i hate how "being a girl's girl" has replaced feminism. I hate that enforced conformity has replaced genuine compassion for and solidarity with other women. I hate how women call each other "pick me's" for not conforming to femininity or for daring to critique something other women like. I hate how we just keep finding new socially acceptable ways to bully other women for being unattractive or outspoken or difficult or complicated or weird or ambitious or for not performing femininity. I hate those front facing camera "comedians" whose whole thing is making up a straw-woman to make fun of. I hate the obsession with "girlhood" and clinging to being a girl instead of a woman. i hate "the girl version of the roman empire" and "girlhood" and it's just consumerism and I hate the characterised of girlhood as passivity, niceness, sweetness, helplessness and frivolity and I hate the revival of gender essentialism even as a joke!!!

don't even get me started on "girl dinner" and "girl math". It's just, respectively, dinner and poor financial literacy/discipline that anyone could have regardless of gender.

Hey you know what's super funny about the idea of "good bi rep"?

For a character to be canonically bi you have to make sure and establish that they're attracted to multiple genders. Not all mediums allow you to get inside every character's head or show what they're thinking. Flirting can be read ambiguously, and god forbid they flirt with a character who's not into them and be read as pushy or predatory. So it can be super handy to just mention an ex or two! But you better not mention too many exes because that would make them a slutty bisexual which is (checks notes) bad, and you definitely better be careful about making them poly, because that might make them, uh... greedy. Oh, and those exes? They better be perfectly amiable breakups with no conflict or drama, because it's bad to represent queer people in toxic or abusive relationships (especially queer women! very bad), and you definitely can't have them have lost a partner if the partner was queer because that's "bury your gays..." You should probably also eliminate all trauma from their backstory, just to be safe. You should probably also make sure they're not involved in crime, deception, or anything of the sort, because that would make them "deviant" and a stereotype.

But don't worry! Once you've carefully crafted your nice, monogamous, experienced-but-not-too-experienced Lawful Good bi character, you will be rewarded with your audience deeming them "boring" and quickly passing them over for other characters. :)

I will defend low-quality queer media if only because non-queer people get to make shitty low-quality media all the time and nobody gives a shit.

Queer people deserve to make shitty art as much as anyone else, god damn it. We've been censored for so goddamn long and I'm tired of every piece of queer media needing to be the height of representation and art and quality.

Queer media won't have achieved true equality with straight media until queer people can make garbage in peace.

In light of another queer show cancellation:

You can express anger at WLW media being treated poorly without tearing down MLM media. I've already seen "why doesn't Netflix cancel the cringey MLM shit instead" takes, and that is not okay. It wouldn't somehow be better if it was an MLM show getting cancelled, because it would be just as rooted in homophobia.

WLW media being cancelled is not the fault of queer men, it's the fault of societal and corporate homophobia. MLM deserve to be represented and deserve to enjoy MLM media. You don't have to tear down what little there is of that in order to make your points about WLW media. MLM aren't stealing the representation from you.

We are not in competition with each other. We do not fight over scraps. Express your rage at the right targets. Don't be a jackass just because you're angry.

OFMD has officially been cancelled, and I am once again thinking about all the people in the world who nitpick diverse media to hell and back when it isn't 100% perfect, as if having nothing at all would be preferable.

I'm so fucking tired of good, earnest, diverse media getting held to ridiculous standards by both networks AND fans, and then getting cancelled.

It was supposed to be three seasons. David Jenkins fucking said it was supposed to be three seasons. And then the network dragged its ass on renewing for season 2, and now...no season 3.

FUCK this shit. I'm so tired of media by and for marginalized artists getting fucked over. I'm tired of marginalized people fighting for scraps and then getting the rug whipped out from under us.

Yeah, OFMD isn't the only thing out there. There are other things to go enjoy, for the moment. But the fact that it's the shows that are queer and multicultural that keep getting cancelled is pretty fucking transparent, and I've seen quite a lot of concern from people in the industry about the direction we're headed. The outlook is concerning. It's more important now than ever to support marginalized artists, whether they're making indie art or trying to get something made by a mainstream studio.

Our Flag Means Death. Warrior Nun. One Day At A Time. Willow. Dead End: Paranormal Park. First Kill. Q-Force. The Owl House. Steven Universe. A League of Their Own. Vampire Academy. I could go on, but I don't need to, because there are entire lists that have been curated by news sites: Gay Times, Out, Autostraddle, Pride, Movieweb, Collider.

There's a reason I spend so much time and energy studying things like the Hays Code and the history of censorship. This shit comes in waves, and the only way marginalized artists survive it is through community support, mutual aid, and being really goddamn loud.

So be loud. Make art. Support your fellow artists and the artists you love. We need each other if we're going to weather the storm.

did... did someone write them an unpleasant comment and they confused that with censorship?

ok but does the character really need to be a straight white man? is that relevant to the plot or are we just catering to the audience? it’s forced representation like this that detracts from the storylines that really matter

I just don’t understand though, how can a character be straight, white, cis, male, able-bodied AND Neurotypical at the same time??? Why do they need so many labels??? Seems fake to me

“Wow how privileged do you have to be to believe queer isn’t a slur” idk man maybe they just aren’t….American….

actually i’m reblogging this again to agree with a bunch of people in the notes saying they’ve never personally witnessed it being used as a slur

i grew up in finland and what was flung at me was either “homo” which is literally just the politically neutral finnish word for gay, or sometimes “lesbo,” again just the finnish word for lesbian considered the most appropriate, with the odd “lepakko” (lit means bat but when used as a slang term means lesbian, close to d*ke but less offensive) or “hintti” (offensive but kinda childish way to call someone gay)

and then lived in raleigh, north carolina - people used and still use afaik gay as the choice insult – went to durham pride two times and both years the only slurs i heard from homophobes were the f slur, the t slur and the d slur. i just haven’t seen it. i fail to see how this is a privilege as much as it’s a regional experience… it’s not a privilege to be called a f*g instead of queer by homophobes like wtf

I grew up in the America South and let me tell you, queer wasn’t even near the top of the list of slurs to be thrown. I heard one queer for every 100 gay/homo/f*gg*t. You were more likely to get called a racial slur that didn’t apply to you than be called queer. We successfully reclaimed the word in the 80s/90s. It’s a word that carries so much less power as a slur because of it’s use within varied communities across the globe. It is a unifier and a call for rebellion.

