“I’m not that little girl you have to protect anymore” ~ Interview with Yukana (Meiling’s VA) in Animage 06/2018

I had the chance to give a look to the interview with Meiling Li’s voice actress Yukana that is being featured on the Animage issue currently in stores, the June one, and I felt so touched by her words that I decided to make my usual “highlights” post! This interview is highly focused on Meiling, so if you don’t like her….you know what to do! As usual, I’m not a native English speaker, so forgive me if my translation sounds a bit off. If you mean to repost or translate this in another language, send me a message/credit me, thanks!

The title of the interview is “She became a little bit more mature ahead (of everyone else)”

  • Yukana starts the interview saying how she didn’t even think Meiling would appear at all in the Clear Card anime, because she’s is an anime-only character, although the interviewer points out that she blends so well with the CCS world, that is hard to believe she’s an “original character”.
  • Yukana continues saying that when they announced that CCS would get a new series, she was very happy and wanted to fully support it as “audience” , because it’s a work full of memories for her. When she met Aya Hisakawa (Kero’s VA) during the recordings for a different work, she congratulated her for reprising her role as Kero-chan. Then, precisely in those days, when she looked at her schedule book she found “Card Captor Sakura” and was honestly believing there was a mistake or something, because she didn’t understand how Meiling could fit in the story since she doesn’t appear in the manga…it was a very pleasant surprise for her as well! Yukana points out often how much she loves CCS.
  • She was very surprised when Meiling said “I have the intention to go to Japan during summer vacations” in episode 6, thinking “Will I really join everyone else? When is this ‘summer vacation’ ?” Then, Meiling finally shows up in episode 13, and Yukana says how she enjoyed the fact that she stayed at Sakura’s home, in a place where they had the opportunity to get closer because very “intimate”. She mentions how the scene of Meiling drying Sakura’s hair left a strong impression on her, because in that situation the two became very close.
  • The interviewer goes on mentioning that Meiling looked rather matured.  Yukana: “If you look at the previous series by Meiling’s point of view, you can actually perceive it as a story of a girl’s growth. Her beloved Syaoran was struggling with the events surrounding the Clow cards. Precisely because she loved him a lot, she wanted to help him with her own strength, but she’s got no magical powers. She obtained both knowledge and physical abilities by putting a lot of effort, but no matter how she works hard for it, she’ll never be able to obtain magical powers. Such young Meiling could not accept this sad reality, that’s why I think she was trying to give some kind of stability to her heart by considering Sakura a rival, in the beginning.  While Sakura and Syaoran were experiencing growth as people who can handle magical powers, she had to fight hard against all the things that resulted in nothing, Syaoran’s feelings included, and had to overcome them, so she became a little more mature in the process.
  • The interviewer asks if the reason why Meiling avoided Syaoran, who worried over her, was coming from that experience.  Yukana: “Yes, probably. Meiling is already confident with herself, so I think she looks at still clumsy Syaoran feeling like a mother or a sister. She understands that Syaoran is doing it out of care for her, but to Meiling sometimes it seems (his worry) is misdirected. So I was thinking that, slightly annoyed by that, she’s probably feeling like ”It’s not me the person you must watch over. I’m not that little girl who must be protected by you anymore.“ I think that she conveyed a little of that feeling to Syaoran, when they had that conversation over the phone while Meiling was going back to Hong Kong.
  • The interviewer says “It seems Meiling graduated from the childhood love” Yukana: “The Meiling of the previous series was just content with being looked after and treasured by Syaoran. But, she ended up realizing that being protected like you would do with a person weaker than you, out of sense of duty and desire to protect, wasn’t the feeling she wanted (from Syaoran). Of course, I think there isn’t just that, but…once she realized that, being treated with care became also difficult for her.
  • The interview continues mentioning that Yukana had a lot of fun while Meiling and Sakura prepared gyoza together. The recordings were being held at evening so she became really hungry after that scene! Yukana also mentions she liked the episode where everyone became animals. Her favorite was Tomoyo as a sheep who was carefreely sitting while everyone else was in a panic (note: I think Yukana’s memories of the episode are slightly off here).
  • The interviewer takes the opportunity to say that Meiling’s care for Sakura and Syaoran looks similar to Tomoyo’s. Yukana “Tomoyo gave Meiling a lot of support in the previous series. Because she is someone who had to get over (love) all by herself, and now she thinks about "Sakura’s happiness” first and foremost. I think we can say that, just like the current Meiling, she’s a character whose priority is someone else’s feelings, even if they aren’t directed towards herself. But this time, it seems to me that Meiling has got a very firm focus in her heart, so much that she doesn’t need to sympathize with someone else to carry on her own will anymore. We can also say that Meiling and Tomoyo’s relationship is one where they can understand eachother without even exchanging a word. In Tomoyo’s case, Sakura is ultimately the focus, but Meiling gives me a different impression, Sakura and Syaoran are both important existences to her at the same level”.
  • The interview continues with Yukana’s/Meiling’s impressions on Akiho, where she says it was interesting how she immediately put herself in an equal position as Akiho, once she realized that she didn’t use keigo with her to put distance between them, but just because it was a habit. Yukana remarks how amazing it is that she can assess these situations without even being a Japanese native speaker.
  • As expected, the interviewer asks about the Cantonese lines she had to say during Meiling’s stay. Yukana says that after receiving the scenario, she started to look for a Cantonese speaking person in a hurry, through the friend of an acquaintance. Since nowadays Japanese anime is a worldwide thing, she wanted to make sure her pronounciation would be as close as possible to the real Cantonese language, so she had this person recording some things that someone living in Hong Kong would normally say, and some other things a bit more slowly, then she practiced on those.
  • The interview concludes with the interviewer saying that, as a fan, she/he hopes to see Meiling again, and Yukana says that while she’d be very happy if she had the opportunity to appear again, she doesn’t want it to be forced, because it must be fitting the story. If the possibility for a proper role for Meiling does exist, she would be glad to participate again! BONUS:
  • In a small circle on the side of the interview, Yukana talks about the scene where Meiling dries Sakura’s hair. Drying someone else’s hair, or having her hair dried by someone else is an act she likes a lot. Hair holds a lot of meanings for a girl, and touching someone’s hair or letting them touch it makes the “distance of the heart” shrink. She feels that thanks to that scene, Meiling and Sakura’s relationship deepened once more.
  • In another circle, Yukana mentions how she feels that this time, starting by a new relationship with Syaoran, Meiling became sort of a guide to Sakura, who’s currently got her heart shaken by many events. Probably this seemingly more mature Meiling wanted Sakura to feel and think about certain things. Among her family, friends and also her role as a cardcaptor, in the whole situation surrounding Sakura, which one is the most important thing to her. She wants her to grasp it tightly and think about what is the best way to protect all of those above. Yukana says that although there are wonderful adults like Fujitaka, this is a story about children gaining something with their own strength. In this situation, the current Meiling becomes sort of an adviser.

