This Birdsday Thursday, Rook and Bishop discovered that the Targent Uniform isn't only unfashionable, it also gets in the way of their...very important business .
I've neglected Birdsday Thursday for a few weeks (boo) but I'm back with something a bit different:
I got a bit burned out from drawing, but ever since I got ahold of Rook and Bishop's 3D models, they're my new favorite thing to play with.
So I decided to let Bishop's dream come true: A photo with the phoenix statue. Although Bishop's head is covering most of it. Oh well, it's the thought that counts.

No Birdsday Thursday today.
Unfortunately I overestimated my artistic capabilities and was unable to complete an artwork for this week.
Translation: Tried something complex (for me at least) and it's taking longer than I planned.
Anyway, here's a behind the scenes sketch of LMJ Era Bishop to tide you over.
It's another Birdsday Thursday and as promised, here's LMJ Era Rook:
- Healthy weight gain!!! Good for him!! Thanks to his husband's home cooking and his daughter in law's cakes, Rook is no longer a stick figure. Love to see it.
- He also smiles a lot more. Leaving Targent decreased his stress levels by 80% and he is more willing to be silly and goofy with his partner.
- He's still a bit of a grouch and often complains about the weather, the neighbors kids, the government, typical old man things.
- The outfit is similar to Layton's, but in Rook's style. The jumper gives gentleman grandpa vibes.
- His hair is greying and thinning, but still floofy. He usually just ties it out the way.
- That's his pet canary on his head. Yes, Rook and Bishop are certified Bird Dads™️. Her name is Phoenix, Fifi for short. You'll learn more about her soon.
Next week will be my design for child Hastings.

A week has passed since the last Birdsday Thursday, and Rook and Bishop have finally received a reply:
They only read the first line and they started bawling. Lol.
Don't worry, they're happy tears. I think. Or maybe it's because Layton snuck a hidden puzzle into the letter.
Either way, don't tell anyone. They have a reputation to maintain.

It's Birdsday Thursday, you know what that means! ....cleaning day.
This Birdsday Thursday, Professor Layton received a surprising letter out of the blue.
When Rook and Bishop found out Professor Layton had been found, they wanted to reach out to him. But they weren't sure if he would want to see them again, so they wrote a letter and had Hastings deliver it.
They act like it's no big deal, but Layton did more for them then he realises and they really hope he remembers them. I'm sure he does.
Do you know about the French translation of PL. Do you know Bishop and Rook are called Buse and Bécasse, meaning "Buzzard" and "Woodcock" because French Targent has a bird theme going, but also both words are slang for "moron"

This is hilarious but can you believe the disrespect!
Imagine starting your first day at work and your boss says, "Welcome to Targent. From now on you will be known as Idiot and Moron."
On a more serious note, I love how each version of Azran Legacy sticks to the bird theming, but chooses birds that have different meanings.
UK Azran Legacy calls them Rook and Bishop, which are birds but also chess pieces to show that they are only seen as pawns by Targent.
French Azran Legacy calls them Buse and Bécasse to show that they aren't very smart.
Spanish Azran Legacy calls them Tort and Olito, which combines to make Tortolito, showing that they literally complete one another.
Idk I think it's neat.

For the second Birdsday Thursday, I thought I'd try something simple and do some expression practice:
Both expressions are based of Inspector Hastings' expression sheet because, in case you didn't know, he is the canonical son of Rook and Bishop.... according to me.

Oh no! For the first day of Birdsday Thursday, Rook and Bishop have been turned into marketable plushies! And even worse, egg plushies!
Here's the backstory:
After Aurora took the True Popoño with her, the residents of San Grio were very sad. They knew it was the right thing to do, but the Harmony Ring had brought so much joy to the people. What would they do now?
Then, all of a sudden Benni came running over. He excitedly announced that two unknown men just bought his entire stock of popoños! Now he could afford to take his business around the world!
And it wasn't just Benni. Multiple popoño sellers came forward with stories of the two men and their irresponsible buying. This was the best season they'd ever had!
In honor of their best customers, the residents of San Grio came together to create two special popoños of the men.
The souvenirs quickly became incredibly popular and became known as the Tortolito Popoños.
It is said that buying both together grants the owner good wealth and fortune. They are also very popular wedding cake toppers for some reason.

Basically every Thursday I am going to try (key word try) to draw my favorite Targent Agents doing whatever.
It will probably start out rough, but I can only improve, right?
Feel free to suggest any ideas to keep the series going.
And if anybody else wants to take part, you don't have to do something for Rook and Bishop. The day is for any Layton character with a bird name/theme. There's a lot more than you may think!
