What she means: Why isn’t it taught that abortion was perfectly legal in the US in early 1870s and it wasn’t until a Jewish doctor, who was being framed, was put on trial for manslaughter (a trial, as well as the press covering it, which was greatly tinged with antisemitism) that opened the floodgates for antiabortion crusaders which eventually led to its criminalization?

Our First Experience With Antisemitism (Except for All The Other Times)

This passage, about a Jewish couple in Tennessee whose attempt to adopt a three-year old child was rejected because they were Jewish, struck a chord with me:

It strikes a chord because it is reminiscent of a phenomenon Albert Memmi explored in his Portrait of a Jew. Memmi speaks of how often Jews speak of never being truly “aware” of antisemitism until some particularly stark incident slaps them across the face. Until that moment, they will say, antisemitism was never really a “thing” in their lives. And yet, if you press them a bit, it turns out that this overt incident was not the first – there were other incidents, perhaps many other incidents, but for whatever reason they didn’t “count”, and it doesn’t occur to them to mention them or even think about them as antisemitic incidents. So after the initial declaration that the overt incident was “the first time”, there comes the belated admission that well, I guess it wasn’t the first time, not by a long shot, and what at first might have felt like a isolated, even freakish incident, really is just bringing to the foreground a lot of baggage which had been tucked away in the background.

We could all stand to wonder why this practice exists, and why it has existed for so long and over eras and locations where it seems nobody – least of all the Jews – should have had any trouble recognizing that antisemitism wasn’t isolated or freakish (Memmi’s examples were people like Herzl and Einstein).  What explains this pattern? Why is our first instinct, our deep psychology, to “forget” antisemitism has happened to us?

Because I’m only seeing other Jews posting about this, non-Jews I need you to be aware that for the past month or two there has been a wave of bomb threats and swattings at synagogues all across the US. They usually do it when services are being livestreamed. I haven’t seen a single non-Jew talking about this. High holidays are coming up in a few weeks, which is when most attacks happen against our communities. We’re worried, and we need people to know what’s happening to us.

My coworkers complain when we can’t assign homework over Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. As if somehow this interferes with their ability to teach their classes.

My coworkers complain that our Muslim students get to leave class to pray Salat at noon. Like, we have maybe one Muslim student every two or three years - thus far, all extraordinarily respectful and lovely kids! - and they slip quietly out of class to pray.

My coworkers find all this infuriating. “Imagine,” they cry, “If a Christian kid asked to do that.”

I calmly explain, every single time, that a Christian kid would never HAVE to do that, because every single Christian holy day is a day off school. Good Friday. Easter Sunday. Christmas day. Our entire country interrupts its financial and educational systems - schedules its WEEKS - around the Christian prayer customs and seasons.

God forbid we temporarily unclip the rope barrier and leave an opening for someone whose religious traditions vary from our own.

Heck, the only holy day we DON’T get off is Ash Wednesday, and that only involves a church service if you’re Catholic.

You know how people always say that we (Americans) learn about the Holocaust in public school because it was a white people killing white people genocide? And then they use that to point to the fact that our education system/curriculum is painfully inadequate at showing non-western European history. And while that is obviously true (that our education system focuses on Western European history to the exclusion of the rest of the world), we REALLY don’t learn about the Holocaust.

All we learn is that it happened and that people were murdered starved to death or contracted typhus and died (looking at you John Green). We really don’t learn about the details of the what, why, and how the Holocaust happened. We don’t learn about the other groups of victims. Except as a footnote where they’re referred to by a slur.

We don’t learn about the resistance movements: the partisan movements, the ghetto uprisings, the uprisings in the actual concentration camps. We don’t learn about the rise of the Nazi Party (other than that the economic destruction and devastation of Germany following WWI somehow made for fertile ground for the Nazi party; as if hundreds of years of institutionalized antisemitism had NOTHING to do with it). We don’t learn about the Damascus affair or the Dreyfus affair. We don’t learn about the pogroms. 

We don’t learn about how the Holocaust reached all the way into North Africa and the Middle East. We don’t learn the connection between the Holocaust and Farhud. Because they’re somehow not connected? Even though the German embassy in Iraq published and promoted antisemitic materials translated into Arabic. Materials like, you know, Mein Kampf. Even though Hitler publicly voiced his support of Iraqi nationalists. Even though the Farhud occurred in June of 1941 and the Holocaust occurred from the institution of the Nuremberg Law in 1935 to the liberation of the camps in 1945. 

We NEVER learn about the aftermath of the Holocaust. We never learn about the camps for displaced persons. Because they couldn’t “go back to Poland.” All their property and homes had been taken by their gentile neighbors. We never learn about European and North American countries turning away Holocaust survivors by the boat load. We never learn about how the British limited Jewish immigration into Palestine and would send any “illegally” smuggled Jewish survivors whom they caught into a new DP camp on Cyprus (because both Palestine and Cyprus were under British control at the time).

We never learn about the 4.500 Jewish survivors on the ship “Exodus” who were fired upon by British troops when the were closely outside of Palestine; killing and wounding Jewish Holocaust survivors. The British threatened to sink that ship. And they returned all those Holocaust survivors back to Europe, where they were forcibly carried off the boat by British troops.

So we learn that the Holocaust happened, but we don’t really learn about the Holocaust.

Can people please fucking stop making "haha, Floridians are all poor stupid crackheads" jokes?

If we're poor, it's because our state government cares more about the rich tourists in the coastal high-rises than the average citizen, and the cost of living won't stop rising no matter how hard the people scream for relief.