Aaaand that’s it! Honestly this interview made me love Meiling even more, but most of all, it surprised me because I didn’t even imagine Yukana had such a good insight on CCSakura’s world.

I love how people are DEMANDING a new season of CCSCCA. Like, the season only just ended. Madhouse isn’t going to magically pull it out of their arse.

Avatar
sakura-mori

also did people esp those who saw the series when it was airing on TV forget that during the original series, season 2 didn’t air until 4 months after season 1 ended? Season 1 ended December 1998 and season 2 began April 1999. And I’m sure back then they didn’t announce season 2 since this was 1999.

THISSSSS

I saw a post on one of my social media sites I use that was complaining and saying “the original series was continuous wth is with this” basically, and I just shook my head and resisted the urge to bash my head against the wall because it was definitely not continuous in the sense it didn’t have any breaks. Coz there was definitely breaks. Like the very obvious 4 month break between season one and two.

People are also forgetting that the previous anime had 70 episodes but are complaining that Clear Card is moving too slow. Like…what?

OH MY GOSH YES LET ME GET SALTY FOR A MOMENT AND REBLOG THIS BECAUSE SERIOUSLY

I’ve been tweeting in Italian about this because I’ve seen a lot of complaints in the italian audience too but, if I dived into the international reactions I could’ve probably pulled my hair from exasperation

EVERY SINGLE THING SAID IN THIS POST IS TRUE

The old anime was 70 episodes long, but let’s take just the first arc as a comparison: 46 episodes and we got to the core of the story in episode 45, when Sakura captured the last card and the Final Judgement started. Until then, it was 44 episodes of slice of life having always the same pattern: Sakura goes to school, Sakura encounters a card, she waits for a better moment to capture it, she captures it, end of the episode! And this for 44 episodes. Tell me again about slow development? Geez, I saw people starting to ask for answers in EPISODE 5 OF CLEAR CARD! “Cool but nothing happens” Dude what do you expect to happen in episode 5?? :(

And the breaks too, yes, even back in the 90s it was customary to break the anime series into seasons, nowadays we have one further method of division, the “cours”, which correspond to a batch of 3 months of airing time. Currently, the Clear Card Arc anime lasted for 2 cours.

