“In 1941, Jews throughout the Third Reich were forced to wear a yellow Star of David. That same year, the first gassing experiments were conducted at Auschwitz and 33,771 Jews were killed by Germans and Ukrainians at Babi Yar outside Kiev. At the beginning of the war, the U.S. media rarely reported on or even knew about these horrific events, but word of Jewish suffering at the hands of Nazis trickled down to Kirby, Simon, and other Diaspora Jews in the form of wrenching letters from relatives trapped in the old country. Simon and Kirby used Captain America to strike back and boost American morale while proudly alluding to their religious faith. In a later issue, Steve Rogers watches newsreels depicting Nazi atrocities — newsreels Kirby and Simon surely must have watched as well. Captain America’s weapon of choice was a strange one — not a machine gun, but a shield. The shield is a famous Jewish symbol, the Magen David, which means the “Shield of David.” (It’s also known as the “Star of David” because the Magen David is a hexagram.) The term “shield” in Jewish prayer denotes the closeness and protection of God. In a sad twist of fate, Captain America’s costume featured a star at the same time that Simon and Kirby’s European brethren were being forced to wear a star of a very different kind.”

Murano glass Judaica. Italy, XIX-XX century.

The uniqueness of this collection, which has been formed for a long time, lies in the fact that all items intended for synagogue events and domestic rituals are made of glass - a material that has not been used in Judaica, unlike metal, in wide demand. Due to the fragility of the material and the destruction of Jewish ritual objects during the WWII, such things are few and far between and are extremely rare in collections.

y'know, a few years ago I was in Murano. I got to talking to a glass shop owner after I asked him about some Judaica he was selling, because I wondered if there were any Jewish artists working there. "Well, no," he said, "but did you know that Venice was the first city in the world to give Jews land?" which confused me, because what does that mean, to give land to? Jews have lived in most places and belonged to most countries, we don't say Paris "gave land to" the French.

he meant ghetto. the Venice ghetto was the first established in the world. the term ghetto comes from the Venetian geto, meaning foundry, the area Jews were forced to live in beginning in 1516.

we only "give land to" people we don't consider as belonging to the land to begin with. to ignore the exile of people from their homes and couch it in terms of giving ignores why they needed such a "gift", if it can be called that. it belies the insidious and widespread belief that Jews do not and have not belonged to the land, regardless of how many years they have lived there (for instance, Jews have been recorded as living in Italy specifically since 200 BCE).

there are fewer than 500 Jews left in Venice, none of whom made the Judaica I saw, or the little "charming" rabbi caricatures in the windows. but that glass shop owner was perfectly happy to take my money, and proud of the fact that Venice was the first city in the world to "give" Jews land. I'm too sick right now to weave my ends into something coherent, but in these times of endless debates and fights and bloodshed over what it all comes back to, land, I keep remembering this and feeling vaguely nauseous.

Does one have to be a practicing Jew for their antisemitic experiences to be valid, or are descendants that don't practice not 'really' Jewish enough to experience antisemitism.

Any kind of Jew can experience antisemitism. Practicing, non-practicing, matrilineal descent, patrilineal descent, convert, Ashkenazi, Beta Israel, Reform, Hasidic, and so on.

Antisemites (generally) don’t split hairs over how observant a Jew is or ask themselves “well, does she go to synagogue on Shabbat?” or “does he daven daily?” before they choose to target that person. All they care about is that the person is, to their knowledge, Jewish or a “Jew-sympathizer.” Observance of the halakhah just doesn’t tend to be the determining factor, and gentiles are often ignorant of halakha and Rabbinic teachings anyway.

That’s not to say that observant Jews, particularly those who wear traditional garb or things like kippot, cannot be easier targets for antisemites. People who are visibly Jewish can be targeted for antisemitism without ever having to say “yes, I am Jewish” or reveal a very Jewish surname. In addition, people who live in Jewish communities or are associated with Jewish organizations can be more easily targeted just out of the fact that it’s easier to tell that they are Jewish.

It’s worth mentioning that Jews who are not observant can also be visibly Jewish, whether because of genetics or due to wearing items such as Magen David necklaces, and can also be involved in Jewish organizations and the like. Religious observances isn’t the determining factor of “how Jewish” a person is, and how a person sees themself and presents themself to the world is very important.