300% of the backlash against the word comes from people who see who typically uses the word as a self-descriptor (e.g. trans women, nonbinary folx, bi/pan/mga people, multiplely queer folk, aro/ace peeps, queer polycules) and wish to silence them for that act of self description. They are threatened by our autonomy. For a lot of white cis gays, it’s a repetition of repression and exclusion that has existed as long as there have been groups focused on sexual/gender liberation: another marginalized group mentions a similarity between the oppression the “in” group faces and that which the “out” group faces, the “in” group uses it’s “authority on the subject” to deny entry into the larger group, usually by citing some form of oppression Olympics. It’s happened for every letter that’s gone into LGBT+. Gay men refused to let lesbians enter into their groups though homophobic violence is/was hurled at both groups. Bi/pan and trans people are still largely ignored/demonized with the LGBT community today despite being part of the alphabet soup for almost 25 years now (and having the highest rates of suicide, sexual assault, and poverty).

It’s because queer is intersectional and ambiguous that it threatens these people so much that they set up sock puppet accounts and try to attach pedophilia/rape appologia/incest to so many of the new ideas regarding sexuality and gender expression. The people most threatened by my and other’s choices to self-identity as queer are those with the largest stake in perpetuating capitalist cishetetopatriarchy.

People often mistakenly say “these people just want to be able to act like our oppressors” and that’s only partially true. They don’t want to act like our oppressors: They think they deserve to hold a position of violent authority over others after suffering through such authority their whole lives. Queer is the antithesis of this idea. Queer says “I have been deemed subhuman and unlovable my entire life for the inability to perform as a “ideal” individual based upon society’s standards of gender and sexuality and I wish for a world where no one will ever live with that fear again”.

Queer is a cry to end the societal cycle of acceptance (often only for profit) and exclusion/violence. Queer is radical and that makes it uncomfortable for the people who have newly granted privilege under law. They have theirs and even though I fought to help them, I must now help myself to get those same rights. Sure, cis gays and lesbians can now get married/not get fired for their sexuality/ have visitation rights in hospitals/et. al., But the rest of us still face legal abuse at the hands of our bosses and the government. It’s still legal in many states to use the trans panic defense. People have a legal route to get away with murdering trans women, and y'all are worried that I call myself queer?

“Why are you so upset about adult content bans? You don’t even post that stuff. can’t you just look at porn somewhere else?”

Well, you see, I have this small problem where my very existence is considered adult content by a small but very powerful group of people and I actually rather enjoy being able to exist in public without restriction so uhhhh put that in your bong and smoke it kiddo.

Extremely good point

I’m not going to deny that Tumblr purity culture is a thing that exists, but I feel it’s worth pointing out that a very big chunk of the apparent tendency for LGBT-friendly media to be held to impossibly higher standards than media with no LGBT representation whatsoever boils down to a calculated misdirection.

The people who are all in favour of LGBT representation in principle, but manage without fail to find a reason to object to any particular instance of LGBT representation?

Those are homophobes.

Acting like they’re 100% on your side when talking theory while simultaneously shitting all over any attempt to put that theory into practice is how they get you.

"You wanna talk roots? Let's talk about how most of 2012-2015's fan culture is not just extinct, but erased from existence."

I'm actually curious about that, I've never been in any fandom long term. What was 2012-2015 Tumblr up to, and why was it erased?

Avatar

Porn, queer theory, sex positivity, and beginners’ attempts at racial justice.

Most of it either disappeared, deleted, or died after the 2018 porn ban and the subsequent antisexual crush of SESTA/FOSTA.

Followed in rapid succession by all the US fascism.

There’s this notion that fandom is separate from the greater culture but it’s really, really not.

The same political forces that led a bunch of basically normal but newly impoverished people to join Qanon and become screeching bigots also led fandoms to rephrase ‘I don’t like this ship’ as ‘this is pedophilia.’

Nothing new, to be clear. People have been doing that for centuries.

The difference is a matter of centralization and scale. Tumblr WAS fandom, it was where fandom occurred, for about 6 years. Multifandom and crossover content in particular is just GONE. There weren’t places for that to move to as everyone dissipated into separate, semipublic, and even MORE ephemeral spaces like discord.

It’s hard for me to describe, especially unmedicated, but the elimination of huge swathes of fandom in late 2018 just.

Fandom used to be on the absolute bleeding edge of sexual politics, and now it’s this regressive, sanitized, commodified space where people think history began in 2016.

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

Charmed and bewildered that of all the insane things I’ve said on this hellsite, this is what gets put on an official staff blog. I know I’ve said it to excess, but I do love the new (old) approach that Staff is taking with user interaction while maintaining a truly new (new) approach to FUNCTIONAL development. Godspeed, you little blue wonders.

And, Happy Haiku day; enjoy your fandom rants, mothers and fuckers