I’m sorry, I’m rarely salty on my blog but this matter is really getting on my nerves, asking for a new season IS OK because we have to show interest to the producers, but BASHING the production committee because they ended Clear Card like this and DEMANDING another series otherwise they consider the anime shit (I swear I saw someone asking back “all the time I wasted on this”) IS A BIG NO NO. Please calm down and don’t do that.

It’s really sad how people think they’re entitled to demand things for free these days. The anime and manga don’t magically appear for free 😒 they take time and money

Yes, there’s actually a whole lot of reasons why we shouldn’t expect a follow-up anytime soon, like it’s pretty clear that they want to follow the manga more closely than in the 90s, so they probably have to wait for CLAMP to continue the story or even finish it (if it ends with volume 6) before starting to work on the new episodes, in order for things like episode 17and onwards to not happen again (they were late on their schedule, that’s why the rush). Plus, next year the second season of Chihayafuru will air, and everyone is basically giving for granted that director Asaka will work on it, so it’s really risky (but not impossible) for a director to work on 2 series at the same time. And character designer Hamada seems involved too. With the staff busy working on another series, things are more difficult. If they asked me “Choose: waiting more time but keeping the same staff or waiting less but changing the staff?”, I’d certainly choose the first one. Asaka completely gets CLAMP and the atmosphere of CCS, so I’d feel really anxious if it ended up in the hands of another director. Not saying they would do a bad job, but why changing a winning formula…

“I will not make this simple just because it's a kids show” ~ Morio Asaka x Sakura Tange interview in Newtype 05/2018

Here I am again, with the highlights of another interview with Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card’s director Morio Asaka, together with Sakura Tange (Sakura’s voice actress), as part of the special feature of this month’s Newtype issue. Beware, the post is gonna be long, but please take some time to read it, it’s pretty interesting. As usual, if you mean to repost or translate this in another language, send me a message/credit me, thanks!

