technique experiments with my workshop left me with a desire to see what emerges should I try the same with fanart - of the Pokemon variety, to be exact. There is always an element of surprise with putting ones own mannerisms to the task of depicting creations of others, making it the kind of fun I couldn’t refuse myself in recent days.
Top - basic watercolour went over pencil sketch, with full inking drawn on top of it along with final dash of watercolour. Second of the two in the set, it felt less promising at first, but overshadowed its watercolour-only predecessor in the end.
Bottom - watercolour over pencil, gouche used for accents.
Pokemon belong to GameFreak, Nintendo.
