trust me, if “girl suffering” was all you got out of Madoka Magica, you missed something.

not to say whether that something is actually valuable to you. it might not be. but thats an opinion, while different from my own, i can at least respect.

I had literally always wondered about the chronology of the Sailor Moon media ecosystem because its always summarized just like “Takeuchi did a Sailor V one-shot then Toei was like cool can we do something with that” but I hadn’t really comprehended that it was organized at this scale, this is so wild (from Dreamland Japan by Frederik L. Schodt)

This is fascinating! I love learning behind-the-scenes stuff about Sailor Moon’s production.

I also love the bit where they explain furoku, which I have been collecting for several years.

I didn’t realize that the idea of a manga and anime running concurrently was a relatively new idea, and one they set out to coordinate from the beginning in order to generate hype for both versions. It’s interesting just how much of Sailor Moon’s initial launch and format were carefully calculated in order to maximize sales. I always thought it was just kind of an unfortunate consequence of the industry that the anime ran alongside the manga the way that it did, but actually it was that way by design.

Critics of the manga often complain about the pacing, but this implies that Naoko was under pressure to not only keep pace with the anime, but even coordinate the timing of story beats to be released at certain times of year. She had hardly any leeway at all to work with.