  1. - The interview starts with Asaka saying that while Clear Card is a story about Sakura growing and becoming stronger, lately he found himself thinking that she’s become even stronger than he initially thought. Sakura Tange agrees, saying that she initially thought Clear Card would see Sakura gradually becoming stronger. Instead, right from episode 1, she didn’t hesitate, took the new key and chanted her Release! spell. Tange was kinda surprised by this and found herself wanting to catch up quickly with Sakura’s growth.
  2. - Asaka mentions he wondered how far he should go with the depiction of Sakura and Syaoran’s relationship. He says “If it goes too far, it wouldn’t be CCSakura anymore…although right in episode 1 they suddenly hugged like that (laughs)” After that, they went back to their usual innocent selves so there’s quite a gap, but he understands now that they acted like that because of the time they’ve spent apart. Tange: “When I saw that hug in the manga I’ve sent a picture of it to Kumai (Syaoran’s VA), and told her “we have a case here!!”, and she replied something like “What’s that!? My brain can’t keep up!”. That was definitely a scene that shook both of us”.
  3. - Asaka talks about Sakura Tange’s acting qualities, saying that he chose her for the quality of her voice. He emphasized the fact that Sakura Tange’s voice had just that perfect addictive something for a life-size Sakura. Sakura Tange said that she didn’t try to high-pitch her voice to make her cute, and the fact that she was chosen for this makes her happy.
  4. - They end up talking about the recording process and what’s Asaka’s role in it, and Sakura Tange points out that this Clear Card arc’s recording is dense of details and demanding for more and more, and it’s the first time she encountered such a refined work. Since Tange found the same opinion from the other VAs too, she asks Asaka if all this refined work has a reason behind it. Asaka says that one of the reasons depends on the fact that, in the previous series, the characters used to “be at the mercy of the events”, while this time Sakura is a lot more withstanding/resistant, Syaoran knows something and has got his own goal in mind, so when the story gets to the stage where (the characters) will start to put together the puzzle pieces of the story, the acting will become quite intense. Asaka: Ever since the previous seasons, I decided I would not make this simple just because it’s a kids show, and this is gonna be apparent even more in this Clear Card arc.  Although, it may also depend on how my way to direct my shows has changed over the years.”
  5. - When asked if his style changed to match Sakura’s growth, he says that this time the percentage of corrections to the storyboard is pretty high. He keeps adding details here and there.  Sakura Tange says she noticed that. She says it’s basically the first time she’s been constantly told “please play the character this way” while recording, because when playing a character since long time, normally in test stage she would agree with the staff on a general line to follow and then the rest will be left to her in recording stage. Instead here she’s constantly guided and it becomes really, really difficult for her. But she also points out that this goes to show just how much love and care they’re putting into this work. Asaka says What will happen from episode 13 will be even harder, though!” and Tange replies “It’s pretty hard already, haha”
  6. Tange explains that she’s never seen the cards as enemies until now, but rather as friends, so when sound director Masafumi Mima told her, since the beginning of the series, to “hit hard the cards as if you’re doing it with hatred and anger” she was very surprised. Tange: “For such a fluffy world view and a story that was kinda simple, she’s now getting such raw and life-risking battles (laughs). They’re asking me to portray that kind of tension.”
  7. - When asked if that’s from the early stage of the story, Tange replies that ever since the beginning, there’s this tension like “If I don’t do something, everyone is gonna die!” and mentions episode 2 as an example. Asaka takes the chance to point out how even Tomoyo had an hard time in episode 2, so there’s the fact that this time they’re showing more instances in which the characters are in difficult situations, even to the point that one might think “they’re gonna die!”. But, Asaka says he doesn’t see the cards as enemies and he has no intention to change that. They talk about how the cards this time seems “cold/inorganic” as opposed to the previous cards, and how cute Flight is, though.
  8. - The interview moves on to the favorite scenes among the episodes aired until now, and Sakura Tange mentions the lovey dovey scenes with Syaoran. About this, Asaka says he wants to show the cool way in which he nonchalantly carries on his task. That’s the cool side of Syaoran he wants to show, more than the aesthetic side. Asaka: “I can’t tell (in details) yet, but in the episodes from now on there’ll be plenty of cool Syaoran appearing. At the current stage I don’t know how I will portray this, but in my head there’s a veeery cool Syaoran”.
  9. - They talk about the first opening and ending, with the theme of “transparency” for the opening and the pure white dress as CLAMP’s idea. Then Asaka confirms something the japanese animation enthusiasts had already guessed right: he says he left the ending completely in the hands of a “certain person” who did also the third ending of the previous series, “Fruits Candy”.
  10. - When asked how the story will develop from now on, Asaka says all the scenarios are already completed, and they’re currently working on the last storyboard. As far as he’s allowed to say, the story is finally reaching the core of the big mystery of this series, which is the mysterious cloaked person who appears in Sakura’s dreams. Tange: “Since I don’t know anything about this, but I’m half anxious, half expecting what is about to come, if there’s something I don’t understand I think it would be a good idea if I went to ask you for clarifications” Asaka: “Sure, come at any time. Although I might not be able to answer you. (laughs)”  Asaka, never change. :)

Card Captor Sakura Clear Card anime news (?)

Ok guys, here’s the thing:

The latest Animedia magazine of December features an interview with character designer Kunihiko Hamada. He was asked several questions (and there are many interesting tidbits) but the most important thing is

IT SEEMS

and read that twice

IT SEEMS

that the new Card Captor Sakura Clear Card anime will not be tied to the OAD released in September (that one looks like it’s in “another timeline”), but rather to the old 90′s anime/ second movie,  The Sealed Card.  In my opinion, the OAD is not “discarded”, it’s probably just a side project following the manga.

Fans on Japanese BBS/Twitter are already discussing about this because it’s not really clear what Hamada meant by that, and mostly, we were ALL convinced that the Sakura and the Two Bears OAD would act as a direct prologue of the new anime. He also adds that, being tied to the previous anime, Episode 1 will contain a “nostalgic scene” and Sakura and Syaoran’s reunion will be slightly different from the one we saw in the OAD. This probably explains why the upcoming The Sealed Card movie re-screening in December is being advertised as “Another story linked to Clear Card”.

Below you can find the cut of the magazine where Hamada says all of that:

image

I’d suggest you to still take this with a grain of salt, until further confirmation!
